Glad to hear you used my thread and yes you do have to use a separate jack (we used a bottle jack) to push the strut up into the holes.

Since the X74 is not made for the 99 nor rec'd (but can be fit) there is NO WAY for him to pull up that kit when using your car as the model in the computer.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. I asked my dealer for a quote on the X74 suspension package as I do my due diligence on selecting a suspension for my '99 C2. I asked them to find out about the spring rates on it as well.
I was quoted $1200 plus shipping from Germany from the dealer. Is this in the ballpark for what others have paid?
Thanks,
Bill P.
That sounds like a great price. Carnewal is currently asking $2,727.93 for the full kit that includes swaybars. Which dealer quoted that price??? I may have to jump on the bandwagon at that price.
That really sounds fishy because I have not seen the price for the 'entire' kit anywhere else for under $2,000. Mine from Carnewal while it was on sale came to $2,300 with shipping and that was a good deal at the time (1 month ago).
If you can get it for basically half that amount and it is a new complete kit then ask them how many kits they have.
I thought it sounded low. Maybe the dealer was reading Euro and not USD. Stevens Creek Porsche in San Jose, Ca gave me the quote. I asked specifically for the X74, not the M030. I also asked if this is the kit with the swaybars and from Europe. He said yes. I'll need to have him fax me over a quote. The Euro conversion makes the Carnewal price pretty ugly. I can get the PSS9's for alot less than that. And I don't need the AR bars.
At least the dealer will be getting back to m with the spring rates early next week.
Bill P.
The problem is that you need to give the dealer a PART NUMBER rather than a description. Most of these parts guys are idiots. Since the X74 is not made for the 99 nor rec'd (but can be fit) there is NO WAY for him to pull up that kit when using your car as the model in the computer.
Give them this part number: 000-044-500-35
It is for the 02+ C2 Coupe.
Ask him the part number for the quote he gave you. My guess is that it is the same part number sequence I gave you above but it ended in either -07, -15, -17, or -19 which is the M030 kits (4 kits b/c you have to specify tranny (6sp/Tip) and body style (Coupe/CAB) as well). There are 8 total kits (4 for C2 and 4 for C4).
1K-$1.5K is the going rate for the M030 kit. The X73/74 kits are twice that at $2.5K-$3K depending on where you shop.
i just priced X-74 kit for my 02 C2 coupe from Sunset last week- they didn't have kit price but had to price each item individually- springs,,shocks, bars, mounts, etc- when price got well beyond $2k with many items still to be quoted i stopped & thanked them.
I called Gert Carnewal & ordered X-74 s at sale price of 1595 euro- he gave me sale price even though sale is over & its shown on his site as back to 1995- At about $2200 seemed to be best deal going since it included shipping & i'm in Hawaii.
I agree with this. If you get your quote faxed over from the dealer, make sure they include the part numbers that they are quoting. Then, post here the part numbers and someone here can verify that they are correct.
Don't forget to add shipping and the lovely import duty that FedEx gladly pays for you and then collects form you PLUS a service fee. At the end of the day, even when buying from Gert the Euro is killing the dollar and the savings aren't there as they use to be.
I just got off the phone with the dealer. I talked with a guy who has sold an X74 recently. Thanks to Dell for the p/n. Dealer says he can order for $2450 plus tax...So probably around $2700 to $2800 for the kit from my dealer. 2 to 4 week leadtime. He says he sees (3) in stock in Germany.
They still don't know what the spring rates are. Anyone have a guess?
And is there anyone out there that has used the H&R coilovers?
Thanks,
Bill P.
A big
for going with Gert, and glad to hear he gave you the sale price. I ordered mine when it was on sale. After the conversion it came out to being just over $2,300 (yep the dollar is in the crapper right now everywhere). Then I had to fill out some paperwork with FedEx for them to release the items for import duties (this delayed delivery by a couple of days). They billed me for an additional $109 (as per Dell they paid it and then billed me). So 996cats you can get it cheaper and quicker from Gert if he gives you the sale price right now.
