Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I had the same experience, but let the car drain for a week.....in that time I filled a coffee can to overflowing with oil.....(It was only just driping when I put the coffee can under to catch the "dregs", I realized I had the wrong filter and left the car in the shop until the following Saturday) The completely empty system took 10 quarts to refill..........

I always ran 15W - 40W in all seasons before the SC with no problems with the variocam operation.

Here in Chicago, I use the 0W because of the extreme cold temperature in the winter and the oiling requirements of the supercharger.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I know this DIY has been posted before. I need some guidance on changing oil/filter for an 02 coupe. Also, any reason not to use AMSOIL synthetic. I am able to get some for free from a friend who is a dealer
Thanks,
Jeff
Jeff,
My 02 coupe is easier to change oil than my Toyota 4runner. Coming from 993 this was a VERY(X2) pleasant surprise for me. Here's the DIY. Buy the 1 dollar oil plug washer.

Use the 10W - 40W and you will be fine. The climate in Connecticut is not cold enough to have to go down to a 0W oil. Regardless of what oil you use, always make sure you bring the car to full operating temp before getting on it.
Enjoy the free oil.
1 thing I forgot to mention, I let mine drain overnight(with filter replacement). The next morning, I initialy put in 8.5 quart(manual says 8.71qt with filter replacement), the dip stick showed mid full. I then let the engine run for a couple of minutes. Shut the engine and re-measure after 10 mins, the dip stick was not even showing any oil and the gage indication is in the lowest bar. So I ended up pouring a total of 9 quarts to get the gage and dipstick to 3/4 full. That was a week ago and is now stable at that level. I only measure it when the car is in my garrage, just my way of having it on a level ground.
Hi Lee...
I have no issue w/Amsoil. I just have stayed with Mobile 1 (factory fill) since the beginning and its worked well for me in my cars in various grades. I know my neighbor up the street uses it and he loves the stuff in his Ferrari when its not in the shop.
I'm really very brand loyal is about all. If I find something that works good for me, then I usually stick with it.
BTW GI Joes in LO next to the Safeway on Boones Ferry has Mobile 10-40. It really tee's me off because I have to search around for 0-40...but 10-40 would work just as well.
What polish and wax have you decided to put on your car...just curious...
Jim
Jim,
I took the lazy way out and went with Porsche hardwax. It's easy to apply and I don't have to deal with wax dust and those nasty white buildups around the edges. It works well with the Mr. Clean system (no interactions). I used it on the outside of my wheels too for now. When I get some spacers I'll take the wheels off and probably to Rejex on the insides. Once a year I figure I'll take it to someone who can do a downtown wax and detail.
Thanks for the tip on GIJoes.

Gotta love these oil cooled Porsches.............
Changing oil on a 996 is as easy as any domestic car.
Stay with the factory reccomended 0-40 weight oil as
heavier oil will effect the operation of the vario-cam plus system.
I agree that changing the oil in the 996 is a piece of cake, but it is not necessary to run a 0W-40W oil in mild climates. Here in Chicago, I use the 0W because of the extreme cold temperature in the winter and the oiling requirements of the supercharger. I always ran 15W - 40W in all seasons before the SC with no problems with the variocam operation.
