Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Im in the market for a 996, looking to spend $30k to $35k, may be a little more if its a car that really grabs my attention. My question is are their yrs and mileage amounts that i should be aware of, for example is it better to buy a newer car with more mileage or a older car with less mileage. All and any help is appreciated. Im going to use the car for some DE's and weekend driving. Thanks Anthony

POST 3Original post

You should be able to get a great 996 in that price range. Personally, I prefer a newer car with a few more miles. The ones that sit and have very low mileage tend to have more issues than the ones that are driven. Personally, I'd buy a 2002 or newer car. For track applications, you'll probably enjoy a C2 the most.

Thanks, so is 30k or 40k a good mileage base

POST 6Original post

30k to 40k is great, or even a little low! A car in that range is just getting broken in.

POST 7Original post

Yeah... you should be able to get a turbo in that range.

POST 8Original post

The baseline I used was 03 or newer with 45k mi up to about 75k mi. Which put the price range high 20s to about mid 30s

POST 9Original post

I'd recommend a 1999 c4 Cab with 109k miles. You should be able to get one for just a hair under $30k. Black is the best color.

POST 10Original post

IMO, since you live in the tri-state area, prices are higher here than elsewhere in the country so keep that in mind when reviewing responses. I mention this because I recently finsihed my own 3 month search for a 996 and I ended up with a 2002 C4 Cab with 37k miles. I searched country wide but in the end, i was willing to pay a little more for a local car that i could see and test with my own eyes vs. relying on pictures and a PPI from an indy that i wouldn't know. For your price range, in the tri-state area, assuming you don't buy it from a dealer, you could land an '03-'05 if you stay away from AWD and Cab's. if you want AWD or a Cab, you will likely need to scale back to '02-'03. Personally, i would not consider anyhting before '02 simply becuase of all the upgrades from '01 to '02. If you need some help in your search, there is a great guy in CT that resells Porsches, almost exclusively and could give you some pretty good tri-state market insight. If interested, let me know and I'll pass along his info. Good luck in your search and enjoy it but whatever you do, don't settle. Get what you want because you don't get a second turn at life.

Thanks for the offer, the awd is not importnant to me as i have a truck for bad weather use, im just not a cab guy, if you could send along his info that would be great. Thank you!

POST 13Original post

All kind of recommendations! Well here is mine: Buy a Turbo or 4S in mint condition. Best year to mile ratio you could find.

POST 15Original post

I was actually pulling your leg a bit. "A hair under 30k" for my car would qualify as, ahem, "fully priced".

POST 16Original post

Get the newest car you can afford. As has been said you can get a really nice low mileage 996 for your budget.

POST 17Original post

With more than 1000 posts, you appear to own a P-car already, if not said car in your avatar? Low(est) mileage 996 cars at this point may have been garage queens and IMHO would be best avoided although if you're willing to do your own work and you're not using as a DD, you can probably get away with it. Buy the newest you can afford, like SSST said, period. If you don't care about AWD, you're missing the best you can get with the money you're willing to spend (4S and Turbo) and in that case get a 2004-2005 (yes there were a few) with moderately low miles, CPO and save the rest for all of the repairs you might need. Read the IMS and RMS posts prior to buying a 996, and make sure you're comfortable with the car imploding, or again, get the CPO. Good point that NYC is going to jack up the price; you still should be able to find a good car at your price.
