Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Tailed by a 996 when driving my beater... "Has this ever happened to you?" Yesterday while getting on the frwy to go home I was doing my usual in and out of traffic in the M3 to get my position in the car-pool lane when I noticed some early 3.4L 996 jocking to catch up to me quickly... After finding both of us in the CP lane I noticed that he was riding pretty close at times..... ????? Something I don't do in my 996 "ROCKS"..... Just wonder if there is an other breed of 996 owners out there that don't come here to post who do this? I'm sure if I was in my 996 the story would look like this... But unfortunately the news indicated rain yesterday "none came" and today too "nothing so far"..... Tomorrow should be clear and sunny.... I'll driver the Porsche tomorrow, maybe I'll bump into that guy again.. -Eli

POST 2Original post

Yes...Eli, those would be the "look what I have" 911 drivers out there. We are enthusiasts. Posers vs. enthusiasts. Chad

POST 3Original post

Before I bought a 996, I tailed a yellow C2 coupe trying to pick a fight but no bite. It'd have been fun. I had a RX7 TT then.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I sold my RX7 FD3s a while back and had fun with it but didn't do that sort of stuff.... But with 350 HP at my fingers and 15 lbs of boost I guess I really didn't have anything to prove unless you got on my ***.... Loved making those loud muffler 4-bangers look like a lawn-mower.... -Eli

POST 5Original post

I have to say that I miss my RX7...not sure if I was too young at the time to really know if it was a great car or not but I often regret selling it (it was a 1980).

POST 6Original post

I love us southern californians'.. how we refer to our $50k cars like m3s as their "beaters" ahh the socal life.. i remember growing up, thinking that when you turned 18, you automatically got a mercedes convertible as a toy, and a 16th birthday present was always a 3 series beamer.. heh.. i don't think an m3 qualifies as a beater... but hey, i suppose to each their own...

POST 7Original post

Nothing wrong with 3.4L 996 jockying but then I've been in some California traffic while on business in LA, SF, Oakland, up over the grapevine and yeah, it's probably not the place to do that sort of thing. On the other hand plenty of great places in Minnesota! Gerardo

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

To each his own "Yes" I guess..... I've started with a VW that I purchased for $100.00 as my first car and little by little year after year worked my way up the ranks "if you would".... I've owned over 35 cars now and only had to go on payments twice (civic in early 90's for one year and first BMW for around 6 months).... I hate payments and so I usually try to get around them by making HUGE payments when I can.... I guess I refer to the M3 as either my work-horse verbally or beater on the boards since everyone knows that this is the car you'll take to do the dirty work.. But I still know that it's a great car, as a matter of fact a guy pulled up next to me yesterday and said "hey nice M3, I really like the way you have it". I said thanks and drove off when the light changed..... -Eli

POST 9Original post

I hate when I drive my beater (88 CRX....35mpg) and someone in a 911 is next time me acting all badass..."Look I drive a 911"....or even worse....when some is acting badass in a Boxster cause i am in my Beater. I guess it's good though...I see it, I hate it, so I don't do it. but hey...."Look at me I drive a 911 and Cayenne!"

POST 10Original post

Not to mean anything, eli, but are you sure it had anything to do with you or your M3? I sometimes "jocky" my 996 just for the heck of it, particularly since there have been a few warm, sunny teasing weather days here. Not really speedding "excessively", but, you know, revving it up to hear the exhaust, blipping and downshifting up in the high rpms just for the sake of doing it. I don't look around whether or not there is an M3 around, and may or may not have gotten too close to the bumper of some guy or another. I more often than not do it when I'm all alone in some back road and don't really care if someone thinks I'm a bad-*** or not. Once I get the first DE of the season done, I usually don't do it anymore that year. It's just like the horse being let out of the barn in spring. Gotta admit, though. If I see another P-car jockying while I drive my winter "tank", a Volvo S80 T6, I probably would wish I had my P-car.

[QUOTE=Palting]Not to mean anything, eli, but are you sure it had anything to do with you or your M3? QUOTE] What do you mean? Is this a riddle?

POST 12Original post

Did he have a NASCAR bumper sticker that said he was drafting? AS

POST 14Original post

[QUOTE=Eli at Pelican] I guess I wasn't too clear since I didn't want to offend. Just forget I put that first paragraph in. Yup, if I see a sportscar, particularly another Porsche, hot ******* it while I'm in my beater car, I wish I had the Porsche so I could join the fun.

