Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hello everyone, i was wondering how many of you park your carrera for the winter and drive something else? mine is still quite new to me and i was planning on driving it all the time. thanks

POST 2Original post

I drive a Cayenne S daily, 996 goes away after first snow. Many drive them year round. I drove a 951 through 8 winters.

POST 3Original post

Got mine this year in May. Planning to store in thrid car garage space. WIll drive G35 if not in my 911.

POST 4Original post

We don't get snow in Houston, but if we are expecting really bad storms I drive the truck.

POST 5Original post

I drove my C4S all winter - was better than any SUV I've ever driven. I thought that ground clearance might be an issue in a really heavy snow, but it was never a problem for me.

POST 6Original post

I have a 996TT, but drive a Subaru Outback in the winter. My mechanic is leery about the corrosion on the ancillary components of the car, my kids are scared about my fighting for space on the tollway with the plows. I had a 996 Targa that I wrecked last winter after I tangled with a semi. There's a thread on this forum someplace with all the details. So, yes, I will park my TT and drive the Subi all winter long. All the time anxiously awaiting the spring thaw and that first heavy rain to wash the salt away. larry

POST 8Original post

I have a Range Rover HSE for my daily driver, the C4S is just a weekend car.

POST 9Original post

My 996 is a weekend car, I drive the F350 daily for work I also plow some driveways and parking lots in the winter. I plan on driving the 996 on weekends during the winter when the roads weather permits(not snowing)

POST 10Original post

I've driven my C4S with proper winter tires for the last 3 winters. I'm currently shopping for a winter vehicle. We get so much snow here, it's sometimes a problem.

POST 11Original post

2WD, just doesn't cut it around these parts in the winter. We get quite a bit of snow around here. End of November she gets tucked away, garages, covered, trickle charger and the Tacoma, 4WD is the DD.

POST 12Original post

My 996 and 928 turbo rotate as daily drivers all year round.. here in the south we can do that.

POST 13Original post

I drive year round with occasional ski trips up north. Car has exceptional traction/handling with dedicated snow tires/rims.

POST 14Original post

Drive it year round. Turns out that the 996, with proper winter tires, is an excellent car in the snow. I actually feel safer driving it than any of my other cars. And, winter tires aren't just for the snow I learned. The first winter I didn't think I'd ever drive it in the snow so I kept my summer tires on. Perfectly dry road but temp around 35 degrees and when I tried to stop at a stop sign it was like I was driving on hockey pucks, winter tires and wheels went on the very next week.

POST 15Original post

I drove my 996 all of last winter, but that was an anomaly. During the week, I split my time between the 996 and the M3. The M3 then becomes the winter car.

POST 16Original post

I have a 2001 Hyundai Elantra that I bought from my Dad for $4000 about 4 years ago - it had 29K on it at the time, and has 42K now. He bought it new, so I am the 2nd owner. It has served me well. I use this in the winter, and to drive to the train station parking lot for my commute. I drive my 996 after work and weekends.

POST 17Original post

No, I have an alternate summer vehicle..(Jeep Liberty) See here in phoenix where it is 105+ pretty much every day from June through september it's too hot to enjoy it. I drive my 4S on weekends or whenever the rest of the year.

POST 19Original post

My E46 BMW is perfect for drives into NYC and bad weather. Wife's GL 320 diesel is called to work when she comes along for the ride.

POST 21Original post

I planned to drive the C4 all year long. I wanted the C4 so I could enjoy a Porsche all year long. And though we share carpooling to work with my wife's 968 Cab - it sees more summer use for Sunny days like today. I do have a second set of wheels with Conti DWS for winter which is not that bad here in Seattle most years. But the back-up plan for really bad weather or trips to the hilly areas is the Audi A6 Quattro with Michelin ICE tires. It is also the "Dog" and Home Depot car. It is also odd man out on Garage space.

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hi everyone, well i have winter here, and the thought of parking my carrera does not sound good to me. i plan on trying this winter with it and wanted to hear what you guys had to say. my take away is (and all my cars get a dedicated set of snow tires and rims) get snow tires, have fun. thanks

POST 23Original post

996 C2 driven all year, but usually stays out of snow in the winter...shares duty, especially during snow, with a Saab 97x (not so much because of the the p-car but the other bonehead drivers on the road in the winter)

POST 24Original post

I drive mine year round. Snow tires are a must and makes the car come alive in the snow.

