Suggestion

Original diagnosis was that the Lamda's were shot, so had them replaced (400..ouch) and it's no bl00dy different!...according to an Indy specialist here in the UK, it sounds like it's almost certainly the MAF, but would be interested in obtaining a reading and cleaning it first!

Suggestion

Ooops, second question (sorry!)....when I replace the MAF, will I also have to reset anything in the OBD?...Up until now, because the MAF is failing, apparently the Lamda's try and compensate, but run out of range, then log a Lamda Fault in the OBD (erroneously, it seems)...does this HAVE to be cleared in order to fix the problem, or will a reset at next service suffice?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 996 air flow sensor has gone bad; any of you fine folks know where I can get a replacement? Can you diy easily or do you have to re-map the computer after installation? So say a local So. Cal. shop. Thank you in advance for the any info! Alan

POST 2Original post

Plenty of online places to get the Bosch MAF for about $220. Why do you think you need a new one. Needing a new MAF is a common fallback for the Dealer. They can be cleaned. What is the reading on your scanner?

POST 4Original post

I use carb cleaner and saturate it then with rubbing alcohol. Electoinic's spray works well too. Find out what it is reading first by using your scanner. Then you can see if the reading improved.

POST 5Original post

Right now I'm up near 97% ve so I'm assuming it's reading fine (can't image this engine is much more efficient than that). Thanks for the input.

POST 6Original post

How did you guys get a reading of 97% ('scuse my ignorance here!!)...are you using the PSM-II module to plug into the diag port? Interested because my C2 is about to have a new MAF installed, symptom being that there's hesitation throught the rev-range when under full load. Original diagnosis was that the Lamda's were shot, so had them replaced (400..ouch) and it's no bl00dy different!...according to an Indy specialist here in the UK, it sounds like it's almost certainly the MAF, but would be interested in obtaining a reading and cleaning it first! Thanks S

Cheers (again) and sorry to hijack your thread 2na S

POST 8Original post

I have know idea what 97% means. You should either measure the voltage or the air volume as reported to the computer by the MAF.

POST 9Original post

But presumably you need the official Porsche diag tools to be able to get this info from the computer?...or am i missing something?

POST 11Original post

Most good scanners should not only be able to give you the MAF voltage but the airflow in lbs/min (or whatever units you prefer). Using this information you can calculate what percentage of the total possible airflow the engine is capable of is being supplied. Alteratively (if you don't like math) some scanners will make the calculation for you and make a nice plot of the volumetric efficiency...like this:

POST 12Original post

So what is the volume of air at idle in your graph?

POST 13Original post

This graph is at full load. That's the only way to measure VE. When the throttle plate is nearly closed, like at idle, I measure around 0.75 lb/min of air. I get as low as 0.73 as as high as 0.79 lb/min.

POST 16Original post

Ausgezeichnet Ubermensch! Eine Frage bitte... You have just the PC-based OBII Scan Tool, right? And not one of the bundled pro offerings, correct? By the way, where does it attach to the car? Again, thanks.

POST 17Original post

Yes, I'm just using the PC-based tool that connects at the OBD-II port by your left knee while sitting in the drivers seat. The software is simple, effective, and valuable if you're an engineering geek like me
