Clutch was replaced before I got the car, but I dont think it's that sensor

I have had really good luck using the jack that came with the car to pick up the body a couple inches so i can get a "regular jack" to sit on the rear cross member, then just jack it from the center and put jackstands unter to two "jack points" Its actually quite nice IMO - cheap and safe, with big height and easy access to the bottom.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well I noticed two little problems with the car and I want to get them sorted out. The first is probably easiest, but the parking break isnt set up right. Even pulled all the way up, when I'm in my driveway (pretty steep decline) it doesnt hold the car. I dont like leaving the weight of the car on the tranny either. Is there a DIY to fix this? Ideally one to fix it from inside the car instead of under it if both are options. Front pads were just replaced if that could have effected it.
Second, I have a weird starting problem that I cant figure out. Sometimes I hop in and the car starts right up, other times all the electronics will load, but the engine wont do anything. Usually it only takes 1-2 tries tops if this happens and it starts up, but this morning took like 15 tries. I do notice the faint sound of what might be the starter(?) for a second and then it goes silent. Not sure if the car performs any sort of check that would sound like that when it starts. Sounded to come from behind me around the rear seat area. From the posts on the ignition switch, I cant tell if thats what it is bc the symptoms seem to vary. Clutch was replaced before I got the car, but I dont think it's that sensor
From Loren, good description:
The parking brake uses two drum brakes that are on the inside of the rear brake rotors. There is a typical drum brake adjustment (for the shoes) on each rear rotor. Adjust with a large screwdriver through the hole in the rotor hub (wheel off). Rotate the adjustment until the rotor can not be turned then back off 5 clicks (rotor should turn freely).
The parking brake cable is adjusted in the center console by removing the plastic plate in the storage bin. Using two wrenches release the lock nut and then tighten the nuts to adjust the cable. A correct adjustment will NOT actuate the parking until 5th click. Anything may cause the brake shoes to drag and cause premature wear on the parking brake shoes. Don't forget to tighten the lock nut again when your adjustment is complete.
2nd one sounds like the starter switch, seems to be some what common problem. I have been told its an easy job and doesnt cost much for the switch. (~$20) should be part 4A0905849B (I think)
You may want to get a Renntech.org account set up... they take small donations and are a plethora of information
Thanks for the info. Does starter switch fit the bill? Ive heard plenty about it and assumed it could be, but wasnt sure what else may play into it as well.
And regarding the parking brake, it's saying that it shouldnt be fully engaged until 5 clicks? Seems high (doesnt it only go 5 or 6 clicks?) but not going to argue about that haha. I'll check into the nut inside the car first and see if that does it. Otherwise I'll go at the rotors. I need to pick up a jack, I only have ramps b/c any jack that would fit under my M3 was may more expensive than I planned to pay (since I dont do 95% of my own work)

others will have to imput on the key, but for $20... I would start there
Okay sounds like I'll try that. Thing is, my key isnt sticky at all like what most people seem to report with this failing. The battery shows 12v too as/after all the electrical stuff starts up, so I think that's fine. Its just strange that when it does work, it's immediate. So its not like im cranking for a long period or it's stressing to start.
Its all the way to the floor and more. A shop replaced the clutch before I got the car. I'm wondering if they would have touched that sensor. I may try to bipass it and see if it helps. Is it visible from just popping my head down by the pedals?
Hello,
On my new to me 996 I started having an occasional problem where I would step on the clutch, turn the key, and nothing. I was getting ready to diagnose the problem, when I found out the floor mat had slid too far forward and prevented the clutch from going all the way down. I slid the carpet back and the problem went away.
Good luck,
Barry
Check if your battery is holding charge...I had a similar problem, usually after a drive when I turn off my the car for about 5 to 10 mins and the car will have a weak crank before start up again. Just had my battery changed and problem solved.
