Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'Check into this' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check into this' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Besides refilling refrigereant, you may need to clean any leaves in the nose to aid effective cooling and rid any smell.

Another thing...its a real good idea to run your AC every week or so for about 15 minutes to keep the seals lubricated.

This can run from $175 to 250.00 at your dealership and a little less probably at a good independent shop.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Get this fixed as low refrigerant w AC on can destroy compressor.
I mentioned this in another thread, but wanted to get some more feedback before I have to pay to take the car in for service.
I have a '99 C4 that I just got last week. It has the auto air. I can very seldom get any volume of cold air to come out of the dash vents.
I am aware of the compressor switching off under heavy load, but this happens almost all the time.
If you switch off the compressor, or take it out of automatic there is lots of volume. Soon as you switch it back on, there is alot of fan noise behind the dash but only a trickle of cold air comes out of the vents. I have been experimenting and this is the same as when I switch to re-circulate. The funny thing is, a few time after I have driven for a bit, then switched the air back on, it works - no consistency.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
In fully automatic mode the ECU doesn't allow the blower to run at higher speeds until the cooling evaporator is CHILLED by the flow of refrigerant. Sounds like you're low on refrigerant.
I would have a car AC specialist check into this. They can detect leak and measure refrigerant level. Besides refilling refrigereant, you may need to clean any leaves in the nose to aid effective cooling and rid any smell. Get this fixed as low refrigerant w AC on can destroy compressor.
A good air conditioning service will include a system pressure and leak test. Inspection of hoses, lines and switches, etc. A temperature test at two or more vents. Then they will drain the refrigerant and refill your system to max then conduct a final presure and temperature check. This can run from $175 to 250.00 at your dealership and a little less probably at a good independent shop.
I had two AC services since I got my car and all works very well and its real cold when its on.
