Interesting you brought that up, I am planning to replace the DME, security alarm and key and lock to get the car to run out of a similar car Boxster or another 996, but forgot about the doors that use my current set of keys.

My project is missing the DME and Alarm and need to be replaced so I think I will need to get all pieces including Lock and keys so I can get everything to work so the lock and key are going to be trashed anyway.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

What a pain
I'm trying to remove the ignition keylock and switch assy. I removed the (1) nut and bolt that attaches it to the steering column and it seems loose and pulls out about 1/8" but will not come out all the way, seems almost like you need to push a pin or something to release it.
Any gurus out there.
you need to turn the ign on (to the right) then theres a small hole in top of where the lock housing goes into the coul you need a small pick to dpress the pin
The reason I am removing is because I can not turn the key? I was hoping to remove just the switch and try to turn the key but, but it's one piece. Is there a set screw of some kind maybe?
nope if you cant turb the key you will need to cut the housing aroudn the lock cylinder untill you can remove it then turn the ign on you will neevr get it out other wise
Just suggested that since Gulf V1 is talking about flamming and cutting parts. Brad, that assembly is attached to the left side of the dashboard, without un-screwing it the assembly would not be able to be pulled out. Could that be part of the problem?
I was reffering to the screw that is on the bracket that holds the assembly to the dashboard. When I replaced mine I had to reome the assembly from that bracket in order to pull it out. It can be accessed removing the left side vent where the main light switch is located. Wish I had taken pictures of the process. Yes lock cilinders are expensive.
Still no joy tried removing the switch with no luck tried removing the key barrel but it needs to be in position 1 or "ON" so can't do that, I have now given up on the FLAME Thower and am going to my COLT 45. Can I cut the area around where the PIN is so I can pull out without depressing the PIN usiing a dremel? Check the above link. The area inside the red circle is the one I suggested to turn with a screw driver. Perhaps the actual electrical switch is broken not allowing any turning, if that is the case guess tha actual electrecal switch need to be removed.
Where to drill? Pick a number I'm thinking it is through the key tumblers. Or I and can have it towed to a bad part of town and wait for a theif to pull the key lock out.
id drill it right throught the tumblers use a good sized bit
just understand you will need a new lock housing and a tumbler set
make sure to order a stipulated set so the keys will match the doors
Interesting you brought that up, I am planning to replace the DME, security alarm and key and lock to get the car to run out of a similar car Boxster or another 996, but forgot about the doors that use my current set of keys. What do you mean "stipulated".
I believe he is talking about ordering an ignition switch set up with a SPECIFIC key code. In this case, you would want to order the ignition switch with same key code as the current key. You would need to do this so the current key will work in the new ignition switch.
Yes I imagine if they came out of the same car they would match, however this does not solve the problem with the key being different the the one that fits the original doors. Would the door locks need to be changed also?
I suppose that I could have to 2 keys to operate the vehicle the original for the doors and the other for the rest. Do all these cars have keyless entrys?
Ok Finally lock assy is out and new one is in. Called a locksmith and the key turned about 1/8 to the right, but not to the 1st detent which told him it was not the tumblers and lock was ok. Next day he showed up with a cutter and cut the lock in half mind you he was not sure what he was doing either but at this point I just wanted it out! Well with the cut part off we popped off the lock assy plate and saw that it was binding in there and could not free it up. Well next step when you cut it off there is nothing to grab on to, to turn. and the pin would still not depress. Next and last resort a heavy hammer and screw driver and beat the sh**t out of it as it goes into the steering column hitting away from the column direction and it still would not come all the way out but to my surprise I could see part of the pin so we drilled there tring to get part of the pin on the lock which worked and came out with a couple more big "waaaaaks" with a hammer. . Well I paid him took about 35 - 40 min and as he left said he probably won't be doing any more Porsches LOL.
