Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'Run into was' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run into was' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Since the group buy last winter (fall?), I've been waiting for a chance to install the smartTOP module from Wilhelmy IT. I finally did it Saturday.
My suggestion for anyone who wants to install this device is that you wait for a day when you have several dry days in the forecast, rather than try to accomplish it late Saturday afternoon with a late season northeaster on the way, fifty miles from a dealer and without a garage.
The directions were excellent, with essential photographs, and the device is well-designed and well-built. The problem I ran into was with the
installer
- me.
With the top in the service position (about half open) and the module installed, I couldn't get the top to close. Or to open all the way. Or to do anything, actually. I thought I'd fried it. The smartTOP comes with a warning about trying to move the top before everything is reassembled; basically, you'll need the dealer to fix it if it jams. Because I'd jiggled it around a bit, I thought I'd killed it. There I was, with the top ajar, a storm on the way, and no shelter in sight. But all was well. I solved the problem. How?
With smartTOP installed, the button works differently. It won't move when you're parked unless you override the safety, which is easy to do if you've
RTFM
.
It's a great product, and you should get one if you have an early 996 cabriolet.
+1 ditto
I have both the smart top and remote top. The first gen remote top died and Stefan replaced it with an new gen one this Feb. No problems so far and lots of ppl like it when I open and close via the key fob.
I'm not sure what you mean by "override the safety". With the SmartTop installed, and car not moving, you simply hold the top button for the position the top is currently in (down, if top is down) for a few seconds, then a single push on the button for the direction you wish the top to move. Its great not having to hold the button until the cycle is complete.
That's the "one touch" feature of the SmartTop .... just to make sure an inadvertant push of the switch doesn't turn your top into an instant drag chute while you're doing 80 on the highway.
I have both products installed in my 2000 Cab, and think they are great. I, too, benefitted from the terrific customer service when my original SmartTop produced some unpredictable results. They immediately sent a new one; I swapped them out in a single session; then returned the original. Have had zero problems with the RemoteTop.
That's what I meant. For some reason, I thought there was another situation in which it would work
literally
one-touch. But of course there isn't, for the reason you explain.
CP
installed it a year ago....and still love the fact that I can open the top with the remote key....and ofcourse closing while driving is great as well!
You are going to love it!

So, do you mind if I ask how this works exactly? I have an '03 Cab with a 2 button remote key. Right now, I can't open or close the top with the remote itself, though I can open and close the top (but not the windows), by inserting the key in the lock and holding it in one position or the other after locking/unlocking the doors.
With the smartop installed, is it no long necessary to insert the key in the lock to open/close the top? What combination of buttons do you press on the key? And does closing the top also allows you to close the windows from outside?
Thanks,
- Nick (another Nick)
Following up on that, is the RemoteTOP easy enough to install myself w/o too much risk? Do you guys have the website of the original manufacturer/distributor so I'm sure I'm dealing with the right people? thx
The original SmartTop (allows operation of the top while moving and with the one-touch of the button .... no need to hold it depressed) mounts behind the rear seats, under the top well. Not too tough, and the directions are clear. It is connected in line with existing cables.
The RemoteTop allows early cabs to have their tops operated with the remote door locking button on the key, up or down. A great feature. It is a little more awkward to install, and (for me at least) required the removal of the driver seat bolts so the seat could lean back out of the way. That takes a Torx socket. Once the seat is dealt with, its a repeat of connecting in line with existing cables.
