Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I read a while back the EVO was working on getting their SC kit CARB certified for California. Any news yet? TIA

POST 2Original post

I doubt it will ever happen....I have been reading about them "working on it" for the last 4 years.

POST 3Original post

You need to direct that question to Todd...the owner of EVOM....in Phoenix....my guess is that they're making enough money from the rest of the states that don't have the exemption requirement that they don't need to go thru the trouble of CARB certification in California. Too bad really....there's a large and ready market here.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

California has more Porsches per capita than any other place in the world IIRC. How much could it cost to get a CARB cert for the kit? $15-25K maybe?? I wonder if it would be possible to take a modded car to a referee station and get a one-off exemption? Any thoughts?

POST 5Original post

My experience with DMV has been that they're not very easy to deal with...expecially when it comes to a "one off" type of solution. The first thing they fret about is setting case precedent....or opening the door to a suit that complains that "you did it for Fred...now how about me". If you read the DMV regs on CARB exemptions, it's a complicated and involved process....not simply solved by plunking down $15 or 20K and filing a few papers. The onus is really on EVOMS......they're fully aware of the problem and have been aware of it for years. Todd reads this forum as do other members of his shop. None of this is news to them. Don't get me wrong...they're a good bunch of guys....just not motivated to take care of this issue. The CARB certification process is involved and expensive....but given the fact that EVOMS is a high end manufacturer of some really nice products, I find it curious and a little disconcerting that they wouldn't make a conscientious effort to take care of this issue. I for one came close to doing it and just sneaking around with it in stealth mode...but then reality set in and it just didn't make sense to have to act like a thief in the night every time you received a greetings from DMV to take your car in for it's two year SMOG check. I've resolved myself to the fact that if I want that sort of performance, I'm going to look for a twin turbo.

Very doubtful since none of the top 3 volume Porsche dealers are in CA. They do have a lot of dealers, just most don't sell a high volume. About $50-100K depending on the level of testing required and if they don't flag anything during the testing. Keep in mind this is also model specific. Probably not, but you could go through CARB testing (see #2 above). There is another option...move to another state. After all, there is one 1 state that cares and 49 that don't. Sad, but true.

Actually you are VERY wrong...there are more Porsches in Southern California then in the rest of the world COMBINED.....Thats a statement from Porsche. Yes there are alot of dealers and if they didnt sell a good amount of cars each, they would go out of business....and usually these are not rinky dink dealers, these are the top of the line places....all within 10-20 miles of another dealer.....I think between my home and work there are about 8 that are pretty close. This is why Porsche spends more money on the LA auto show and has skipped Detroit altogether now. They say just not enough sales to justify the cost of the midwest Auto show, yet LA is their biggest, they have a completely separate Hall just for Porsche.

I had read this from Porsche as well. Even if it cost EVO $50K they would still recoup their money pretty fast with the profit from kits they would sell in California.

POST 9Original post

Stop making things up! California as a whole has 24 dealers, which is less than 12% of the 202 dealers Porsche has in the US. None of the top 3 dealers in sales volume for NA are in California. The US is only 39% of the total world volume and falling. Here it is straight from Porsche AG's annual report;

It's weird that Todd from EVOM hasn't even posted about this CARB thing but still raves about the SC thing. Suckers neone? Hey the numbers are astounding but come on- CARB the thing-Comptech HAS ie NSX and ne acura. Mike

I've been lurking for about the same amount of time and been on the fence on buying this... CARB and a couple other questions have held me back.

POST 12Original post

I think it will eventually happen. If you think about it, Porsche is gonna keep the flat bottom engine for awhile and evo is a very well thought out kit for this type of engine and its characteristics. Ive been to CA several times and, yep porsches are everywhere and there is a huge market for it...
