It has only happened twice after running the car moderately hard.

We have had many thoughts about why and the most plausable one now seems the when you run the engine very hot (like on a hot day at the track) and since the metals in the engine expand and contract at differing rates, the valve guides leak a little oil into the cylinders during cool down.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The thick exhaust lasts for about 5 seconds and then goes away back to normal.
Hey all,
I have a question regarding a smokey exhaust that is emitted from my 02 996 at startup. It has only happened twice after running the car moderately hard. The smell seems to have a trace of oil, but I am not sure if this is exactly what it is and if it is, exactly where and why it is coming. The thick exhaust lasts for about 5 seconds and then goes away back to normal.
It happened this morning and then did not recurr the rest of the day [3 more start-ups]. Any help or advice here would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot!
Hope everyone had a great weekend.
Sanjay
This is the bain of my friend's existence! I hope he reads this thread. Both of our 996's smoke when we start them after a hard run. We have had many thoughts about why and the most plausable one now seems the when you run the engine very hot (like on a hot day at the track) and since the metals in the engine expand and contract at differing rates, the valve guides leak a little oil into the cylinders during cool down. When you restart the "puffer" you see the smoke which clears up quickly and doesn't affect performance. Since it seems to happen to most 996's that are driven hard with no consequence, I wouldn't worry too much.
Well, this is "puffer one" to "puffer two" and I'd like to know from the new "puffer" Scrao if after you drive the car hard, do you take a real cool down lap or two...or do you merely come in from the track after the run? I'm trying to determine from the puffers if a real cool down lap has a positive effect on puffery. I am beginning to detect some improvement if cool downs are implemented.

When driven hard.....possible a little overfill could blow back in the breather....
giving you a little extra oil laying around at starup which clears up after a few secs.
I top mine off before going to the track just to make sure I don't run her dry in the long turns...
Not overfilled...but darn close.....
I had the same issue on a really hot day at the track, but it hasn't happened since then. I tried to take a longer "cool down" period, continuing to drive the car after the cool down lap, but that didn't seem to have any effect.
My recommendation to anyone experiencing this is that you make sure that your local dealer has this noted in your car's records. Obviously don't mention that you were at the track, but tell them that restarts after a hard drive produce......
This may be completely normal, but if it leads to an engine failure down the road, I want as much leverage on the factory as I can get!
