Kinda ran low on oil and pretty much killed the engine.
Leading evidence: 'Run low' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace original' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

lots of questionable used 3.4 motors on EBAY asking ridiculous pricing...

I mean I guess there's both a supply and demand side to the "good used engine" equation.

I know people who have been looking for good used engines for months.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

No fiscal motivation behind this post I am sure. I was going to refer the OP to your rebuilding service if need be but seems as though you are already on top of it.
Just stating the facts... The values of the cars are forcing more and more people to look for good used engines than buying an engine from Porsche or one of our updated units. In my original post I stated nothing more than this and did not refer to anything regarding my program. I know people who have been looking for good used engines for months.
The new used engine is to replace the original. Kinda ran low on oil and pretty much killed the engine. Less $$$$$$$ to replace than rebuild.
Thank you for your responses.
There are currently three 3.4 engines on Ebay right now. They range in price from $3,950. for a 100k engine, to $6,200 for a 50k engine, to $7,999 for one that's rebuilt.

In spite of their common failures (???), they don't seem to be hard to find, or bringing a premium. I have been watching the prices (on ebay) for about the past 6 years, since I bought my first project 996. They appear readily available, compared to a few years ago, when it was rare to find one used.
Hey Jake, I know your good motor work from the VW world.
(But somehow you should provide some kind of full disclosure.)
You might be able to answer maybe a dumb question -- where does the supply of "good used engines" come from?
i.e., crashed cars, or cars that had only minor motor problems?
It actually seems to me that a lot of 996 owners are coming to the conclusion it doesn't make sense to sell a great car at current deflated prices.....?
I mean I guess there's both a supply and demand side to the "good used engine" equation.
The "premium" for a 3.4 engine may jsut be from Porsche. Through Sunset and Suncoast a 3.4 Reman if $11,010 whereas a 3.6 is only $8,500, unbelievable.
you don't know what your getting on e-bay.... and a re-built motor is a big question mark if you don't know the guys who built it!! it could run for 6 months and then KABOOM...
the engine with 100K is probably being sold cause they know something is wrong with it.... so they are looking for some sucker to pay $3950 to cover the cost of their new engine .... lol... buyer beware...
i've got a 21K mile 3.4 from a '99 C2. still in the car so it can be run (which it does well). the car was hit in the front and im parting it out. motor, and everything else avail with the exception of seats and steering wheel.
premium? probably not Jake.... lots of questionable used 3.4 motors on EBAY asking ridiculous pricing... and they have tons of mileage... I don't think porsche owners are that naive given all the documented failings of the 3.4 over the last 5 years or so...
I was stating that documented engines that are known good are bringing the premium. The engines that find their way onto ebay are generally questionable and have little prior history.
Engines that do come from vehicles that have good maintenance records do bring a premium, atleast what I consider for a used engine.
Agree with Jake on this. I think you'd have to be very naive to buy an engine from a stranger with only a promise that it has low mileage and/or ran well before it was pulled. On the other hand, if you are that naive, like Dharn55 I have an engine that ran great...just before it went all schizophrenic with its lubricant and coolant.
Not true, the motors are the same, you just swap the engine harness and the cable operated TB for the egas one or the opposite depending on which way you are going.
-Todd
well... that's the only motor you would want... in the car and with some service records... why would you ever touch a motor out of the car if you didn't know the guy... and having said that its still a used motor out of warranty... there is some risk but probably less than some motor sitting on the floor somewhere...
That statement would be true for any motor from any car. A proven working motor with a substantial history of documentation is always going to bring a premium over some random "ebay" type find.
No, there is no issue, if you buy a 3.4 from an egas car and put it in an early non egas car, you simply use the old wiring harness and the old ecu and TB. There is no electronics issue like putting a later variocam plus (ie 3.6 ) engine into an earlier car.
-Todd
Hey Todd,
I don't profess to be a 996 expert, but according to the PET there are 2 different ecus for US manual 3.4 cars. 996 618 601 04 (through 99) and 996 618 605 00 (through 01). The latter ecu number is for model M 620 which is e-gas.
Cheers,
Joe
Yes, the egas cars use a 7.2 DME and the early non-egas cars use the 5.2.2. My point is the engines are the same, so you can use an egas motor in a non egas car or a nonegas motor in an egas car ( for the 3.4L engines) as long as you swap the throttle body and wiring harness. This is all I am going to say about this. I am well versed in this, so you can either believe me or not. I have done it have you?
-Todd
I believe you are mixing up the 3.4 vs 3.6 swap... both can be egas, but the electronics are way diff. 3.4 engines egas or not are a direct swap (except throttle bodies).
Guys I think we are saying the same thing. My point was that the electronics for e-gas vs non-egas are different. I don't disagree that the basic 3.4 "longblocks" are similar. However, converting a non-e-gas car to e-gas requires the later wiring harness and ecu. That's all.
