What I did to get around that was to take off the battery tray, put a stainless steel bolt with a star washer through the bottom of the hole so the bolt/star washer was upside down, and then re-installed the battery tray.

I have done this and as others have mentioned, pull the fuse panel, there is a big red tab, take the new battery and a set of jumper cables, ground out the battery first, I used the door hinge, then take the positive lead and touch it to the red tab, trunk will automatically be released.

B) I think you have to use a battery, use the new one you are buying.

Unlike most cars that use a cable to release the latch, Porsche - in its infinite wisdom - decided to use an electrical latch.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Why would someone with a 911 use the term "frunk?" Would a tire on the back of the car be a "rire" and if on the front, a "frire?" And would the spare tire be a "spire?"
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys, I have an 01 C4 and I was taking out the battery to go and get a new one... but I closed the frunk!
I know that there is an electric access point on the fuse panel near the clutch pedal, but my questions are:
A) will the fact that there is no battery and the terminals are just hanging there make a difference?
B) do I need another battery to connect to the terminal or could I just connect a car charger?
C) also, what is the biggest battery I can install into the car once I do get the frunk open?
I replaced an Interstate MTP-H7 With a Braille 7548 AGM battery direct replacement.

C ) Group 48/49 unless you want optima GMT and you will modify battery tray to hold it.
extra work!
D) Search for posts on emergency release cable under passengers front bumper if A is the problem.
Good Luck!
A) The reason that the frunk lid won't open is that it is electrically operated. Unlike most cars that use a cable to release the latch, Porsche - in its infinite wisdom - decided to use an electrical latch. No electricity, no latch operation. I think that I have seen drawings or pix of someone in your situation with a battery sitting on the ground by the open driver's door, with battery cables being used to connect that battery to the mechanism to engage (release) the latch.
B) I don't know why the battery charger wouldn't work. It depends on the amperage generated by the charger. Maybe one of those trickle chargers doesn't have enough juice to light up the latch, but it has enough juice to slowly, very slowly trickle power to a battery. I'll bet (just a thought) that one of those larger, industrial strength, chargers would work. Not that I have ever tried it, though.
C) I have no clue.
Good luck.

C4CNRA had it right. There is a mechanical release, but for obvious reasons is not easy to get to.
Boot - opens at the back of the car.
Bonnet - opens at the front of the car.
The pull-out + terminal in the fuse panel by the driver's left foot is designed specifically to be able to "jump start" the car electrics to open the frunk if the battery is drained too far to operate it. Connect the your new battery to it with a set of jumper cables like shown in your owner's manual, and you should be able to open the frunk to install it properly. The alarm will generally go off, so be ready to disable it with your keyfob/key in the ignition.
Your only problem is if the terminals are shorted out. Do you recall if they were hanging in space, or touching each other or the chassis? If they're shorted, this won't work, and you'll blow a fuse.
I would not connect a car charger with no battery; car chargers can put out dangerously high voltages when there is no battery attached to absorb the load. Any 12V source should work, though; your old battery, new battery or another car should be fine.
This may seem like an odd question, but do you have an orbital polisher? I've found that I can vibrate the frunk ("froot" on the other side of the pond) lock open with one. This, of course, raises the question about the safety of the lock. But I figure if I get that much vibration while driving, I'll be too busy crashing to notice that the frunk has popped.
Why would someone with a 911 use the term "frunk?" Would a tire on the back of the car be a "rire" and if on the front, a "frire?" And would the spare tire be a "spire?"
I have done this and as others have mentioned, pull the fuse panel, there is a big red tab, take the new battery and a set of jumper cables, ground out the battery first, I used the door hinge, then take the positive lead and touch it to the red tab, trunk will automatically be released.
VGM - Cars have tires on all 4 corners, so there is no reason for the designations that you have suggested.
Since, for most cars, the trunk is usually in the rear, I need some way to show people where my trunk is actually located. So, for me, a frunk is just one more way of showing that my Porsche is unique. And, BTW, I do use the term in conversation.

"Frunk" is also a good way of telling the front from the rear trunk on mid-engine cars with two trunks, ala Boxster, 914, MR2 spyder, etc. It might be slang, but it's a pretty common term for a front trunk.
Only lorries, saloons, estate cars and the like have bonnets, and we don't have any of those in the US.
Worst case scenario there should be an emergency trunk release cable behind the rear bumper. But you will most likely have to remove it. (There was one on my 99' when I removed the rear bumper)
Any luck getting that thing open?
The emergency release cable on my 2002 was accessible through the passenger side wheel well, it was way up behind the aluminum bumper. You should be able to get at it by removing the fender liner, but it will be a dark dig.
While I had the bumper cap off a last time I rerouted the cable into the passenger side radiator intake duct. Should I ever be in trouble like you I will have no problem opening the lid.
Of course you need to open the luggage compartment lid to take the bumper cap off, so that's a no go at this point in time.
Froot - that's like the front boot. Funny.
Yes, thank you all, I have gotten the frunk open! and it does not matter if you have a battery connected! Thanks for the advice of NOT using a car charger... that might have saved me some repairs!
As for the battery, I bought a Diehard Advanced Gold AGM battery in Group 49 size... let's see how that works.
Thanks for the update,Not having a battery in the frunk connected throws a curve in the "will this work?"Question of the hood latch.
Now we know.
Also let us know if there were any installation prob with the Sears battery.
No the front tire would be a 'fire' and you would need a 'fire extinguisher' on board just to be on the safe side. Well you would have 2 front 'fires' one either side of the 'frunk' and inside the 'frunk' is the 'fetrol fank' in between the '2 front fires'. I think at this point you would be tucked or pucked especially if the fire extinguisher was inside the frunk next to that spare fire which I almost forgot to mention. You would be Fell Wucked..
Installed the Group 49 battery (Sears Diehard Advanced Gold AGM battery, 850 CCA)... it takes up the entire tray and the retainer attaches to the last hole (the one without the threaded pre-attached nut).
What I did to get around that was to take off the battery tray, put a stainless steel bolt with a star washer through the bottom of the hole so the bolt/star washer was upside down, and then re-installed the battery tray.
Next, I put in the battery and battery retainer and fastened it down with a stainless steel nut with a nylon insert (or lock nut).
The battery tray allows for a open ended wrench to be slid under to hold the bolt while you ratchet down the nut. You will have to remove the black panel that is next to the battery on the passenger side of the car (very simple, just one torx screw) to get your hand in there with the open ended wrench.
Perfect fit, and a 1-2-3 solution for the bolt hole!
