I did the fan mod and made sure I used 0w40 Mobile 1.

Cleaning my radiators helped a bit but it's still higher than previous years.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys,
As some of you may know i recently changed my water pump, Low temp thermostat and expansion tank. Reason i changed all this is, i was hoping to solve the high temperature i was experiencing.
Now, my porky's temp maintains itself at about 82C for the first 30 mins and then shoots up to 100C under city traffic. When i get on the expressway, the only way i can drop the temp is by driving at the speed of at least 120km/h.
I am trying to figure out how can i bring the temp back to 82C. Any ideas?
Cheers
fan mod - do a search
this is the reason I am NOT for the lower temp t-stat. The thing controling your temp is the size of the system and the amount of airflow....there is nothing a t-stat does (IMO) to change that. You either need more water, or cool the water off (fans) or it will saturate and hit the mark (at which point POOF, the fans come on)
DUH
Even with my fans on, my temp still does not go down. Could it be due to a choke in the system? I recently have seen my coolant in the tank rise to almost the cap.
Cheers
you need to decribe ALL the factors:
ambient temp included, and what do you mean the "fans on" ? and still doesnt go down? - if that were the case the fans should never turn off if you just let it idle in a parking lot....??? i doubt that is the case unless you have some very very strange issue....
when you say "fans on" are they on High or Low...are both running and where are you taking the temp...remember the fans are very far from the motor and cool water takes time to get back to the motor and be monitored for temp....
I'm not saying you dont have a problem but I am saying you are not describing it well and not providing all the details nor have you check the system static over time, you are driving up the highway watching your digital temps fluctuate and assuming there are problems...right?
+1 - temp rating of the t-stat is simply when it will open based on the coolant temp. I assume that opening at 160, meaning coolant begins to circulate fully through the cooling system, the car will take longer to reach the 180 operating temperature.
I agree with you both that a lower temperature thermostat will not lower overall operating temperatures. Personally I installed one in an attempt to minimize hot spots within the engine prior to the opening of the thermostat. So it's less about the over all temperature and more about trying to minimize localized hot spots but getting the coolant circulating earlier.

As stated in previous threads your car's behaviour seems normal for summer driving in the city when the ambient temperature is above 27C. My does the same thing. I have the fan mod and can keep the temperature around the 92C to 95C in city driving.
When my fans are on, they only come on low at about 100C and high at about 105C on the climate control mode. When the fans are on, i observed the climate control mode for any changes in temp but no changes was observed. This observation was done when i was in the parking lot idling.
Cheers
Those temperatures are correct, based on the factory manual I posted in the other thread and my personal observations.
At idle in a parking lot is almost the most difficult situation to overcome. The water pump is circulating coolant more slowly than while driving and your airflow over the radiators is solely a function of fan speed and not by virtue of forward motion. My car cools more slowly at idle than while driving..., but I have never timed how long it takes the high speed fan to cool while stationary.
Our cars are very sensitive to heat... The radiators seem configured for open road driving.... I find even in traffic on the highway the car will run a few degrees warmer just as a result of turbulent air from other cars.
Are you sure the fans are working properly?
Otherwise the behavior appears normal to me.
If the A/C is off then the fans only come on when the coolant temp climbs to 212F (100C). The fans run until the coolant temp drops to 205F (96C).
What I have observed from my 02 Boxster:
06:53:27 - temp at 202.
06:55:08 - temp is 212F. (The fans come on.)
06:56:08 - temp is 204F. (The fans turn off.)
06:56:32 - temp is 206F.
The temp continues to climb until:
06:57:40 - temp is 212F. (The fans come on.)
But the temp remains at 212F until 06:57:58 at which time it jumps up to just over 215F.
The coolant temp remains at this temp for approx. 20 seconds then drops to 212F and continues to drop until at 07:01:33 it drops to 198F.
I just checked and the car was moving during the above.
At 06:53:27 the car was moving at 65mph and had been moving at speeds ranging from 80mph to 30mph starting from 06:47:35.
The above coolant temp climb to 212F to 215F folllowed by a drop to 205F or a bit below continued from 06:47:40 to 07:22:49 at which time I shut off the engine.
Sincerely,
Macster.
My car was exactly the same. I did the fan mod and made sure I used 0w40 Mobile 1. Thicker oil definitly makes the car run hotter, I know from experience. Clean the radiators and get in the habit of sticking the hose in the front bumper every time you wash the car and hose off the dirt on the radiators it helps, I live in Phoenix Arizona it's 105+ F here every day 4 months out of the year.
My car stays cool now and cool means the gauge stays in the zero of 180 and doesn't go past the zero.
Even stationary and with the fan on for about 10 mins, the temp still did not decrease. It stayed at 100C or the least 99C. The fans did not go off but it did not go on high speed either
Cheers
Have you changed any of the rubber hoses? Back in the day hoses would loose their intergrity and bubble out or in when hot which could mess up the coolant flow.
Yes i have changed a couple of hoses around the water pump area but thats about it. I was thinking of doing a radiator flush tmr, if thats gonna help at all ... Running out of ideas on how to lower the temp.
Cheers
Why are you trying so hard to lower the temperature? If it's not even in the range that the factory thought required the fans to be on "high", it's unlikely to be an issue. There is a range of optimum efficiency for engines when it comes to temperature. Too cold isn't desirable either...
-Shawn
I am trying hard because the temp of my car never got so high until recently. It used to stay around 85C Max. So i figured there must be something wrong with the cooling system with the sudden increase on the temp gauge.
Cheers
Did the change correlate with the change in ambient temperatures? I live in Boston, MA (not exactly a hot area) and when driving in the city my temperatures are typically in the same range. When I'm on the highway they drop into the 80's.
Here in singapore, temperatures forever stay the same. 24C-26C in the night and 30C-34C in the day.
Does a boxter run cooler as compared to 996s? I have got a friend who's boxter runs at 87C max.
Cheers
Mine is doing the same as yours all of a sudden this Summer. Cleaning my radiators helped a bit but it's still higher than previous years. The other obvious difference between the years is that it's been extremely hot since June here and I've noticed many people posting on sites about their temperature readings so I'm just going to chalk it up to climate change and sun flares.
