Seller dropped the car at the shop for me - and we did the transaction at the shop (used AAA for DMW paperwork) after PPI came back good.
Leading evidence: 'Use aaa' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean radiator, all the better' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Cooling system is certainly up to the task -- but if you can get the front bumper off and clean the radiator, all the better.

Tip would probably be fun too in my first test drive in a Porsche.

I do plan to use the 996 as a daily driver that includes driving in traffic.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I used to say the people that most want a Porsche can't afford one... and by the time they can afford one they don't want one anymore. I was wrong. I want one.
I put a deposit on a 996 C2 6-sp and started making plans for PPI. On the way home I stopped to drive a 996 C2 tip/aero for the sake of "completeness". Turns out that the tip was one wild ride and I ended up asking for my deposit back on the 6-sp!
Now the issue is how to proceed... I need to determine whether (which) gremlins lurk beneath that slick shell. The car is about 80 miles form home and I need to find someone who can do a good PPI in NorCal... east of SF around Fairfield. Any ideas? It is a private seller, what is the etiquette for getting the car to a mechanic?

if he is a Porsche guy, he will be easy to work with and will offer to meet you at a shop of your choice, or recommend a shop if you dont know one and get it done...
I would....but really... a tip? I would think about it long and hard. read some thread on how people feel and how we all try to guess what the differences are. For me it's a no brainer and maybe for you too... but if you were in a 6 speed and then hopped to a tip, you might want to be really sure thats what you want out of a "sports car"
Exciting time/times ahead for you!
Pick a reputable Porsche Mec and ask the seller to meet you there with it. Get a good PPI - if all checks out good, drive it one more time before you pull the trigger.
I suggest a 6-speed, but clearly there are differences in the cars condition and packages comparing both, so maybe there are alternate motives in picking the tip.
Tip would probably be fun too in my first test drive in a Porsche.
I get track time in other purpose-built vehicles... the 996 would be more of a "sporty" car than a "sports car" for me. Frankly, I didn't even plan to look at the tip. Once I drove it the difference was remarkable. Maybe the 6-sp was down on power... as I said the tip was a wild ride (in "D"). I
would
be interested in mods to make the "M" shifts more abrupt. The response to the thumb buttons was a bit lethargic versus expectation.
I do plan to use the 996 as a daily driver that includes driving in traffic. Is the cooling system known to be up to that task?

In a perfect world, I would have purchased a 6-speed .... but I had to think about my 996 as a back-up car that my wife might need to drive in a pinch. So got a TIP, drive in M. No problem. Great compromise.
Cooling system is certainly up to the task -- but if you can get the front bumper off and clean the radiator, all the better.
Ya know what, get a sprint booster.
It sounded kinda gimmicky but after doing some research I decides to give it a try and man oh man does it make a difference!!!
Much more responsive to throttle input and the shifts in M are very quick now!
Best $340,- mod ya can do.
BTW welcome and good luck
Cheers!
Sid.
Psycho Sid, stop showing me that avatar, it's making think impure thoughts!
Regarding the Tip - I have a Tip and all things being equal, I would prefer a 6-speed. But since I live in an area with horrible traffic, the Tip is a necessity. I do spend a fair amount of time in manual mode. I have not had any problems with the cooling system, even in stop and go traffic during the Summer. The Tip comes with a third radiator as standard equipment.
I came out of a BMW with a sport auto and it could shift faster than I can. A double clutch tranny like the PDK is insanely fast. When I decided on a 911, I started loking at 997 S's with the PDK. Then I fell in love with a particular 996 Turbo Cab with a six speed.
It's not a DD so that makes a little difference, but I can't believe how much I missed the connected feel of shifting with a clutch.
FWIW... on the 996, I think the 6 gears trumps the 5 on the Tip. But you have to live with it.
The good news... no matter which you pick... It's a Porsche.
Didn't see too many posts on recommended mechanics ... I looked at the sponsors for the golden gate porsche club region (google their web site) and if you don't see anything there, then email them for a recommendation (although I'm sure others on this site must know a good mec in north bay). I went to German Auto shop on the SF peninsula - they did an OK job, gave me piece of mind to buy, but then I found a real Porsche specialist from recommendations on these boards in mnt view - and he was 10 times better when he did my first oil change / inspection - pointed out a number of things I didn't see before that - luckily nothing major - but at least good to know about - and having a longer list of fixes needed would give you more negotiating power with the seller. I think there was a shop in Walnut Creek on PCA site - but you'd need to check. They key is that when you see the shop - there should be lots of Porsche's there - not mostly Mercedes and one or two P cars ! I think from Fairfield the closest you are going to find will be in Sacto or Walnutcreek (or maybe Napa). Seller dropped the car at the shop for me - and we did the transaction at the shop (used AAA for DMW paperwork) after PPI came back good. (Also get Carfax -that will show you some data, ask Seller to get smog, and ask for any service records he has - review for IMS/RMS seal issues / replacement - and any other major work done)
did the Tip really feel faster than the manual you drove? weird... id definitly consider the 996TT w\ the tip since its a stronger mercedes trans... but not sure how the C2\C4 tip trans ( Getrag? ) hold up
I think the 996 has enough horsepower to make the tip-equipped car plenty of fun to drive. I have had Golf GTI and Audi daily drivers with 5-sp and they were fine. I wouldn't want an automatic in those as both were underpowered compared to the 996.
The '99 6-sp I drove was very pedestrian, I think the shifters in my GTI and Audis had better feeling shifters--I know they were more confidence inspiring during spirited driving. The '00 Tip was a C2 with Aero--it looked stunning and pulled hard to the red line. I
was
surprised at how lethargic the shifts were in "M" mode, the car felt faster in "D" mode.
This is my problem with Porsches... which one do I want? The one I am driving at the moment!
+1 on the six speed, but it's ultimately up to you. Perhaps try another manual to compare?
As for the etiquette regarding the PPI, I would expect no issue just ask to have the car inspected. I've sold a car before after driving it to the buyers mechanic as well as having a car flat bedded to my mechanic prior to purchase.
It's a fair request and I would see any resistance as cause for concern.
Good luck,
Robert.
I'm going to buy a tip 996.... for my wife.
The 02 and later C2/C4S use the beefed up turbo trans. There do seem to be some issues with the pre 02 tips.
Unfortunately, I find my search... is around Tiptronic also..... but, I keep hearing about other options like paddle shifts, etc. Are their other options for a guy who's legs don't work!. Being paralyzed this seems to be the rationale choice... even though I'm a purest in sports cars and race cars??? Hum..... Buzz.