You can always check out my write-up of the install:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/368401-x74-suspension-installed-on-my-1999-c2.html
I know this kit is more than the PSS9's, but what is nice is that it is a Porsche kit and comes completely assembled. So for those of us that do not want to mess with anything too technical, it is a great setup, just install and enjoy
I have never heard anyone say anything negative about the kit which is to be expected.
Why would you think that?
Well, considering the GT3 spring rates are 228F/543R I can't imagine they would be that high. The stock spring rates for the non GT stock C2 is 146F 203R. Knowing that, I would guess somewhere in the middle?
I'm halfway through an X74 install. Just the fronts w/ stock US rear. My car kinda looks hopped up now. I'm half tempted to leave it and put some fuzzy dice hanging off my rear view mirror. I'll have to post some pics.
I had to face it:
1) My car will never be a GT3 so forget Motons or JRZ.
2) PSS9's don't include GT3 sways so you have to figure that in to the cost + drop links. Ends up being more expensive.
3) How much lower and stiffer do you want to go than X74 anyways for a street car?
I'll be testing out the new suspension at Laguna next Friday. I've sorta grown accustomed to sloshing my way around a track, but I don't think I'll miss it too much...
Leave it that way, I am sure the rake of the car will create a better path for the air to flow.
Did you use my install thread to help you with the install ?
Hence, the very reason I decided it was a losing battle so I bought a GT3!
Been done. Actually, one of the guys here on the board did the whole setup (including the anti-sway bars). It was in the last month or two. A quick search should find it.
Thanks Dell, I actually remember seeing that thread but forgot about until you just reminded me. X74 vs. GT3..... hmm, decisions, decisions, decisions!!
Wow, Just realized that this is my 1,000th post. How should I celebrate???

SpeedDemon, indeed I did use your guide. It is amazing how simple it is. Gotta love Porsche for that. I did need a separate jack to lift the strut back into the 3 holes. I hope the rears are as simple. We'll see shortly.

Dell, sage advice. After you tally all the bits and pieces and labor to get half a GT3. My only hope is my daughter will become a child movie star whose funds I can misappropriate. She can sue me but I'll have that GT3 damnit!!!
To address this thread. the best suspension mod you can make to your 996 is to buy a GT3 (LOL!).

Glad to hear you used my thread and yes you do have to use a separate jack (we used a bottle jack) to push the strut up into the holes. Rears were very easy and again straight-forward.
Enjoy
Sorry about the "price of X74" thread, but no sense starting a new one.
Done w/ the install. I can't upload photos as I've let my subscription run out which I'll fix in a few days but here are my general comments meant to be provacative, satirical, and humorous so don't take it too seriously. More serious comments will come back after I track this thing.
1) For those of you saving up for PSS9's, don't bother. Save yourself the trouble and cost. $2100 for the shocks, $500 for the bars, $300 for the drop links, $300 for corner balancing, $200 for the skid pan. That's $3400. And what do you get? A trackable street car. They're adjustable. OK but if you knew anything about how to adjust damping and ride height, you'd be buying Motons. X74 bolts right in and that's it. You'll have years trying to over drive this setup over stock. Are you really going to tweak collar rings and turn damping screws from 8 to 10 and go "Wow, that was awesome!"? Nahhh. So do the X74, drive the **** out of it, and when you need more, your time in the 996 is over. Time for a GT3 or a dedicated track car.
2) X74's are LOW. If you drop your car more w/ PSS9's, you won't even be able to drive out your garage. 996's have a huge overhang on the nose. Not a problem w/ US or ROW MO30, but my local Target (yes, I shop there) is now impossible. Is that a bad thing?
3) X74's are not stiff. Is it stiffer than stock? Yes, but US stock is ridiculous for a car like this. You can still push down on a corner of the car and it will move, something that didn't even come close to happening on my Toyota track car when I had it. Now that car was stiff. This really doesn't feel stiff at all. I like it more in fact. Very streetable other than the clearance.
4) Some install observations other than SpeedDemons writeup.
If changing your oil is a 1 and swapping a motor is a 10, I'd rate this a 3-4. You really don't even have to be that organized since you don't have to do anything sequential. Let the nuts and bolts drop where they are and pick em up later. They're even different sizes so you can't mix them up. MacPherson strut just slid right out, the part I thought would be the hardest. It didn't take me 7 hrs like somebody else. Took me more like 10 hrs doing it by myself w/ no lift. But I get distracted easily by being thirsty or just admiring the Porsche engineering under there.
