I thought they replaced the engine after three Rear Main Seals are replaced.....

Suggestion
I expect all RMS's would be covered, including an engine replacement if that was necessary as Porsche approaches the problem (but can't tell you when that might be, other than if the engine is out of tolerance and can't be repaired with a new seal, then I think a new engine is in order).

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was looking at a CPO eariy 02 996 C2 at a porsche dealer. I checked the service record, the car had 3 RMS, a new transmission and coolant tank replaced. The car will 've the extended 2yrs 10,000 CPO limited warranty, the sale person said the extended warranty is bumper to bumper which I doubt. Will PNA replace the whole engine under the CPO extended warranty if the RMS leak again? (I almost certain that it will) What did it take to get engine replaced. should I stay away from this car?
"Limited Warranty" doesn't sound like "bumper to bumper" to me. I thought they replaced the engine after three Rear Main Seals are replaced..... You should definitely ask the dealer directly if they will replace the engine under warranty if the RMS goes again. But then again, who needs the hassle? How many miles on the car? What's it going to cost you?
20K miles, $52500. PNA web site said it is a limited warranty, but need to chk dealer for detail, then then of course the dealer said it is bumper to bumper, so i guess i need to read the fine print.
Seems about right. I don't have any experience buying used cars though. I prefer to buy new and hang on to them. For that much dough I would get a new Cayman.
"Limited Warranty" is a legally required term that you will always see, but obviously you should read the fine print. I expect all RMS's would be covered, including an engine replacement if that was necessary as Porsche approaches the problem (but can't tell you when that might be, other than if the engine is out of tolerance and can't be repaired with a new seal, then I think a new engine is in order).
Transmissions generally not repairable so replacement is the way it is handled - probably not an indicator of future trouble.
I would make a lot of noise about the RMS and try to negotiate more discount, but you might even luck out next time RMS fails and get a new engine.
There are lots of choices out there; I'd keep looking. If a car has had lots of problems in the past it will continue to have lots of problems in the future. That is why I am hanging on to my car!

I tend to agree. With 3 RMS issues, something clearly is wrong here. If Porsche was going to replace the engine, I think they already would have.
Then again, maybe you can push for an engine replacement (done pre purchase, of course). I doubt that they would bite, but all they can say is "no".
I would consider it if I got a great deal on it.
A great deal can mean:
replace motor
lower price substaintially
combo of the two (best choice!)
I would use the RMS issue to your advantage. You are in the drivers seat here. They can't sell the car is there is not a buyer you know....so work them as hard as you can and see if they bite. If not, look elsewhere. That is how I would approach it.
As for the CPO warranty. AFAIK, it covers the powertrain, not little nicknacks like a window switch or something. Read that fine print first! Good luck.
Dicker them down alot or walk. Offer them 40k with cpo, 45 with new motor and cpo. Make your offer by phone, and abruptly hang up when they initially decline, wait 24hrs and they will call back meeting all of your demands, trust me.
Stay away. There is no assurance that a new engine would stop the leak. You'll have a hard time selling that car later even if no RMS comes back. Saving $10k doesn't really off set the risk since it's likely you'll need a new engine later and that costs over $10k if that happens after the 2 yr warranty is up.
You should be able to get a 02 996 coupe w/o stories at low mi around $50-52k easily. This one is worth $40k to me but why risk it unless you are strapped for money. Seriously, you should consider the Cayman if you don't need the backseats. Better yet, just get a 987S and save another $10k w a softtop.
Shouldn't a 2002 still have some factory warranty in effect?? Then after the CPO warranty kicks in, Is this the confusion of bumper to bumper(factory) vs limited (CPO)??
