Was a big BMW fan in my 20s and hadn’t caught the Porsche bug, but remember shopping for parts on my very used e36 M3 and noticing more stuff available for Porsches.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I owed 987.2 base for 7 years, best car ever, all spare parts available and pretty inexpensive. Then swapped it to bmw m2 og 2017. Here is the question. Many important parts for old bimmers are very expensive because they stopped producing them many years ago. For example, much stuff for m5 e60 like vanos valves, or door seals for my e46 325ci cost enormous money, and car maintainance becomes unreasonably expensive. Here is the question. Are there many parts for 996/986 which became unreasonably expensive because of their rarity? And which don't have OEM substitutes. I always thought that porsche supports their old models much better than mass-production brands. So maybe i should sell my f87 in several years and go for 718/981 to keep it for long. Miss cayman a lot

POST 2Original post

As far as I could tell spares were quite readily available for 996s, with good aftermarket options when not available. Much better than the 8yo Jag I replaced it with. Long blocks are not available new anymore, but there are plenty of aftermarket rebuild options. Some very specific interior parts may be hard to source or expensive (rare colors or inserts, for example, or the sought-after GT3 console delete which is $1k for some plastic & carpet). Overall, for an upmarket 25yo car, the 996 is probably as good as it gets re: parts availability.

Dont know about the 718, but there are plenty of parts available for the 996.

POST 5Original post

Funny enough this is what originally got me to consider switching over from BMW to Porsche. Was a big BMW fan in my 20s and hadn’t caught the Porsche bug, but remember shopping for parts on my very used e36 M3 and noticing more stuff available for Porsches. Years later when I decided that modern cars weren’t scratching the itch and wanted to relive the early 2000s driving experience (and couldn’t live with the looks of a new manual M3/M4), decided to explore the Porsche world with that in mind. A couple years in and my experience suggests the broader availability of resources for old Porsches - genuine parts, quality aftermarket parts, official detailed part diagrams, specially independent shops, this community, even Official Porsche Centers support - are much greater than that for BWM (which is still strong in its own right). While I’m sure I’ll own another classic BMW at some point, the whole experience of owning a 20+ yo 996 has me fully converted into the Porsche camp. It’s awesome. Hope this helps.

Thanks! I'll beat the crap out of my m2 og then for several years, save some money and then get a 991.1 c2 or 981s afterwards.

I am exhausted. So which one is it? 996, 987, 981, 718, 981, M2?

POST 8Original post

Porsche continues to make parts for the 996 as it is in the Classic category or whatever they call it. They are getting more and more expensive, but you will not have any trouble getting them.
