Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

as many have pointed out, extended warranty is must-have when buying used 996. the best choice seems to be warranty offered by porsche. but in case like buying 996 from third party(private, other dealership, etc.), porsche doesn't seem to offer anything. can you guys share information about getting warranty from other companies? i am buying a old 996 and don't want to run without warranty.

POST 2Original post

You will need to buy one that still has warranty on it. Try to find one that is a CPO. Good luck

POST 3Original post

The Porsche extended warranty is simply purchased from a 3rd party company. It's not a Porsche warranty. I think it's done on a dealer by dealer basis also, not by the national company, so an extended warranty purchased from one dealer may be through an entirely different company than from another dealer. I've heard good things about www.warrantydirect.com ...

POST 4Original post

incorrect. The CPO is a Porsche offered certified warranty (NOT AFTERMARKET) that extends you 2 years and 100K totals miles (whichever comes first). I can tell you first hand that the CPO is great in that you don't have to hold your breath about items covered. You will know immediately when you go in if the item is covered and have it fixed immediately. Heard way to many horror stories about aftermarket companies and their lack of payment or the runaround to fix something they told you in the biginning is covered. DO a search and you will find many a people that had months to wait before getting items (large dollar) fixed dealing with the back and forth with these aftermarket companies. Ariound $4K and all that hassle? Not worth it. The Porsche CPO is about $1500 extra (dealer cost) on top of the price of the car. Take the $4K and invest it and call it the Porsche warranty fund (ie, you are self-insuring). I can almost say with 99% certainty that you will not use that total amount at the end of the 2 years. Obviously there are situations that would result in paying more than $4K when you self insure (ask Bob about his claimed $47K in repairs out of pocket) but those are few and far between. Remember, insurance is a gamble. Is it worth it to you if you never need to use the warranty to part with the $4K? Some would say yes, most no. Remember, these aftermarket ins companies are in business b/c they MAKE $$$$$. And if they don't they will shut down shop and keep your money. I like knowing that my CPO Porsche warranty is backed by the good faith of PCNA and we know they are making $$$ hand over fist and not going anywhere anytime soon.

POST 5Original post

CPO warranty is from Porsche, not an aftermarket warranty company. To get warranty done, you have to go to a dealer just as if it was the original 4 yr warranty. Aftermarket warranty companies vary in coverage and reputation. Most of them will deny claims that are large and refuse to cover things like tranny or engine replacement. Some even won't cover RMS despite of what the contracct says. First, read contract. Second, check their reputation. If you plan on doing any mods / track days, don't bother with warranty. Any warranty company will use that as an excuse to deny claims.

POST 6Original post

Very good advice. I got the warranty, and it cost me about $4,000. Thus far, I think I have used almost $2,000 of that. I have 20,000 miles or 18 months left on it. I don't know if I'll get my money's worth.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

talked to 2 dealer today. posche extentedwarranty can be purchased after they inpect your car(they may not want to cover something with 3 RMS replacement already). then the car became "CP" car. the coverage is 2 yr/ 100k wihcheven comes first. it covers lots of things, but not bumper to bumper. for details, visit porsche.com i almost gave up buying used 996. their asking price is high, and if the price is not high, you will find tons of problems when doing PPI.

POST 8Original post

I bought my 2000 C4 with 4,000 miles and mostof the factory warranty left. A month before the factory warrantly expired (early 2004)I went to the dealer to try to buy the Porsche extended warranty, but was told that it was only available for cars being sold as used by Porsche dealers after inspection, and was not available to private parties even if they purchased the car from a dealer. The dealer recommended "Easy Care" and I did purchase one for about $2,500 (4 yrs, 75,000 miles). Have not used it yet. I wonder if I was misled as to getting the Porsche extended warranty.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

i called 1 800 porsche. as someone already noted, it's diff. from dealer to dealer. some dealer can do it for third party sale, some can't. in your case, it's strange cause you should be able to extent your fac. before it expires.is your "easy care" accepted by all porsche dealer? or you have to use the same dealer for warranty repair? btw, how much you paid for your c4 before?

POST 10Original post

people, this isn't rocket science. CPO is dealer offered and everything else is non-Porsche aftermarket. They (the dealer) makes HUGE profits on the aftermarket warranty sales and then they aren't on the line for ANYTHING...the aftermarket company is and has to pay them cash! Any dealer worth their weight would have any used car on their lot offered as a CPO. If they will not CPO is then you need to pass b/c there is obviously something they know about the car that you don't. If it is CPO then they have faith in standing behind it since they have already spent at least $1500 on it in CPO certification to Porsche and factor that into the price of the car. That way YOU aren't negotiating the CPO post hoc. If you have to, then pay $1500 and nothing more or move on. Trust me, there are PLENTY off great low mileage 996's out there and you can get exactly what you want (or close to it). Patience and a bit of legwork will go a long way toward getting your dream car.

POST 11Original post

Hey Dell, Did you buy those chrome lugs we were talking about? When I was shopping for my CPO Cab, I was told by each of the dealers here in Atl that any used car on their lot is capable of being CPO. A car which does not pass the 100pt inspection is not offered for sale on either of these two Porsche dealer lots. However, some cars are offered for sale as non-CPO cars; apparently passing the 100-pt inspection, but not considered eligible for the CPO warranty for whatever reason (perhaps age, mileage). You can also buy a CPO car without purchasing the CPO warranty. Both dealers here quoted $1549 for the warranty and stated that all advertised and published asking prices did NOT include the price of the warranty, and that if a buyer chose to purchase the CPO warranty, the cost of such would be added after a final price is negotiated by the dealer and buyer. This is exactly how my purchase was concluded. YMMV of course.

POST 12Original post

Excellent supplement to my point Kevin! Hopefully, this will give the newbie some good info to make an informed decision. As for the chrome bolts. I haven't done it yet. I know, I know, I am procrastinating. I just need to get off my butt and do it. I guess I need to get the right "size" info first before I call them since I have the 5MM Tequipment setup on my car which came with new longer lugs and locks.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
