my one trick i finally stumbled upon that saved the most time on removal of that terrible rubberized original paint is i used a razor-blade holder like you would use to scrape window stickers off the inside of your windshield.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

many thanks to rennlisters who gave me the confidence to strip off the nasty old rubberized porsche paint and re-do the console, batwing, and key surround. it really cleans up the interior. i also followed someone's advice to re-dye the leather on the steering wheel, brake handle, and shifter. by the way that dye is great for covering up those scuffs on the surrounds for the seat controls. they now would require very close inspection to know they aren't new. it was a lot of work, but very rewarding.

POST 2Original post

Hey C4S with technos buddy! What size spacers do you have? Mine had spacers on the rear when I bought the car and haven't measured them yet. It seems like your rears are sticking out just a bit further than mine. Console looks great!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

well... you know what they say about spacers... seriously i just went out and measured them. looks like 11 or 12 mm. i've definitely scraped my nice technos in bank pull throughs due to that width though. have you done any interior changes?

POST 4Original post

Only thing I've done on the interior is hard wired my V1. I want to paint the center console and have tested the ashtray to see how it looks. I like the color I chose I just need to find time to pull the console and do the whole thing. I'd love to do the back of my seats because they look like crap but that is a huge job

POST 5Original post

Great paint job! I'll probably be in the minority, but I'd do a contrasting color. Maybe white instead of black? I know Sid will say red. lol.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

yeah, i really thought about the silver like on the door pulls and glove box handle. now that i know it's not that difficult, who knows... anything though was better than that junk porsche put on there.

POST 7Original post

Nice work on the console and I must say your car looks dynomite. Must be a fun drive through the hill country after a hard day at the dentists office. Is your paint Meridian Metallic?

POST 9Original post

Was there a specific thread you used to assist with the steps, or did you just wing it? Curious about the products you used, steps involved, and time spent...

POST 10Original post

Good question I am very interested in that wheel dyeing procedure.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

the adhesive primer, paint, and clear coat was from automotivetouchup.com. they can give you exact porsche colors. get that little spray attachment for the cans. it makes it much easier. the leather stuff is from leatherique.com. they have loads of instruction on their site, and also will match your interior. my one trick i finally stumbled upon that saved the most time on removal of that terrible rubberized original paint is i used a razor-blade holder like you would use to scrape window stickers off the inside of your windshield. just be slow and very careful and you can peel up a big swath of that paint. not too good on the curves, but any flat surface it works well. good luck!

POST 12Original post

Willing to give a step-by-step? I know it's easy but I'm thinking of doing same to console and stereo surround, and I'm nervous.

POST 13Original post

You can always buy a used console in poor shape, I have seen them in ebay for as low as $50. The coating needs to be removed anyway. That should buy you peace of mind.

POST 14Original post

I have been prepping for weeks to do this exact project. Tomorrow is the day. Outside of replacing the handbrake and shift ****, has anyone attempted to paint/restore them? Mine are nicked up pretty nicely and after my console is shiny and new, I have a feeling they will stick out even more.