POST 25Original post

Wish I would have bought a C4. My C2 with snow tires (and sometimes chains) performs pretty good in light snow or ice... and I can only imagine how fun it would be with AWD. I'm sure I would get in trouble.

POST 26Original post

Its my toy, I have a trailblazer I drive. But I do manage to put over 15K a year on.. I dont store it but I do drive it a lot less in the winter. I drive it when the raods are dry in the winter.

POST 27Original post

F&%K NO! Are you crazy to Garage a Depreciating Asset?

POST 28Original post

The 996 works just fine in the snow and I drive mine all winter. It's just a car, and dare I say that you're missing out on half the fun if you don't 4-wheel drift a Porsche a few times per week in the white stuff. As a kid I always thought owning a Porsche would be the best thing ever...turns out the best thing ever is being able to own a Porsche that you can treat just like any other car.

I park it. And drive a BMW 325xi winter & Sumer. Goes great in the snow.

POST 30Original post

im sure with good snows it drives very well but i cant imagine doing it myself, i picked up an s4 and use that for the winter, with snows its almost unstoppable

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

kookie, question - are you running: front 18 x 8 with 225/40-18 rear 18 x 10 with 265/35-18 thanks

POST 33Original post

I have had my C4s for over 2 years now and live up in the great white north. I have a g37x sedan, a Tundra quad cab, and Edge etc. All intended for daily and winter use, but for some reason I can never seem to put the porsche away. sometime clearance can be an issue (3 days a year) and its AWD makes it much more controllable and easy to drive than any other vehicle I own.

POST 34Original post

I am having the hardest time getting rid of my 325XI which I waited 6 months for. Its a great car. I would sell my 996 for another pcar before I get rid of the Bimmer..

POST 35Original post

When I lived in NY and NJ I had a winter vehicle. Believe it or not it was a 92 Geo Storm!!! It was actually in good condition and I liked the fact that I could park it anywhere in Manhattan and not care a bit about it. When I moved to Charlotte in 2004 I went to a Porsche-only mode since this city shuts down when it snows and I can always use my wife's SUV if I really have to go anywhere. Plus I have the option of working from home so a winter vehicle is just not needed here.

POST 36Original post

2010 Ford Escape. Too much sand/salt and bad drivers up here for our 5ish months of "winter"... plus with no traction/stability control, I think the C2 would be a handful.

POST 37Original post

I keep mine parked when show is on the ground. I have a Dodge Durango 5.9 R/T for winter use, and the wife has an Audi A6 Quattro. The sand and gravel they lay on the ground here for traction will tear a windshield and paint up!!!

POST 39 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

what an idiot - my most sincere appology. computers and typing are not my forte. i hope this does not wreck my time here. if you are still listening, i see you use the 11 inch wide wheels in the rear with the 265 tires. it does not stretch them too much? vange ================================ Quote: Originally Posted by vange_c4s kookie, question - are you running: front 18 x 8 with 225/40-18 rear 18 x 11 with 265/35-18 thanks lol Kookie? Yes and No. Its Streched but its Fine. Looks ok for the Winter and Car drives much better than 295/35/18's i drove on for the 4 Winters before that. Many many people run this Combo with no Issues My Buddy runs 225/40 on a 11" Rim on his Lexus. Looks Sick!

POST 41Original post

Drive the Mercedes ML 320 during the winter. This is our second one. Seems like a lot of people have problems with this model but for us it has been solid. Really great for those days when the snow is crazy.

Depends how you like your rust served? These cars get it bad.

POST 43Original post

I'm kind of a AWD kook. All three of my cars have awd and snow tires. I continue to drive them throughout the winter months.

POST 44 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hi zookie, thanks for reply, i was not sure... so you are running the front 18 x 8 with 225/40-18 rear 18 x 11 with 265/35-18 configuration with no trouble. great news. a friend at work has the same setup with knockoff gt3 wheels (not my favorite as i like turbo twist or bbs) but for winter it will work. i will see if he is willing to sell them for a reasonable price. best, vange

I am going to brave this winter in my 03 c2. I unloaded my 06 mazdaspeed6 (awd) a few months ago. I'll be sporting new snow tires. Hopefully I wont have to take a trip to the local subaru dealer in january to add another vehicle to the fleet.

Who wants to drive a stick in stop & go traffic? My daily car in summer and winter now is a 2009 BMW 535i Touring. I use to have a 2006 BMW X5 4.8is (anyone BMW fans on the board know what that is?). Sigh... I miss the "baraaaaaap!!!" of the exhaust on that thing.
