Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

well hell... I am OT... I dont have a 996 nor did I test drive one - but you all know me better than the other people (and by "know" I dont mean that in a good way LOL) so met a guy who wanted to drive my 86' - had coffee and took him for a beautiful ride...let him drive it... he loved it. Really convinced him to get one. he cant wait to buy one. Then he invited my to drive his 3000 mile brand new 997.2 PDK with sport package - how could I resist impressions: its big, heavy, sluggish, comfy and beautiful... oh you push a button and ....OK that's better, I sort of get it.... so he says "drive it like it was meant to be driven" ----- he dont know me vewwy well do he (I was polite, but did drive it) gotta admit, its a hell of a car and I dont know if his butt cheeks have ever been tighter... then he shows me the last button (wish we had that on the whole ride) OMG!! what a monster - paddle shifting at near redline was OMG amazing - I had a huge smile on my face (as did he) So we pull back into say our good-bye and sit in the car talking a while...I think I "un-convinced" him to get an old car and convinced him to go to the track --- he saw side of his car he was un aware of and the light came on. I am hoping to see him many more times and watch his growth in driving. What a fantastic car he has!! THANKS AMAR !! anytime you want to drive mine... the keys are yours! BTW my movie didnt record!

POST 2Original post

Yea, they are great cars!! I have driven my step dads 997 C4S with the powerkit and full techart package... man, what a ride! almost makes me jealous....

POST 3Original post

Nicely done! I can imagine that you scared the pants off of him.

then it never happened! I test drove one myself.... Im impressed with the PDK. Id get one... on a Boxster but never on a 911. But, yeah.... PDK is a beast on the track!

POST 5Original post

I thought you can also manual PDK shift at the shifter also? Yah the PDK is lightening fast. In the future when the engineering keeps settling the weighting, cornering and power delivery its going to be the same old game of the new ones are better. I'm sure you spanked yourself for the video foul up. That must of hurt.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yea, got a 1 second video of my face looking in the cam. Actually didn't try it on the 997 cuz the cam is new and figured I would blow it - and not "drive it" since it wasn't mine - yea, a little miffed!

POST 7Original post

OK, a few weeks back, I drove a 2010 C2S Coupe with a 6-Speed and a 2010 C4S Cab with PDK. C2S Coupe 6-speed - The clutch is light and a little easier to modulate than the clutch on my 996. The engine revs very willingly and the handling is superb. 385 HP pushes you back in the seat quite easily. AWESOME car. If you want to tempt yourselves, go test drive one. But be careful, like a beautiful sultry woman, it WILL tempt you! C4S Cab with PDK - First off, I am glad I got to drive a) a Cab, b) a C4S, and C) PDK all on one package. Now I know I don't want a cab. I never really thought I did, but had put some Cabs on my "list" of cars to consider. Cab - The biggest thing I didn't like about the Cab was the street/traffic noise that came from the rear quarter panel area. I experienced this same thing on the few occasions when I drive wife's MB CLK Cab that she had 4 years ago. When the top is down you expect more road/traffic noise, but when it is up and I am passing a car, the noise level is good until I get 3/4 past the other car. That is when I hear the noise. I have always found that a little annoying. So that alone was an "a-ha" for me. C4S - I had never driven a C4S before this test drive. I didn't think the front end felt that much heavier on the C4S than on the C2S. I'll admit I was concentrating more on the PDK (more on that next) than I was the front end feel. I know Porsche completely re-worked the 4WD on the 997.2 cars compared to the 997.1 cars, so that may be a lot of it. The car still felt relatively light at the front, which surprised me a little. PDK - in a word... AWESOME. The car had Sport Chrono and I can fully understand why the authors of all of the articles I have read about the PDK say that Sport Chrono is a MUST HAVE with the PDK transmission. I expected to like the PDK. However, after driving it, I have to say I liked it even more that I thought I would. Launch Mode - When we first got in the car, the salesman was driving. He demonstrated Launch Mode. The car jumps off the line and for about half a second, you can feel a the rear wheels struggling for grip. We got to 60+ MPH VERY quickly. Letting the car shift (a.k.a. automatic mode) - In Normal mode the PDK shifts very early to maximize fuel mileage. It shifts so low in the rev range that if you couldn't hear the engine change note, you wouldn't know that it had shifted.... very smooth. In Sport mode the shifts are higher in the rev range and a little more noticeable, but not jarring. The car is frisky and more aggressive in this mode. I did not try Sport Plus mode , because that setting is really designed for the track or very agressive driving. In Sport Plus it will not shift until you hit the red line. The interesting thing is that you can still shift manually when you are in "automatic mode." If you don't manually shift manually for a certain amount of time (I don't know how long that interval is) the car will revert back to "automatic mode" and resume shifting for you. Manual shifting - this was still fun, but not as involved as a 6-speed, because your thumb or fingers initiate the shift rather than your leg and arm executing the shift. If you set the lever on the center console to "M" you HAVE to shift, except when coming to a stop. Then the transmission will automatically downshift into 1st. The salesman said that if you are in Manual mode and don't up shift, the car will continuously bounce off the rev limiter until you do finally shift. I did not try this, but I believe the salesman. The 997.2 cars are truly awesome cars. They make my Honda feel like...... well.... a Honda! After I left the dealership in my Honda, I was entering the highway and I floored the accelerator pedal but my speed didn't change much. I literally looked down to see if I had forgotten to release the hand lever for the e-brake. Unfortunately, the e-brake was NOT engaged! My Honda is just that slow! I actually started laughing out loud when I realized how much slower the Honda is than the 997.

POST 8Original post

Nice write up Tim... stop comparing your Honda to a $110 P-car. The only thing I hate about the PDK is the shifter buttons..... they need to do F1 style paddles (stationary). How the hell do you shift when your palming the steering wheel....

POST 9Original post

I have driven Pdk 997 and it is brilliant yet personally I still prefer a 6 speed. Just feels...right to me.

POST 10Original post

Ferd, I have never driven a car that had paddles, or as Jeremy Clarkson calls them... "flippy paddles," so I can't compare them. I actually like the shift buttons. They are easy to reach with either hand and are always where you expect them to be. Easy to work and easy to get used to, IMO. I think it would take no more than a week to become very comfortable with using them. Oh, and if your fingers aren't long enough to reach the back side of the buttons....... well...... my condolences to your wife/girlfriend!

Same feeling I have. I know its best to handle shifting outside of the turns but some times that just doesn't fit and unsettling the suspension is in order.

POST 12Original post

You can shift from the lever as well, I'm sure you could even put in a long gt3 style bump stick if you were so inclined

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

+1 on thse shifters.... in the twisties I shifted just due to hand possition when I wasnt trying to shift - I imagine you would get use to it. I remember honking the horn or turning on the wipers at the track when I first started out too.... - I know some guys pull the fuses, but you really need the PDK buttons nice write up Tim, and yes Marc... none for me.. I will stick with a stick - and Hans, I dont like to manually shift an auto, the reason is twice in my life when doing so I pushed n the clutch (causing the car to skid instead of actually going faster) it's just my leg wants to jam a clutch in when my arm reaches for another gear - too risky
