The broken tooth was due to a worn and crumbling chain guide.

The whole camshaft was adjusted and i can tell that the car feels different, it drives more accurate.

It's weird that the problem now occurs, because it was checked a couple weeks ago.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi rennlist members!
I'm new to this forum, but i have been 'lurking' here for a couple of months reading information about Porsche stuff and it's a great website
First of all i'm from Europe, Belgium, i hope this isn't a problem. Sorry for my English, it's not 100% perfect.
I have owned several Porsche's already.
I started with a '79 924 about 10 years ago. Great car, had a lot of fun with it. Though it isn't the fastest, but awesome feeling in the corners.
Ather the 924 i upgraded to an '77 911SC 2.7L Coup (it was an U.S model). It had a special (sort of lime) light green color. It really was one of a kind. This was my first 911 and boy ooh boy! After this beauty, which i miss, i bought an '78 911 Targa SC 3.0L which i completely restored to new condition (Did this in 2008). Painted in every detail and corners, and put a new 3.2 engine in it. Still own the car and love it so much. She is basically my 2nd wife.
Back in 2010 i bought my son a '83 944 2.5L, full original car. Great balanced car, love it!
So far my Porsche history, i hope i didnt bore you with it
:
2 months ago i bought an '98 996 C2 Coup. First of, beautiful car, you can't compare it with an air-cooled 911 especially the comfort is a huge advantage.
So i bought the car (89K miles) from a guy who goes to the same (independent) Porsche garage i go to. The man who owns this garage is also a good friend and he knew the car for about 5 years.
A couple weeks ago we did a Inspection test, the engine was taken out and did some pressior tests on the cylinders, did a clutch test, and last but not least an IMS Bearing shaft inspection.
Everything was perfect, no oil leaks, no air leaks, ...
But today (on my Birthday btw!!
) the car made a weird rattle noise coming from between the 2 rear wheels (looks like it's coming from the transmission). It's also noticeable when sitting in the car with the doors closed. The car makes this sound only when it's warmed up.
The strange thing is, that, when i press in the clutch he stops making the rattle noise. It is still the first clutch though (89K miles). But im not having problems with it, works fine.
I also noticed quite some vibration while sitting in the car (changed the engine mounts by the way).
So, thursday (26 jan) im going back to the garage with it. But i cant stop thinking about it, totally freaking out. Could it be the clutch, transmission, IMS?
It would be an huge help if someone recognizes this particular problem and could tell me about it
A full inspection was done, so i honestly dont get it.
I deeply hope i didnt bore anyone of you, due to this long text.
Anyway, greatings from a Porsche fan from Belgium
The engine was out? So during installation something isn't lined up or tightened up right.
bring it back to the mechanic!!
Also I think it is impossible to inspect the IMS bearing and say it is OK from outside the car.
It may not be leaking ,but that doesn't mean it is all right.
Forgot: the reason why the engine was out was because i had to change the oil separator. And that's why an inspection was done also.
Thanks for the reply. He will definitly check it out, it must be fixed. It's weird that the problem now occurs, because it was checked a couple weeks ago. It drove fine till now.
And yes, it's not leaking. Oil was changed, no particles where found in the oil filter,...
Note: i'm not a pro at this btw. Can a flywheel cause such a rattle noise too?
Topic with similar noise:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...tch-again.html
I seem to have the same noise, although it's not as loud and frequently. But the crackling sound is very similar.
Makes the sound in neutral, stops when pressing in the clutch.
We never found out how that similar noise was fixed.
Could be your flywheel. Could be any of the clutch parts.
Hopefully it's not the transmission.
Good Luck and please let us know what is found when it's fixed.
Guido, welcome aboard.
Sorry about your problems, I would not start the car again.....I have a feeling the transmission will need to come out for further diagnosis.....BTW beautiful cars......
What I find strange is that it only makes the sound when it is warm??
I will definitly keep you posted on this problem.
@ francars
Beautiful looking car! You seem to have the grey interior aswell?
The only noticeable difference seem to be the 2 black rubber bumpers at the rear of your car.
Haha, no not at all! This is my real name aswell, it's a typical Dutch name
Yes when the engine is on temperature he makes the sound. Drove about 20 miles yesterday (heared the noise when standing still in front of a red light), and when i came back home i stalled it in the garage and took a good listen to it. Revved the car a little, no noise. Pressing in the clutch, no noise. Only when idling and neutral = noise.
Gonna take the chance and drive it to the mechanic on thursday. Shifts fine btw.

