Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

So, may come up to hwy spd in 2nd, then shift to 5th or 6th (to try to get back some of the fuel I used for entertainment in 2nd)...

Suggestion
There's no reason to start in second gear with the 996's manual transmission unless you're on sheer ice or you like replacing clutches more often than most.
Leading evidence: 'Use entertainment in 2nd)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace clutches more often than most' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Who in their right mind, using a manual, would "launch" their 996 in 2nd gear?

In an old VW bug, 1st gear was so short, if I were on a downward hill so that when I released the brake, the car was already rolling -- I occasionally used second.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I guess I don't get the question, or at least the <wink, wink, nudge, nudge> part about "admitting" it. There's no reason to start in second gear with the 996's manual transmission unless you're on sheer ice or you like replacing clutches more often than most.
Neither do I. Less fun, more clutch wear, not like these things are torque monsters to begin with... maybe I'm going to learn something, here, but I'm not tempted by this so far.
The only time I ever started in 2nd was a couple times when I was on glare ice and the torque of the engine tended to break away the rear wheels.
In an old VW bug, 1st gear was so short, if I were on a downward hill so that when I released the brake, the car was already rolling -- I occasionally used second.
In the Porsche, the only time I will skip a gear is when a low gear has brought me up to my desired speed--then shift to the gear I will cruise in. So, may come up to hwy spd in 2nd, then shift to 5th or 6th (to try to get back some of the fuel I used for entertainment in 2nd)...
Is this post only for Tip's? Who in their right mind, using a manual, would "launch" their 996 in 2nd gear? Come to think of it the statement does not make sence for a Tip either, as long as we are talking "launch" right?
Mickey,
Excuse my ignorance in this, I have never owned or driven a Tip, but what is up with 1st gear? Why is it a joke? is the gearing that bad on a Tip?
The TIP's "to the ground" first gear ratio (considering final gear ratio) is virtually the same as the 6 speed. Therefore, there is no differerence starting out in first gear in a TIP or a 6 speed. The TIP is designed to start is 1st gear only...not second.
Actually, the Tip has a - 3.60 : 1 - first gear with a - 3.45 : 1 - final, the manual has a - 3.82 : 1 - with a - 3.44 : 1 - if my memory serves.......
this results in a 12.42 : 1 overall vs the manuals 13.14 : 1. Couple this with the parasitic drag of the slushbox and you got a wimpy launch, I know first hand, haha
