Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Guys,
I am looking into the possibility of buying an early 99 to 01 Carrera 2 and was amazed by an autotrader ad where the seller stated that their car had been problem free but had its engine changed at 50k miles. Here's the link as long as it lasts:
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...r_id=266328515
For others reading this later, here is what they said about their 2000 Carrera 2 Coupe with 84,000 miles:
Original owner, local car purchased new and serviced regularly at Barrier. Only 30K on NEW FACTORY ENGINE (84K mi. on car) This is our 4th Porsche and by far the most trouble free and enjoyable one ever.
This added to posts in the 993 forum make me wonder about the longevity and reliability of higher mile early 996 Porsches. Are there years to avoid or mileages to be wary of? Also, I have seen a number of photos of cars for sale with what looks like earlier original flat leather seats, but others with pleated leather seats which usually don't age well. Were there 2 optional seating finishes?
Thanks for your advice, it would be great being a 996 owner here after a successful purchase. In the 993 forum they used to say that the only reliable 996 models were the turbo and the GT3. I hope to hear otherwise, and find a properly maintained Carrera 2 without too many forthcoming breakdowns.
Cheers,
Vic
.
the car is less than 10 minuted drive from my house - if you need a pair of eyes, i would be happy to do what I can for you........
My car is an early 996 and with 111k miles on it, I can tell you these cars can last a while - a LONG while.
Thanks for your comments guys, and ivangene that is one kind offer.
Looking at other ads for 996 cars it seems that quite a few had new engines installed under warranty. Does this mean that the replacement engine might be as fragile as the one it replaced, or were the bugs worked out of the first series of water cooled engines? What areas of reliability should I watch out for? Of course I'd have a PPI done by a pro but prefer narrowing it down the choices better before travelling and hiring mechanics. One poster here said that 996 engines are only good for 80k miles, isn't that a euphamism?
TIA
