Leading evidence: 'Run (at track) 245-35-18 front and 305-30-18 rear' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'car is too low' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean )' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I run 285s in the rear with no problems, and my car has been lowered.

pardon my delayed reply : I have regular, stock 10" rims ("sports classic II", bitch to clean).

I figured I better go with the factory specs considering the Kumho were .8 of an inch taller than the Falkens, so I purchased the same set but 265/35 per the specs.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ok, bought my 996 C2 Cab and it needed new tires fairly quickly. Previous owner had Falkens 285/30/18s on the rear. I got a deal from another 996 owner for a set of Kumho Ecsta 712s, and considering I was looking for ride quality for my wife, I said sure. Got them mounted, but the passenger rear rubbed like the dickens. And when we put a passenger in the car it started to really cut into the sidewall. The drivers side has never rubbed. I figured I better go with the factory specs considering the Kumho were .8 of an inch taller than the Falkens, so I purchased the same set but 265/35 per the specs. And of course, they rub too in the same wheel just not as often.
I would think that something is mechanically incorrect but why would the Falkens never have rubbed then? Need some help here this is driving me nuts.
I agree with Arenared. Do you have non-stock wheels or offsets? Or, has the car been lowered significantly? I run 285s in the rear with no problems, and my car has been lowered. Also seems odd that it would only rub on one side -- something doesn't seem right.
Are your wheels aligned? Is your suspension stock or has car been lowered? Are the rears properly inflated to 40-44 psi?
If I understand you correctly, your tire started rubbing the top of the wheel well only after changing to new tires. Prior to changing tires, the was no rub. Are you sure the tire shop didn't mess you up?
that is very strange!
i went from a stock 10" 65mm rim with 265/35 to a 10" 52mm with a 285/35 and it is very far from rubbing.
it doesn't make any sense that it could rub with the stock rims, they are so far inward compared to what i have, something has got to be non-stock.
are you sure there is no spacer in the rear? maybe a 15 or 17mm spacer that is permantly mounted to the hub? can you post pics of the hub and the wheel with the wheel off the car and then with it on the car from the rear side so we can see the offset?
All of your assumptions are correct. No, I guess that I am not sure sure that they didnt mess me up, but I just dont know in what way they could have. I took the specs that they have in their manuals, they matched Porsches, so why doesnt it fit? It only seems logical something is wrong with the car but why wouldnt the previous tire have rubbed then also?
Did you check to see if the car has been in a previous accident? Perhaps a rear quarter panel T- bone? It doesn't make sense that one side rubs & the other doesn't. Something is certainly wrong!
paulk2, not to go off topic, but are you running 295/35/18 as a replacement to the stock 265/35/18 on the original 18" X 10 rim. I wanted to to do the same but am concerned about fit. Perhaps you have a larger width rim (larger than 10")?
Thanx.
Could a worn coil spring (perhaps one that was impacted by a really bad dip or bump) at the rear with the rubbing tire cause the affectiveness of the spring to be diminished causing the rubbing?
Peter
Everyone that I have spoken to is baffled. I have taken it to a local Porsche alignment specialist and although very helpful, could not identify the problem. We are going to "open her up" next week to begin the troubleshooting. Thanks for all the help. I will let you know what we find.
I suspect your car is too low......
I run (at track) 245-35-18 Front and 305-30-18 rear.....
car is running JRZ's all the way around as such it is VERY LOW.....
Only time I rub is when we play with the suspension and take it too low....
Car runs on street tires at the same seting with 285's in the rear...no problem at all.
Maybe you ahve your car set to positive Camber....that might do it...but it I think you
have to do it on purpose to make it rub....do you have spacers..????
If its bone stock....you can't even lower it...so it has to be your alignment....
if its not bone stock then its probably your too low.
nsx4pete,
pardon my delayed reply : I have regular, stock 10" rims ("sports classic II", bitch to clean).
The tire bulges a bit, but nothing to worry, already put +5K miles on them, some of them having fun,
wears evenly on in- and out-side . Make sure you align. No spacers.
295 Yokos are great if you want tires that stick, but sliding gets tricky . Quiet, predictable tire .
No track.
Just want to show you how low the car gets on high speed turns. I have about 0.8 of an inch clearance between the fender lips and the tires staticaly, but as you can see during turns, tires are well in the fenders.
I'm running 285s factory spec in the rear. Now rubbing.
mduff,
I had smoke coming out from underneath the car. I thought this wa coiming from my exhaust. My friend was behind me and noticed that the smoke was not coming from the exhaust, but under the car itself...on the left side. We jacked the car up and there it was...the front tire "burning up." Looking further, my mechanic realized that on top of the shock tower is a "perche" (??!) and it was bent forward and that was rubbing on the tire. I have no idea whatsoever how this top piece became disfigured, but it did. I don't remember hitting anything at all including curbing, etc., but there it was. After this was corrected (new parts, of course), all seems fine.
Well, we discovered that the camber in the right rear was definitely off. We dont know why, all appears fine, no hits or shunts but it sits more 12:00-6:00 then the left does by far. Hence, the arch that the wheel traveled was hitting the top of the well arch. I am going to remove the H&Rs, put OEMs back on and re-align. That should fix the issue. Thanks for everyone's input. BTW Carrera Mike, love the pics.
