Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'cracked housing' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'cracked housing' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check 99 cars had issues' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Coolant level was a little below minimum line, and still looks like coolant not oatmeal, add some porsche coolant mixed 60/40 w/water, it was probably the way I was driving that sloshed the low level indicator to go off.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

after about 3 trips to the dealer they finally fixed it.
Driving a little spirited last night when the red light at the end of temp guage started to flash, temp was in normal range a bit over the 180 mark, shut off restatrted no more flashing light no problem with car. I haven't looked at manual yet any ideas??
as said by everyone, most likely just be coolant tank or overheating.. etc.. happened to me when i first got my 996... did it once and never happened again.. then a few months later.. this same thing happened to me when i had to have my third engine replaced... if the coolant tank isn't cracked... and if it keeps doing it, even after refilling and checking it out... you may need a new engine, which hopefully it isn't the latter.. cause by porsche dealer.. cylinder came out of the sleeve lining, from faulty engine rebuild from porsche.. causing this the temp gauge to flash after 10-15 mins every time i started driving it... hopefully if that is the case you are under warranty :I
Uhhh.... Bob thanks for the reply, and scaring the crap out of me. But only happened once, the engine was not overheated and the oil looks like oil, no antifreeze mix in it so I don't think it is an internal engine problem, car still pulls like a train and no funny noises. And it is still under porsche cert warranty so I should be cool.
The flashing coolant light can also be a signal that air needs to be let out of the coolant system. If and when the light starts flasing again pull the release...see Loren's DIY instructions for installing the 3rd radiator on the proper procedure to purge the system (think there is a diagram...or is that in the owners manual?).
Well bob has a point. My 99 C4 did the flashing light thing. When I went to top off the coolant, i noticed an oatmeal like substance in the tank. took it to the dealer and yup, the engine went. No other warning signes. bu the way, had the coolant tank replaced 6 months ago. The service manager told me in the 99's the walls between the oil and coolant in the block was thin, and after time, could be broken down by the coolant. Then the coolant and oil will intermix. I had NO SYMPTOMS. the car ran perfectly all the way to the dealer. No overheating, smoking, or loss of HP....just that oatmeal stuff in the coolant tank, and the light brown stuff in the oil filler area. now my Boxster had that light on and it was just the tank.....
hmm.... my friend's 2001 had this problem so I don't know about limiting the "thin wall" argument to the 99's... I had my coolant tank replaced cause it was dripping (after a drive) over the drivers side exhaust tip.... I was glad to see it dripping cause you know at least its leaking outside of the car... vs. dissappearing into the motor.. yikes!!!

Thanx for the advice from all, still not sure about what the buying a porsche from a ford dealer comment meant, or why someone would do that, but all seems good and my car is still under porsche warranty if anything alarming pops up. Thanx again for the advice.
if you're under warranty, don't even worry about it.. whatever happens, you'll be covered.. just enjoy the car, and if worse comes to worse, just bring it in to have whatever needs to be done fixed for free...