POST 15Original post

I agree. There's always the exception to the rule, but it's rare when I see any Porsche driver who doesn't drive courteously. I think the vast majority of Porsche owners take exceptional pride not only in their cars, but also in their driving. Moreover, since there are so few Porsches on the road, I think many of us feel an obligation to drive responsibly so as to not give rise to negative stereotypes about Porsche drivers.

POST 16Original post

The vast majority of Porsche drivers don't drive very fast at all. They are mostly driven by women, business men, or young guys cruising. Most are unaware of other Porsches (witness the death of headlight-flash acknowledgement). Most of the aggressive driving I see is on I94 out of Chicago on a Saturday night, when there are streams of large cars with "dubs", neon, jacked suspensions, Crown Royal decals, and sonic sound systems streaking thru traffic. That's not a race, it's an substance-fueled death wish, and Porsches aren't even part of the problem. I've also seen all manner of aggressive street driving in every type of car from Chevette to Corvette. Even had one Corvette literally spin behind me on a routine trip home. Porsche's have the "spoiled rich" aura, and tend to be more easily referenced. Interestingly, Ferrari guys NEVER drive fast- at least I have never seen one, with the exception of one Stradale in Malibu last year. AS

POST 17Original post

I would agree that driving recklessly is wrong, however, I do enjoyed a little spirited driving and enjoy exercising the steed a bit. I know that this will get a negative response from the crowd, but I wonder how many of you who admonish speed limits don't have radar detectors? I suspect few when driving a Porsche -- this begs the question -- who are you trying to fool? Quite frankly, I could give a rip what others think of me and my Porsche as "spoiled rich" or this aura, blah, blah, blah. With regard to any responses that may ensue about safety of others, I understand this completely as I had a brother killed long ago when walking on the side of the road by a fu*cking idiot, but this is "Never drive fast", yeah right. Why do you own one, just to track it? No way! Gerardo

POST 18Original post

Eli, I have the opposite problem. Everyone wants to race me. Jeeps, minivans, pickups ,vans. I don't know what the problem is but they all just have to go faster than I am. And I let them. I am a car guy, not just a porsche guy. And I would like to think I'm in a fraternity with all car guys. I look for "cars" when I'm out, just to give them a thumbs up. From English sports cars to muscle cars, vets and mustangs.I don't always think they look at us as car guys. I get more friendly attention in the 912. No threat I guess.

POST 19Original post

It's the japinimation kids and folks in Mustang gt's and Dodge trucks that want to rece me. The guys in the highline cars just want to admire each others toy.

POST 20Original post

That doesn't surprise me DJ. I live about an hour away from you and the people near me do the same thing. When I lived in other places it was very hard to get into a street race, in this part of Pennsylvania, it's pretty common.

POST 21Original post

I find that people on the road accelerate when I approach.... like they can stand to let a Porsche be ahead of them. It happened again last weekend twice, a kid in an M3 (I doubt it was you Eli) and a kid in a 350zx. I was in a "frisky" mood, and it felt good to blow past them. Tom

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I guess my only wish at the time was to see his reaction if I was in my Porsche..... I drove it to work today.... "but what are the chances?" -Eli

POST 23Original post

I drive my 996 every clear day around my little town. SWAG (scientific wild *** guess) is that 3 of ten acquantences says " Boy, I'd like to have a Porsche". About one in ten want to know "why didn't you get a Corvette (or BMW or SL, etc.) ? The rest don't have any interest in fancy wheels, anyway. I've decided the best policy is to ignore the street racers as I have evrything to lose and nothing to gain.

POST 24Original post

"everything to lose" I've often thought while crusing down the turnpike and everyone is going 80mph. What car do you think the state trooper will pull over. The mini van or the 90K porsche.

POST 25Original post

The Porsche. I just last weekend, in heavy traffic, with everyone doing 70 mph, was pulled out of traffic by a wonderfull CHP officer. I was not speeding, going any faster then anyone else, but i was the one he picked out to scold. I didnt get a ticket, but that seriously pissed me off!

POST 26Original post

I have a little different situation than Eli. My "beater" is my company car - a 2005 Dodge Magnum with the small V-6 option. My feeble attempt to feel good about the car when getting my doors blown off by a sports car was to put a POC sticker in the back window. But hey, it's free and it looks a hell of a lot better than the Impala or Taurus (my other two fleet options)....
