The color scheme was changed at the last minute, so it will be a surprise for me too.
Leading evidence: 'Replace color scheme' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'only guy who is going' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check on the car progress' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The design was changed after 99 to seperate the access and battery, so he moved my battery instead.

Scott, I'm probably the only guy who is going to reverse the clear side markers back to orange too!

Since there are only 3 weeks before the Road Altanta race, I stopped by to check on the car progress today.

Suggestion
When tooling around at low RPM it stays closed, but when you get on it the valve opens and lets the exhaust run free.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Attached are some great pictures that highlight the attention to details my mechanic has.
Not shown are some great hollow turbo twists that I had powder coated black
Just a few things left; the auxilary oil pump mod, graphics, scale and balance, and a couple of small things.
I could not concentrate at work the rest of the day!
Thats a 996 C2 if I stand correct.
Mark great work thus far and I'm keeping locked on this thread to watch your progression throughout...
Anyword on dry weight yet? Also how is the GT3 RS steering wheel install, I'm guessing it's a simple plug n play.
There in NO Nitrous on the car, was that a joke?
Keep it up my good man!
Mick
Mark,
The car looks great. According to the new rules you might be able to remove the carpet. It says something about being able to remove carpet that lifts out. All the 996 carpet lifts out.
Where are you on weight?
What suspension do you have?
Are you sure you can move the battery?
It the timing transponder.
You're kidding right?
Yes, Matthews car, that's why the finish work is so good. He designed the doors, so give him a call.
The red box is the testing unit for the fire system. Its all factory stuff, and really nice looking.
Yes a 99 C2, and no problems on the wheel, it also has a quick release adapter.
Scaling it later this week, but the estimate is under 2800. Thats right where I need it.
Jim, suspension is all GT3/motons, and a special spring combo.
We already contacted PCA about the cage design and the battery and got waivers, so should be good to go. My mechanic does not like having a 12v source right over the gas tank opening. The design was changed after 99 to seperate the access and battery, so he moved my battery instead.
Very nice, is this car prepared to run in C/H class at PCA races ? Please post more pictures.
I'm starting to get bits and pieces for my 996, I love the setup with Motons.
What kind of shifter is this?
Jim, yes I have a bet with Matthew on that, but I am confident it will be one of the lightest on the track regardless of the net weight. What did you get your old car down to?
One of the really nice things about the matter cage is that it only weighed about 60 lbs before the door bars were added, so total should be well under 75.
Not many options left on the weight, except for removing the bumper shocks, or whatever they call them on a waterpumper.
Remember, those door panels are saving me at least 100 lbs per side! And don't even get me started on the helium in the tires.
Cool Car Mark!!! I'm very jealous.....
I plan to turn my own 996 into a race car in a few years (after it's done performing DD duties) so I really enjoy seeing your pics.
Mark,
In club race form my car was about 2800 without ballast. That was with two seats and carpet in the passenger area but no carpet on the drivers side, no door panels, no window on the drivers side, light carpet (felt) in back, no mufflers, no cats, no airbags, all the insulation behind the plastic removed, etc. My wheels were very light one piece forged magnesium BBS racing wheels.
I had an Optima battery which would have been a little heavier and my cage was heavier. You should be close but I wouldn't bet too much on being under 2800.
Jim
Yes. The car had no torque below 4500 rpms, but above 4500 it screamed. We actually had a design to put a moveable flap in the exhaust that would add backpressure at lower rpms and open up above 4500 but we never got it working. I figured as soon as I perfected it PCA would outlaw it anyway. It would have freaked the corner workers out. Coming out of the corner the car would have had a muffled, hissing sound then all of a sudden it would have opened up and roared. Oh well. Damn I put a lot of effort into that car.
Have a buddy that is using an aston martin variable exhaust valve that is electical and vaccuum activated. May want to look into it as he plumbed it inline himself...
You can actually buy in-line butterfly valves from Summit Racing but they take way too long to open and close. I wonder if that's what your friend used.
