I took the Pcar out this weekend because the weather was clear and needed to charge the battery and run the fluids.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The engine is still intact -
the RMS (the second one) is still dry -
and although the value is dropping -
... this car never stops impressing me.
Today, I was driving on a wide, freshly paved 3 lane hwy, and was minding my own business about 5 over the limit, tops. Then what appeared to be a gaggle of nastily modded (v6, I think) 90s Mustangs started tailing me, driving up to the side of me, their neon and chromed out grills getting way too close for comfort...
A quick stare down a long stretch of hwy revealed no cars, so in 6th gear I started accelerating to pull away from them. They persisted. I put in a little bit more pedal, then around 4K the motor started to just feel really strong - I was looking more at the road than at my speed, but I was surprised how briskly the car was accelerating... glanced down at the speedo and was like "holy ****". Well, more like "HOLY ****!!".
. I immediately got back to the speed limit - and of course the Mustangs were just tiny little specs. These are amazing machines!
This post has no real point - I was just feeling awesome behind the wheel today, and wanted to drop a thread that did not involve residuals, leaking oil, or anything busted (thank you V1).
Thanks Malakas. Nice to be able to open her up once in awhile. That's what it's for right? Good way to remind us what these 'depreciating' Porsches are still so good at doing.
Im sorry thats what you took from my post -
But to be accurate: once I was clear of other vehicles who IMO were driving in an unsafe manner, I noticed my indicated speed, and then it was me (then it was I, ??, unsure of the correct grammer here) who decided not to drive at excessive speeds.
Barn996: right on - happy motoring!
that is the "dangerous" part of driving our cars. past a certain point, the car just hunkers down and gets serious. i think the biggest "problem" is that the car is so stable at speed you just don't get a sense of how fast you're going. of course that's also the appeal. man i love driving my p-car.
Thats just it -- I figured, in
top gear
, with maybe 50-60% throttle, how fast would the car
really accelerate
... At the wheel it felt really no different than cruising at 70... but when I felt another surge at 4K (!!) I looked down, and I was flying! So I immediately took my foot off and slowed it WAY down.
I mean, Im in no way trying to condone excessively fast driving - my point was more that this car just thrills - to go that fast, so effortlessly... amazing.
I pine away all the time thinking about how 9 months later the same money I spent could now buy a nice Turbo, or (with a little more ) a GT3... but the stock 3.6 has plenty of power. Now when I add that plenum and exhaust...
Exactly. The drive that Arrwin organized in NY state last summer was an eye opener for me and I realized that my car had way more capability than I did as a driver. Those guys were flying and took me up to my comfort limit - even though the car was still begging for more. It was really apparent that the car wasn't even breaking a sweat even though I was going as far as I willing to go.
There are road tracks all around the country, just begging for y'all to bring your cars to an HDPE! Take it to your local autocross, too, entry's only usually $25 and you can really feel the gs and appreciate the finer handling qualities as well
I had a similar experience to this when I first got my Porsche. I was rolling along at a reasonable speed (75 in a 65 zone if I recall) and was passed by some guy in an import doing at least 90. It just so happens there was very little traffic, the road was a gentle rise cresting a quarter mile ahead with no LOS to any possible radar traps, cop-bait was a nice pad in front of me... so I gunned it, just for a moment, and the permagrin widened. It couldn't have been more than 2 seconds, but next thing I knew, I was going 100 and I, too, said HOLY **** and immediately backed off. It's just amazing how these cars can still accelerate at 100mph just as easily as it can at 30mph. It's almost dangerous from a ticket standpoint. The acceleration curves plainly bear this out
Here in Toronto, Canada it was a lovely cold sunny day. Took my 2004 C4S out for a spin after washing it and keeping it under cover for most of the winter. Took it up the Don Valley Parkway and saw a 2003 BMW M3 pushing it. As you say, once you get going in the C4S its hard for others to keep up. That torque at around 90 km/h is just so breathtaking. And the C4S just looks so good. One of the best looking 911s in my view. I'll just have to keep it and get myself another, that way my wife and I won't be without one.
Had it out last weekend. Drove by the ski area that I'm a ski patroller at. It was Sunday around noon. The road in front is a 55 zone. There were two cars in front of me and I put it into third to pass as they were still doing 45 (it was a 45 zone about 1/4 mile back). Two kids who where helping park cars were at the end of an aisle which was by the road. They saw me and both were pumping their fists into the air and shouting as I drove by. I loved it!!! I was probably only going 60, but to them, the sight of an SY C4S passing two cars was the best and it made me feel great. I absolutely love my car.
