Loosened the oil filler tube to get a straight shot at the tensioner assembly and used a 5mm hex to loosened the tensioner arm a little at a time.

The arm is too close to the block to install a new bolt and my guess is I need to remove the arm from the spring to replace the bolt.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

While replacing the rollers on the serpentine belt I managed to break the bolt holding the roller to the tensioner arm. The arm is too close to the block to install a new bolt and my guess is I need to remove the arm from the spring to replace the bolt. Has anyone overcome this problem? If so how, I am working on a 1999 c2 6 speed. Thanks in advance

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

got it, removed the throttle body and the first plenum behind it to gain access. Loosened the oil filler tube to get a straight shot at the tensioner assembly and used a 5mm hex to loosened the tensioner arm a little at a time. I used a lever to ease the tensioner arm away from the block until I could get the new bolt in place. This breakage was caused because I could not mount the belt after replacing the rollers. When I tried to mount the belt the nut on the tensioner would spin not allowing me to get the belt on. I found out later, when I checked in this form, the tensioner spring gets gummed up and cause the nut to slip when trying to mount the belt. I didn't know this and increased the torque snapping the bolt and made me use some bad language.

While you had the right angle arm out, you should have mounted a new bolt on the arm and WELD it to the arm so it does not spin... This problem will be solved once and forever.
