The Launch Code (762) is only used for cars when Porsche "launches" a new/upgraded variant of the 911.
Leading evidence: 'Use cars' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend best cheap one and where' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Maybe they replaced the front hood and forgot to replace the sticker?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I noticed two things today, and I could use some info on them
Firstly, while driving home in terrible traffic, I get a message saying 'engine fan failure' and the red section of the engine temp gauge flashes. The temp stayed right where it should and never moved. I shut off the car, restarted it and it was gone. Any idea what I should check?
Second, if the options codes arent under the front hood, where are they? Mine doesnt have a sticker.
On the fan warning, best thing is to read the failure codes. My guess is a potential short or something, maybe on the high speed fan? But that's pure speculation.
On the option codes, you'll have to have a dealer look the options up based on the VIN, I think.
Doug - how would I read the code if it cleared? It came on after about 45 mins of bumper to bumper traffic, but the temp guage didnt move. Got home, turned car off, back on, gone.
ivangene - haha lucky me.
Does anyone ever notice an alignment problem with the hinges of the front hood? When i open and close it, the passenger hinge always stays raised about 1cm. It just feels still, like maybe its dirty, but i can push it down gently and it goes into place
The fault codes should be stored - even if the light clears, you should be able to find out what happened.
EDIT: and by the way, you'll need a OBD code reader, think you may be able to go to Autozone, a local p-car shop, or a dealer.
Regarding the hinge. I know you just bought this lovely car, but it could be that the hood was replaced? I don't want to ruin your day or anything - trust me, a little sheet metal is just a little sheet metal... if it was an '08, it might trouble me. I found out after I bought mine that it didn't have a mark on the Carfax, but it had a prior front end collision in Autocheck (Equifax's database). For me, it appears to have been just the front bumper cover. But alas - these cars aren't pristine anymore, unless you look at one (like Phil's) with very, very, low miles!
IIRC the options sticker is in 2 places I believe. Under the front hood and in the service booklet. But I'm guessing you don't have the original manuals that came with the car. No worries, any Porsche dealer can just look it up using your car's VIN. While they are at it, ask them to tell you the warranty history of the car and anything else they can dig up in the system.
Try reading the code with an OBD II scan tool. You can borrow one to read the code at any Autozone for free. Or you can pay the dealer $120 for the same thing.
BTW, seeing as the sticker is missing, make sure the car came with the rest of the bit and pieces i.e. tool kit, spare tire, jack, hard top removal tool, head light removal tool.
Was your car in an accident? Maybe they replaced the front hood and forgot to replace the sticker? That might also explain the hinge being a little off.
I do have the original books. Ill look in there for the options
I actually want to buy an OBD2 reader. Can anyone recommend the best cheap one and where to get it?
I have all the rest I think. I know the tires in there, are the other tools right in that compartment too? Carfax was clean, but it could have been in something minor. Either way, is there any way to get that hinge lining up better?
okay I have the whole toolkit and all the books in the leather case.
Option codes:
L6B4 AA (top line, whats this - its bigger print)
C02 228 288 411 424
437 438 446 490 537
601 696 762
Anyone know those off the top of their head?
Sure, I can recall all of the option codes, right off the top of my head... Not.
Go to Renntech, or they're listed pretty well in Adrian Streather's "bible." I can look them up tomorrow if you need them.

So skoot, you have had the car about a week... I know its nerve racking, but how are you holding up? Just be aware you might start to get a little "cold feet" as you learn more, but that is normal and what you are going thru is too. Welcome and keep posting your questions and concerns
(we love to laugh at them
)
J/K man, you are doing fine
I have
this
reader. It's small and displays a fair bit of info for the price. Unlike the scan tools at AutoZone, it doesn't display a lot of details when it reads the codes, but if you have a sheet with the code descriptions it's not a big deal.
Speaking of an error code listng and corresponding descriptions, does such a thing exist for these cars? I had a very nice/descriptive list from PSI3 when I had my Subaru.
Awesome thanks! Do you know what the launch code is/means?
Loving the car! Just nervous obviously as I learn the minor quirks here and there. The fact that I jumped in and drove 2k miles tho really is reassuring. My mindset is if something major was wrong, it would have probably broken then (just the way my luck works id get stuck in the middle of arkansas or something). Still learning the little things. Havent successfully programmed a radio station yet. I just saw the book said to hold the button, which I tried, but ill have to try again. Need to figure out ideal set position too.
Plus, it's fun asking all the newb questions since I'm sure a year down the road (or less) ill be answering them for someone else
Interesting, never seen that before. I'm use the the one that autozone uses, or a Peake reader. Are those only for BMWs tho? They connected onto a plug in the engine and gave different codes, but came with a book to decifer them. It's a shame this car doesnt have an OBD code trick. My old M3 didnt either, but the 95 could, and my gf's neon could which helped me find a bad sensor earlier this week
But back to the error question - is that computer message I got the same idea as a CEL? Is there a fan I could easily check that might be stuck or acting up?
What do you mean by OBD "code trick?"
As for the radio presets, hold the button down longer. When I first tried to load a preset I got frustrated when I would press and hold the button and it would go to the station previously loaded in that loaction. Hold the button through this process and it will load the station you want - it takes a few seconds longer than most radios.
ok thats what i figured
the 95 m3s you could press the gas pedal 3 times (i think) when the cars turned to the on position and it will give you the P#### codes, I believe the odometer gives them. My gf's neon, you turn the car to on and back off 3 times, leaving it the 3rd. odometer reads out P#### codes.
Handy not needing a scanner. very handy.
Any code reader which is not OBD II (which became mandatory in 1996) compliant is not standardized and will probably not work across manufacturers even if it said "OBD".
The Peake tool you used for your older BMWs is a case in point as it has a specialized connector and uses a protocol that is specific to BMW.
Since OBD II all the code reading tricks have disappeared and you now need to have a standardized code reader.

Skoot,
Ed is correct. Not every Model Year has the Launch Code designation. The Launch Code (762) is only used for cars when Porsche "launches" a new/upgraded variant of the 911. Porsche configures the early cars and sends these cars to the dealers early in a model year. Presumably, Porsche configures the cars similarly so they can produce them quickly and get get them to the dealers sooner.
Since the 1999 MY was the initial "launch" of the water cooled 911, some of the early cars which had the Launch Code. The 2002 MY cars were upgraded (face lift) cars and some had have the Launch Code, as your car does.
The 997 was "launched" for 2005 MY so some had this code. In 2009, the 997 got an upgrade (and are referred to 997.2 cars) and the early cars had the Launch Code designation.
