'99s are good cars, but with any 996 I recommend buying one with the full leather option....this gives it the class it (and you) deserves.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Howdy. Just joined the forum and it looks like this is the place. I am in search of a seal grey/ocean blue/silver, black interior, 996 coupe, manual tranny. I have budgeted around $40k and will buy an extended warranty. I am in Los Angeles and quite frankly don't know too much about the subtlties of buying a used porsche so I need some advice...
1. is $40k reasonable for a low mileage 996?
2. Has anyone bought one remotely, i.e. not within driving distance? If so, any pitfalls?
3. Should I avoid the '99's completely?
4. Where else to look for inventory (internet etc.)
I have more questions but will search this place more before I post again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully I will have one in a month or so!
Nick
Welcome!
$40k will buy a semi-low mileage '99 or '00 (30k-40k mi). I'm not familiar with Ocean Blue....its not listed in the '00 showroom brochure (Lapis Blue is). Grey & Silver are easy.
There are tons of pitfalls buying any Porsche, but especially out of state. I bought mine from 2000 miles away....but couldn't stand the thought of buying an expensive car sight unseen. So after it passed an independant inspection (PPI), I flew to Philadelphia, inspected it myself, and drove it home...it was a great time

2002 C2, PSM, Sport suspension, 18" Lt. Alloy Wheels, 6 speed, CD changer, 26,500 miles for $46K.
Do yourself a favor, if you can afford a 2002 or newer get it. The extra torque and difference in the power band, as well as the body and suspension, makes a difference.
For 40k I would be looking at a low milage 2000 or 2001. If you are looking for a car that is strictly a driver with no frills like mine, you will probably get it for a better price then one with all the bling.
Whatever you decide on...go for it, you'll be glad you did.

Welcome and good luck on your search.
I have purchased 2 Porsches long distance sight unseen. No real problems. However, you must know what you are looking for and what you want.
The best advice is don't purchase or search for a car on price and/or mileage. The next best advice is get to know the model of car you are looking for inside and out. Know what options are available and know and/or figure out what is important to you. Know what the potential problems are and know what to ask.
After you are comfortable with the cars and what you are looking for, start looking. Find the car and negotiate the price....then get a PPI done on the car.
There are alot of 99-00 996 for $40K and below. However, they are not all good buys, depending on what you are looking for. Some options are more rare than others and demand a premium. For example, if PSM and litronic lights are important it is highly unlikely you will find a PSM and litronic equiped car for $40k or less. (FYI, PSM was not available in 99 except on the C4).
I agree with Bet that options are sometimes an important measuring stick. Some of these cars can be downright plain...I mean how many other $80k cars are out there that come with MANUAL seats? Or no CD player? The options list on these are staggering. I decided I needed:
Full leather interior
Lumbar
Heated seats
PSM
CD changer
In addition, I wanted a "special" interior, which meant deviated stitching, a special color, or a wood package.
I almost bought one out of state - it only cost me $270.00 on Southwest to see it - it was the best $270.00 I have spent - I backed out, as the car was misrepresented and felt pretty loose while driving. Try to see it or have a reputable company do a full PPI.