Thanks for the replies
Welcome Guido 911, your SC is beautiful as is the 996. As mentioned, take your 996 back to the mechanic, maybe he will know since he just performed some work on your car. Hope it is something simple to fix for you. I still occasionally miss my 79'SC, glad you still own yours.
I had a car tht did that too, only when warm, only when in neutral and clutch "out" as in no foot on pedal. tinyest force on pedal and noise gone. that car had a spring that made the throw out bearing nudge against the fingers of the clutch, it was missing. spring in, quiet ever since. totally different car, but typically clutch systems are variations on the same theme. Also, something changes after recent tinkering - look where you just tinkered, it'll probably be nearby.
Sounds to me like either a throwout bearing or a flywheel. Neither are the end of the world in terms of cost.
If it was the IMS you'd be dead in the water already I think. My understanding is that when the IMS fails the rattle is the sound you hear just seconds before total failure.
Good looking car. We'll always covet the Euro bumpers.
If i would of had those black rubber bumpers, i would not take them off. When someone backs up his car and hits the middle of your rear end, those bumpers can take up the shock.
Mine is space - or graphite grey, not sure. Should check the sticker under the hood.
Hmm this might be it, i will tell this to the mechanic! Thank you!
Glad someone mentioned the IMS, so apparently this will not be causing it. I also believe it must be some bearing in either the clutch or transmission.

Thank you for the replies, appreciate it
Welcome Guido,
Nice cars. I love the food and beer in that part of Europe. You have the right priorities over there.
I think your noise is the transmission. When the clutch is in there is no rotation imparted to the trans internals that's why you don't hear any noise with the clutch in. The fluid in the trans thins out when warm and allows more movement and rattling. The stock, dual mass flywheel is supposed to mask some of this noise. Did the mechanic do something to the stock flywheel when the engine was out?
Hi Guido,
Welcome to the forum. My experience with cars and trucks in general makes me think of the throw-out bearing . Very specific sequence of events. Rattle goes away when pressure is put on the clutch pedal. Rattle present at idle with foot off the pedal. Maybe something moved when the engine came out. Best of luck.
Mark
Yes indeed, if you want to try out many different beers, you should come visit! Bring a raincoat though, cause the weather is depressing!
And yes it is the original flywheel, and nothing was done with it. Called the mechanic an hour ago and he said 9 chances out of 10 it must be some bearing in the transmission.
Thank you Mark; I'm about to leave now, to drive it to the garage. I will keep you guys posted!
Ok, i just came from the mechanic and a new problem/fault suddenly occurred when hanging the engine to the computer. It is a pure electronic defect
There was a problem with the 'solenoide' (= i have no idea what the English translation is, sorry) in the camshaft. It's a relative small electric piece. Which controls the oil-pressure in the camshaft (i believe it controlled the right bank).
Luckily the fault was quickly found, because it could tear up the whole camshaft and chains.
Each side has those selonoids and the one on the right was causing a problem. So, to be sure, i'm going to change both sides + the camshaft chains. Not cheap to change too...
Stupid electronic
Anyway, today he worked on the camshaft. If this job is done, the transmission will be checked and oil will be changed.
I will let you guys know the progress of this unfortunate circumstance.
No he didn't, but when i arrived we listened to it, but just then, at that time, the car didnt make the noise... weird. Connected it to the computer immediatly and then the selonoid error came up.
I'm sure the noise didn't come from the cameshaft, it was cleary coming from around the transmission.
But apparently the problem in the camshaft was causing the vibration i had, when idling.
I don't think it matters what problem is fixed first, or am i wrong? It's to late anyway. Next up, is definitly checking the transmission.
I will try to explain everything (note i'm not a pro at this):
So the right solenoid was broken, did a test on it and that thing gave no reaction.
There was also a tooth broken (and jumped out of its position) on the right camshaft cylinder bank (4 till 6). The broken tooth was due to a worn and crumbling chain guide.
So, because the chain guides were broke and worn, they did not gave enough force/tension. Apparently these knocked against some plastic guides. You could clearly see the wear when the mechanic showed me.
Both chains on the camshafts, chain guides, and solenoids are replaced.
The whole camshaft was adjusted and i can tell that the car feels different, it drives more accurate. No more vibration at idling, and real steady and stable.
About the transmission, nothing was done except that the oil was changed.
I have the car back for a week now and i heard no more noise...
maybe the noise was partly coming from the camshaft (due to the broken chains) and led that noise through to the transmission.
Like i said, the clutch is not stiff, shifting is smooth (only when cold its a little harder to go from 1st to 2nd, but thats it.)
I deeply hope the sound does not come back, and if so, i will replace the clutch anyway in about 9K miles.
No because that error did not came up couple weeks back when another test was done.
Thanks!
Guido...,
Can you tell me how much you paid for the timing chain and chain guide replacement.
How many hours the mechanic asked to perform the repair
Thanks
Robert
Offcourse; he worked a total of 28 hours for disassemble and assemble the engine.
This means taking off the whole exhaust system, valve covers, 2 oil pumps, and the solenoids. After this was taken off, both sides of the camshafts were disassembled from the engine. The camshaft chains were replaced on both sides.
Both Chain guides: 47$ (~ 36)
Both camshaft chaines: 79$ (~ 60)
2 Selonoids: 481$ (~ 365)
Thanks, i hope this was the last repair i have to do, the only thing we need is some sunny weather and then i can fully enjoy the car