* You need an 18 mm box to remove the rear shock. Control arm in the way.
* Rear US shock is under a preload. You need to drift out the lower mount bolt and hammer the shock to get it off its perch. I don't think a spring compressor is necessary. The X74 being so much shorter goes right in. You WILL need a spring compressor to restore this back to US though. Don't need to remove rear calipers so only 1 bolt set needed for fronts (10mm Allen)
* Rear bar is a super easy. Front bar more complicated since you need to undo the belly pan and cross members. I didn't remove the whole pan or the cross members. Just loosened stuff enough to slide the bar into its slot.
* Remove the 10mm anti lock and brake hose brackets before you remove the front calipers. Loosening the front caliper bolts (10mm Allen) is a bitch. Required a breaker bar. I'd estimate 150+ ft/lbs easy to undo if lug nuts are 95 ft/lbs.
* If you're generally not going to spec torque your bolts back, than commit to doing 2 sets: the front brake caliper bolts ($13 for the front from dealer) and anything that goes into aluminum (the rear sway bar mounts).
That's enough babble for now.
I have pics of X74 front/US rear and X74 front/rear. Need to figure out an upload site. Tire sizes are 225/40/18, 265/35/18. No rubbing (except the nose on my driveway :-) )
Nice write-up, you should be able to post pics unless they are too big.
BTW...the fix for rubbing on your drive-way...move
My driveway has very little slope, just enough for water to run out of it into the court, but just barely...I love my driveway
Hi Dan,
I sent you a PM with my e-mail address. You can e-mail me the pics there and I will host them and put them up here for the thread.
Is the car so low that you can't take it to a public car wash? (I wash my own car, but a few times a year I take it in for detailing and a bottom blast).
Thanks,
Bill P.
I stuck 4 photos 2 each here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dnitake/
Don't think it needs a password.
PM me if you can't tell which one is which (NOT!!)
Yeah, no way on the public carwash I would imagine. Actually, never tried, but I would guess the guide bars would rub underneath the bumper cover.
Dan
On the rubbing, I'm probably exaggerating too much. If you go slower and at angles, most things are negotiable. Hell, the bumper cover is so scraped up already, who cares.
The car still needs an alignment, but the bit I drove it around, it really isn't much stiffer. I expected a more of a teeth rattler. It is different, but not necessarily stiffer from a buttmeter point of view. The freeway may be a different story. One thing supremely different is not nearly as much body roll.
Will be at the track on Friday. Need to treat it like a new car for a few sessions. Not as forgiving w/ stiffer suspensions. The test will be the balance of the car.
Thanks for the pics Dan! The car's ride height looks great!
Let us know how the track day goes. Are you driving to a from event? I'd like to know how you like the X74 on the freeway.
Bill P.
Funny how things work out. Was waiting at the alignment shop when yet another Porsche (TT) pulls in saying he just put in an X74 and needs an alignment. Of course that would be an X73, but who's counting. Freeway is fine. Hardly tell the diff.
Dan,
I will be instructing for CDS at Laguna Seca this Friday. Do you know what run group you are in? It would be nice to get a ride from you if possible.
Thanks,
Bill P.
Hi Bill,
Look out. I'll be in the instructor corps as well. I'll be the only guy you pass twice in one lap. Sure, be glad to hook up. I'll be in car #721. How would I spot you?
Cheers,
Dan
Hi Dan,
I'll be in our track car the "EPIQ SPEQ" Boxster. Being a red car with some yellow graphics, you shouldn't have any problems seeing us. We are car #628 and we'll be next to a white trailer towed by a blue Suburban.
Her name is "Lucille" (Red head)
See you Friday!
Bill P.
Bill,
Uhhhh, can you tell me again why exactly you want the X74!?
Might as well get a mannequin arm/finger and duct tape it to my door. :-)
Nice looking car. I think I'll find you. See you Friday.
We almost had a 962 show up. It and a 90dB sound limit was a slight issue.
Best,
Dan
