Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, I noticed today the smell of antifreeze and traces of it in the drain groove next to the cap. I wiped off the antifreeze and drove again, and sure enough there is some more antifreeze. I undid the cap, and retightened it. Drove again and still more traces of coolant. It is righty tighty lefty loosy right? I cant possibly be tightening it wrong on so many tries. Or is the thread not really well matched up together. It ties down smoothly and securely. Doesn't feel like it is cross-thread. Could I have messed up the threading by unscrewing and screwing all of 3 times!!! I replaced the cap and expansion tank less than 2 months ago. I also noticed the bleeder valve on the top of the tank is now stuck in the open position. The metal loop handle does not stay in the up position because the valve is up. I tried to push it down manually, but there is a lot of pressure/resistance. Is that normal? I dont think so. Can I change just the top bleeder valve portion or does the whole thing have to be changed again? I do see some white crud/deposit around the bleeder valve tongue! Has anyone else experienced this? Thanx you guys, I really want to just resolve this leaking issue already. Peter

POST 2Original post

If your cap part number does not end in "01" then you need a new cap. The bleeder valve normally opens when needed to relieve air in the system. Many cup cars drive with them open all the time. As far as I know it should not be a problem.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I think it does end with 01 because I recall making sure that is the one I purchased. I will of course double check. Is the part number written on it somewhere. I dont think I kept the little bag it came with that had the factory sticker and part number. Thanx, Loren! Peter

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I noticed that my coolant level was filled to the top, well past the max line while still cold. I am wondering if that is causing the bleeder valve to open so as to release pressure and is also the cause of the cap leaking! Am I on the right track? If so, should I siphon out the extra coolant and bring down to the min level when measured cold? Thanx, Peter

POST 5Original post

Part number should be on the top of the cap. Yup, too full will cause it to purge out.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Let me just say, I feel so dumb! I looked at the top and there it was! I do in fact have the part number ending with 01. O.K. so if too much will cause it to purge, will it also cause the gauge to rise. That is, will any excess coolant, just like the lack of coolant would, be a cause for temp gauge reading fluctuations? I let the engine cool, and siphoned out some, a lot actually of coolant and brought the level down to the min mark. I will check in the morning where the level is and adjust if necessary. I do hope I didnt damage the cap in anyway, or anythinge else. Slowly making progress.... Thanx, Peter