Nope - he used the stock aston martin (vantage maybe) part that is part of the exhaust system. When tooling around at low RPM it stays closed, but when you get on it the valve opens and lets the exhaust run free. It has both an electrical and vaccuum hookup which indicates that it may respond to both quick depression of the throttle (electrical) and increases pressure (vaccuum/mechanical) which may get around the delay given that the electrical impulse will move much faster than the mechanical one...I will give him a call and get more info.
That's cool stuff. I have no need for it anymore but it's still fun. It would have a fairly significant impact on performance if you could get it right.
Hey Jim,
I looked at exactly the same type you are referring. I was initially thinking along the lines of being able to switch from street to track. But agree, I saw none that would open really fast, kind of a dissapointment for having it open "on demand"
Thanks Roger. I am off in Orlando for Spring break this week. The graphics and the aux oil pump will be done when I get back. The color scheme was changed at the last minute, so it will be a surprise for me too. Are you coming up to watch the races next week?
I posted another thread earlier on the weight. It is now down to 2850.
Wow, that's a great weight reduction Mark. You could run H or GTB with that kind of weight and be competitive.
Can't come up for the race unfortunately...just got back from RA with NASA. It's an awesome track and I'll be back as soon as I get an opportunity. Have fun in Orlando!
Roger, that's why I asked you why you are tearing up your car to run in GTB. It is possible to build a competitive car for both now. When the classes fill out in a year or two you can have your choice and then make the permanent mods.
A sort of funny story. A few years ago I wasn't up to speed and apparently I was blaming the car a little more than was appropriate. I went to get in my car and in the driver's seat was a bag with two rubber ***** in it. Apparently my freinds weren't so sure the car was the problem. Those ***** have ridden with me ever since.
I got busted by PCA for having my battery on the floor... needs to be in the stock location. 2800# is a bit opimistic from what I can see. Maybe w/o glass. This car has a lot of weight buried in it. The solution for your door handles is the parts from the cup car. Basically a 944 handle and rocker with a piece of aluminum angle and a retaining ring. Parts are under $100.00 and use some riv-nuts to mount it to the door frame. Works great.
You should really keep your ***** in Freezer, they will rot if left in fridge, don't ask me how I know this. You can always buy a set of Nueticles and give those to your wife and keep the real ones.
Phil
Battery: Let me preface this by the fact I don't have my log book yet. It will be teched the first time Wednesday night at Road Atlanta. The 99's had the gas tank access cap under the battery. In 00 or 01, the access cap was moved forward and away from the battery for safety. My mechanic asked for a waiver to move the battery away from the access cap to provide the same level of safety. I hope all goes well when getting logged this week. If we have to move it we will, but it's only about 10 pounds anyway.
Weight: Down to 2850 now with a 1/4 tanks of gas. Still have some items to remove, so it may still be possible. I'm close enough for PCA now I think, but taking more out would be better for NASA.
*****: Thanks for the freezer advice. According to my wife, it is too late, they are already rotten.
Did Matthew get everything done? Did you make 2800lbs? Matthew restored my 944 Turbo. He's an exceptional mechanic. Very meticulous. I have guilt everytime I bring it in. I'm worried that I'm not taking good enough care of his car for him.
Car was done and ready to go on Thursday. It is awsome, updated pic in my avatar.
It is fast, and It will take the full year for me to figure it out. We ended up right at 2850 dry, with me and gas, 3102. Matt's work is awesome.
Am I the only one who wants to puke when I see this car? I would of killed to have that color combo silver/red on top of being a factory aero!!! I feel like this was a car similar to a 356 or 550 that got molested into a race car. I would of not of had the heart to morph the car into a race car, but that is just me.
But it is a kick @$$ looking rig........
Scott, I'm probably the only guy who is going to reverse the clear side markers back to orange too!
Tippy, It was half way there when I got it, that aier conditioning was great sitting on th egrid this weekend!
Roger, can't wait to race you out there.
ASsfar as results, I did set the fastest lap record for the new class, but finished 5th in class in the enduro after a couple of rookie spins. Georgia clay almost matches the color scheme perfectly.
Need a lot more time in the car, but it will be fast one day.
I did OK in the Saturday sprint. 2nd in GTC4 and 5th overall. The enduro was a little scary. The car in front of me spun going down the hill into 12 which forced me on to the wet grass for a pretty wild spin of my own. I didn't hit anything but lost a bunch of positions. I think I ended up 8th overall. Not sure where I was in class. Lots of fun though.
