Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I think you have to buy the whole latch mechanism to get the red lever/cover. The part numbr of the latch mechanism is 996.511.053.02 for years 99-05. The list price is $146.45, Sunset, Suncoast, etc. should be about $112.
I have a black car and was considering wrapping it in black electrical tape. I'm a Texas redneck so this repair would be right inline with my lifestyle.
There is that liquid rubber that is advertised showing guys dipping plyer handles in the stuff or painting it on. One of the colors it comes in is red. It makes a good smooth coat.
To 2300cc and Dharn55,
I have the same issue and was at the dealership last month and they actually keep several latch assemblies in stock. They do not offer the red plastic cover separately so you do need to buy a complete new latch assembly if you really want that part. Then there is the removal of the old, and installation and adjustment of the new. Oh, and side-by-side, the replacement latch lever and red cover are longer and flatter than the original.
I shied away from the expense and effort to go that route.
Instead, I went to Home Depot to the electrical department and found both red and black plastic rod end covers, used to protect your hands from the raw cut ends of metal rod. The plastic ends are very pliable and slide over the existing faded and cracked red latch piece and within a couple weeks completely assumed the shape of the red piece beneath.
I chose the black one. I don't care about concours orginality, and, since I know where the latch is at, I don't need a red thing to draw it to my attention. If I sell the car, I can put the red one on if the new owner needs red. Left unsaid, the next owner probably won't know the difference anyway.
Sort of like a black condom for your hood latch.
That'll work great. What I think is best for something like that protective piece is a thick soft rubber sort of cap material. I think if you would try that the little handle and its rubber piece can be accidently flexed to hit the bottom of the hood before it is released. Thats a major scratch if its unprotected. At least thats the way the thing looks like to me. I'm not testing to see if contact can be made though.