I just came back from going out to dinner with my wife (to celebrate our anniversary). I was very well behaved, although I did take one entrance ramp at speed. I got my wife to stop speaking mid-sentence and hold onto the door handle.
But, like the OP, I was thinking about what great cars these are.
Or in my Honda. <grin> Hey, I just had to!
I do the track thing but sometimes find it tough not to push my street car. One of the things I wonder about when I finally get my 996 is how to keep the speeds down even if it's "just" on / off the highway ramps.
dresler, Damn you've had a bunch of cars. LOL Even a couple of Preludes.
Dave Gran
Now if only you could activate that option on command.
Gotta be careful - around here the police love to wait on the ramps... the number of times I've been stopped mid-acceleration by a cop sitting there as I round the corner on the cloverleaf.... thankfully I'm usually only around 60mph by the time I see them, rather than the 75 that I would be doing by the time I merged onto the road.
+1 on the amazing performance of these cars, Malakas. Since my first DE last November, I've realized how amazing the car performs in 3rd and 4th gear on winding country roads. The DE taught me to not be afraid of keeping the revs at 3500-4000 rpms (or higher). It just takes it and asks for more. The amount of control and power is un-matched IMHO. Can't imagine what a GT3 or turbo would feel like.
For now, I have more power and handling than I know what to do with. Although, I'm attending my next DE in May with First Settlers PCA. Challenging turns and 120+ in my car at Va Intl. Raceway is the most incredible experience I've ever had in my Porsche. If you haven't done it yet, you have to try it. The instructors were right when they described it as a "legal addiction."

Maturity? Seriously though, I push the 996 less on the street than I pushed my first 944 (13 years ago!)... Perhaps I'm a little older and wiser than I once was.
And, a track fix does help. I go to the track every chance I get (now it's only 10 or 12 times a year - but I used to do 30+ days/year!)
you know, those Preludes were the closest driving cars to the 911 I've ever felt. Serious difference in power of course, but they were amazing for their time. They had perfectly neutral handling. I took many ramps sideways in those, they never let me down...
I needed a little "me" time yesterday so I headed out alone in the P-car. As I worked my way out to some farms and country areas I found a couple spots with twisty roads and was watching my speeds. Serveral that said 25, I have to admit the speedo was over that by almost double... but I didnt push it, just an occational burst on the ones that had clearly visable curves with no human or animals and only roads and grass....
at the end of one road, there was a long (1/2 mile?) straight thru a pasture... no cars and I could see the end was a T... fenced, no animals, nothing but a straight road and some grass... I opened up the car just for a second thru 2nd 3rd 4th with rpm's over 6k and into 5th
Woohoo... baby... There's your smile!!!
Slowed down and just putted home in slow mo....SMILING...
Yup, I love hitting the twisties way more than hitting high speeds on a straight... there's just more of a thrill when you hit curves at 50-60 than you get from gunning it on an open straight... you can do the dragstrip for the latter, but there's no substitute for the former.
I took the Pcar out this weekend because the weather was clear and needed to charge the battery and run the fluids. There is no subsitute as I can get around any car and do anything I want. Its got it all.
The first time my wife was willing to try driving the 996 (she's not great with a manual and is worried about hurting my baby) it was on the highway. Real nice day, no traffic, she found out about the 6th gear pull pretty quickly.
Stupid because she had never driven it before, sure, but even as a passenger the car felt butter smooth approaching 110. If I looked down I would have had no idea that we were going any faster than normal. Of course later that day I see her looking around the internet for another 996, might just have to wait for that.
Myself, there's a few really twisty roads around here with lots of ups and downs and no crossing traffic that I like to play on once or twice a week. And a few times I've needed to give the car a quick rinse at a self-serve car wash but I don't carry towels in the car to dry it off...
Turns out that an open highway and a little bit of throttle makes for a handy blow-dryer.

Thats awesome man.
To all the posters in this thread -- thanks for sharing some of the pure pleasure that is being an owner. Its been a refreshing read!
No doubt - I need to autocross more. You would think the 4S would be sub-optimal on the parking lot, but its a hoot! Still waiting for my schedule to yield for my first DE.
Van: thats some serious mileage man. First engine? (lol)
Don't worry Ed - he was replacing RMSs
every
year, and got the motor changed right before the warranty expired. So, assuming you haven't gone through 8 RMSs, you're going to be OK.
