I got most of my 944 work done at SM Motorsport, with good results, but ran into lots of problems with them when I brought the M3 in.
Leading evidence: 'Run into lots of problems' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check place out' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I've used TKX for my old 944 and my current M3 a couple times.

When I end up getting the 996 I'll have to go by and check the place out.

personally I dont think its much, I think I had an oil change, tie rod end, alignment, and track inspection that ended up about the same cost....If you read all the things you are getting fixed, its a real bargin
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys,
So we had amazing weather in NYC this weekend, and I decided to do some racing... the next morning I saw 2 spots on my garage floor. Took her to the indy this morning and here's the damage-
Water Pump Replace - 3.4 hours = $357
Water Pump Part - = $313.04
Fluid Filter - A/T Replace - 1.7 hour = $178.50
part = $75
Transmission oil cooler - 2 hour = $210
Trans cooler seals 4x $4. = $18
Trans Fluid 6x $15 = $90
Coolant 3x $31 =$93
Belt =$43
Total parts & Labor $1377
TAX $ 118
Grand Total $ 1496
So is that reasonable? Thoughts?
thank you-
B
did you get dirty? Does your car run great? Is it leaking? If it leaks do you have to get dirty again?
then it's reasonable
A good deal is a state of mind, relax, its done....drive the car, take it back if you have to... most likely wont have to though
I thought the job was done...
change "did you get dirty" to "Will you have to get dirty"
change "is it leaking" to "are they going to get it to stop leaking"
and the last one to "do they stand behind thier work so if there is any issues, you can get them resolved quickly"
hope that makes more sense
PS I never get accused of making sense

Hopefully, he checked the much more common leaking expansion tank, and is not just assuming it's the WP. If you haven't already had the coolant expansion tank replaced, then make sure to "GIT'R DONE..." with this service, or all that coolant and much of the labor will be a waste. ANY decent Porsche mechanic can tell you if it's the original in there or the newer replacement. They ALL fail, it's not a matter of if, but when!!
I interpret this to mean that something is wrong with the car, rather than routine maintenance. And $1400 for repairs is not uncommon, but I would not consider it routine.
You do pay a Porsche premium for repairs, so (for equal repairs) 1400 Porsche dollars is probably around 140 Honda civic dollars .

Your trans fluid change/replace sounds about right but why did you have to change the trans cooler?
The water pump on a Tiptronic is hard to do because there is a line that runs below it and makes the work almost painful. I had to use like a 4-6 ft long tamping bar to pry against the motor and motor plate so the labor sounds ok too.
I could of done the total job for about $400 - $600 (my labor) so it sounds like about $1k in labor. Probably just about right for an indy.
My money certainly does not grow on trees. I do all the maintenance on the car myself. But any repairs done by my mechanic easily run north of a $1000 dollars (e.g. steering angle sensor, control arms, etc). What costs $300 for my Nissan or Toyota runs $1200 for my 996. Damn, some people even pay $450 for a key.
I went with (Taso) TKX Performance, out in Long Island.
The 996 is an 2002 C2 TIP with 57k
the first leak is around mid car/ Trans Oil from the pan
the second leak is directly under the engine (mid) and is coolant
$105/hr labor rate? That's not bad. In comparison, an indy BMW shop around here is $110/hr and the closest BMW dealer to me is $138/hr.
What I would research is whether the time estimates for each job is accurate and I would research the prices of the parts. My local BMW dealer mentioned above charges 2x what Tischer BMW in Maryland, a well-known online source of cheap BMW OEM parts, would charge for parts.

I've used TKX for my old 944 and my current M3 a couple times. For LI big name indys, they're pretty good. Their work has always been done right, which I cannot say about all mechanics I've delt with. My turnoff was their price. I felt they nickle and dime for everything, and mixed with sometimes having to wait like two weeks for an appointment, it wasn't worth my effort to drive out there. Quality-wise tho, again, I really cannot say I've had any problems with them.
I got most of my 944 work done at SM Motorsport, with good results, but ran into lots of problems with them when I brought the M3 in. I haven't gone back since. They charged significantly less too.
Who do you use in CT? I'm yet to find a decent mechanic in this state. I go back to queens now for all my work.
It's a BMW shop called Project MSpec. Two buddies opened it up a year or two ago. It's grown a lot since then. Not sure how much work they do on other brands, but their work is good, their price is lower than anyone else I've found, and they're always very honest and helpful. The owners are Adam and Eddie. Tell them Scott from CT says hi if you go by.
Gelnn's Garage is off ext 16 on I 95 in Norwalk, CT. He is in the Shell Gas station across the street from the East Norwalk Strain Station.
Glenn worked together with Kip Harris, now at Farnbacher-Loles, when they were mechanics at the Porsche racing team in Norwalk.
One of the best finds with a German indy mechanic and very knowledgeable with 996s and older.
Have Glenn quote on your M3 work. He fixes a lot of A4 1.8T that kids mod themselves and run into problems. Tell Glenn or Doug that Chao sent you and they will take care of you. [phone removed]. He's worth a phone call at least.
Chao - Thanks for the recommendation. I gave a call just now and got Doug. Sounds like a nice guy. I'm going to bring the car in on Thursday to get some work done. I think my RSMs broke (common bmw problem) on top of the existing minor problems, so finding somewhere more local is perfect.
Exactly! I normally commute by train to work anyway, so it's perfect. It'll be nice to get a new set of eyes on the car as well. Hopefully they can figure out some of the other smaller problems that have been bothering me that the other mechanic never seemed to notice - and hopefully none of it is big
Glenn's the guy for that kind of stuff. He been around the track long enough to have seen most problems. Ask Glenn to give the car a once over for other issues.
There are a few members who take their car to him for work now. Half of my office and their friends go to him for work and I have not heard anything but positive comments so far.
Dropped the car off this morning. Doug (older Doug) was there. Going to check out the suspension and my coolant loss problem (im really hoping its not a crack in the head, but I think it will be
) and give me a call with what he finds. Do they usually quote labor at book hours or by how long it actually takes them?
Glenn usually does not charge for diagnosis if you follow up with the work. They will give you a deal with cash transaction. They are honest that they don't quote labor by book hours. It is helpful if you do know how many book hours it takes for the project though. They are open to negotiation always. Just a nice bunch of folks and easy to work with..
