Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.
0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

My fuel is always trying to decide on staying at FULL or empty - never anything in between. There are no open fuel level-related recalls on my car. I'm thinking that the sender is kaput - anybody ever done this job?
The sender is in the tank and the tank has to be opened to gain access to it.
Needless to say this is an extreme fire hazard for of course gas fumes are going to be released. In the tank the fumes are too rich to ignite but once the tank opened not only are explosive/flammable fumes released into atmosphere but the tank is aired out some and there be pockets of explosive fumes in the gas tank.
For gas tank repairs I prefer to have the work done at a qualified shop.
Sincerely,
Macster.
problems with fuel tank include fuel lines rupturing, also it is quite possible the floater arm on the pump unit will get stuck behind a fuel line inside the tank...I would not DIY...
p.s. here's what the factory manual has to say:
1. Undo battery terminals and battery holder. Lift battery out by holding strap.
2. Undo battery support cover (4 hexagon nuts, wrench size 13mm).
4. (sic) Dissengage fuel line and disconnect electrical plug connection.
3. (sic) Undo union nut with VW special tool 3217.
[This means undo that big plastic nut that holds the sender on the tank - large channel-lock pliers will work... I imagine you can also do it with a screw driver and a hammer.]
5. Extract residual fuel
6. Lift fuel tank sending unit and disconnect electrical plug connection and fuel pipes.
...another good idea, but I am one of the technology disadvantaged and do not have the Porsche diagnostic (durometric) tool. We'll see what I decide to do and I'll report on it later.
