Turned out to be a small leak in the heater core hoses.

I've pretty much only ran the defrost for a few minutes (until I hear the bubbling) to defog the window about half way to work in the morning.

Suggestion
First I would try a pressure test of the cooling system.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After it kicks in after 20-30 seconds, no more noise.
Hey everyone. I'm a first time Porsche owner as I purchased an 03 996 about a month ago. Loving the car so far!
I have a question regarding a gurgling noise behind the dash on the passenger side. I've only heard it a couple times as it only happens when I have the defrost/heat on. As soon as I turn it off it stops almost immediately. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance. I have been lurking on this forum for a few months doing some research while looking for the right car for me. I've learned a lot from you guys. Just can't get enough of these cars!
Matt
Congrats on the purchase. Sweet ride and its the fastest color too.
I haven't come across your symptom before. You may consider looking under the Frunk and removing the panel near on the passenger side to the left of the battery cover (very easy). There is a danger of leaves clogging drains in that area and maybe some water has collected.
Sounds like there may be water in the AC drain pan. There is a black rubber tube that drains the condensation from the AC unit to the pan under the car. If you live near me, it would be solid ice by now.
My guess is the refrigerant in the AC system. When you run the defrost/heat cycle, the AC compressor kicks in and charges the lines to dehumidify the air. Mine makes same noise when the AC system hasn't run in a couple of days....gurgling from passenger side under dash. After it kicks in after 20-30 seconds, no more noise.
[QUOTE=sjg1138;10970789]Congrats on the purchase. Sweet ride and its the fastest color too.
That's exactly why I wanted that color!
Thanks for the responses. I checked the drains and everything was clear. Must be the air in the coolant lines.

Like a lot of newer cars, the AC comes on automatically most of the time. Check to see if the gurgling stops when you turn the AC off manually (ie make the snowflake go away).
My first thought is A/C as well. Not as likely to be the coolant lines.
I haven't had the A/C on since I turn it off immediately. I've pretty much only ran the defrost for a few minutes (until I hear the bubbling) to defog the window about half way to work in the morning.
I think I'm going to try to call a local indy and see if they have any experience with this situation
Well, I have been away so I haven't had a chance to figure out the bubbling noise. But now I have another question. One of the rear bumperettes is a little loose. I took a quick look and it doesn't seem like it will be a quick job to tighten it up. Do I have to take the whole rear bumper off to tighten it? Also, here is another pic.
Thanks in advance!
On an '03 I've got the painted bumperettes. I don't see an easy way to get them off. I guess I'll be taking the bumper off tomorrrow to try to get it tightened down. It doesn't look like it's too bad to get the bumper cover off.
It's pretty straightforward. The trickiest ones are up under the rear part of the wheel well. You might need a long screwdriver and/or extension for that and good lighting.
I have been in the same boat since I bought my 2000 996 C2, loving it daily. Your Car looks awesome, congratulations. Drive it daily, life's too short.
dont forget to have your drains blown out, often overlooked, maybe some water is trapped some where?dont wait to long you dont water backing up into the interior, alot of electronics on the floor level. If thats the issue....good luck with your new ride!!
As far as the bubbling sound, have not had that problem on my 996, but I have had it on other cars. Turned out to be a small leak in the heater core hoses. Not enough to loose coolant but enough to let a little air on the lines.
First I would try a pressure test of the cooling system.
