Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys, is it a better idea to change out the oil sump pan and gasket when i service next? I am gonna change oil brands and was thinking that it would also be better for the oil change. Ideas?

POST 2Original post

I'ts not needed, all brands of automotive oil are compatable. If this was not true, a complete motor flush would be needed whenever changing brands. A bit of residual oil always remains in the pan, lifters, pockets in the cam area, etc. Unless you are a seasoned mechanic, you run the risk of doing more damage removing the pan than not. I tried to school someone to change their own oil on a vehicle with an aluminum pan. First thing they do is over tighten the drain plug thinking it's tight in an attempt to loosen it. Bingo! Now it is loose, real loose and it won't tighten in either direction. Time for a new pan. It's very easy to over torque the pan screws and damage the motor case. Most people working with aluminum over tighten everything and compromise the integrety of what they are screwing into. Also certain thread lockers may be needed or the opposite, anti-seize, depending on the application. There are many improper ways to do the job.
