Oh, FWIW, it was the right rear tire, just like someone else mentioned.
Leading evidence: 'right rear tire, just like someone else mentioned' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'right rear tire, just like someone else mentioned' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check air pressure' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I felt an unusual vibration, so I checked air pressure.

nails) and although hopefully not in our Porsches, probably the right sidewall gets curbed more.

Suggestion
For example, one time I was getting ready for a road trip with my two small boys and for some reason I decided to check the tire pressure before hitting the road, you know it the RR was less than 20psi with a big freakin nail in it....sh**!

Now I do a walkaround almost every time I drive the car and check tire pressure every weekend.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My day started great, until at 80 mph I blew out my RR tire, seemed to have picked up a nail the day before, unbenounced to me. Changing a tire during the am rush with no shoulder to stop on was a PIA.
I must say the porsche tire change setup is excellent, thank god my yr have spares. The car with psm was remarkably stable, awsome system.
Of course the night before my wife told me my RR looked a little low, I, of course blew it off, what could she know??
That sucks! I know I'm **** retentive, but I always do a walk around before I hit the road. And tire pressure checks often, especially if I'm going to hit it hard!
Sorry to hear about your day. I had a flat 2 weeks ago RR as well. No blow out, however. It was on the sidewall. It was a slow leak and I was able to get air into it without it loosing it too fast. Luckily, I had bought a road hazard warranty with the dealership. They took care of one of the tires and I had to buy the second ($355 for my Pirelli junk).
At least you'll have two new tires and above all else, you're safe.
I have smart tire moniters in my summer tires and it is very helpful. I do not have a hard mount but just plug the moniter into my cigarette lighter and it will give me readings in a few minuits. The only hassel is on installation, you have to go to a Tire Rack or similar dealer who knows how to do it. I think Porsche should make tire pressure moniters standard. My M5 has it and it is a 2001. Will
Chris - I know exactly how you feel after my LR tire ordeal last week. It is a good thing about the spare tire, but it does look strange with that skinny little thing on the car!
If you have Pzero Rosso, I can get you a used one for cheap. That'll save you from buying a new rear set. You can also ask dealer to see if they have any matching tires. They usually have some in their lot by service bay when someting similar happened to someone else, ending up with one decently worn tire.
Oh it blew, in more ways than one. I must have hit the nail yesterday, lost air on the road and the inner sidewall blew out circumfrentially and the car nearly spun at 80mph on the grand central this am. sorry if I held anybody up. Yes it blew.
I had a right rear blow on an E39 BMW a few years ago--it was a really hot day and I always wondered if the increased pressure had something to do with it.
I'll bet right sided blow-outs are a lot more common than left. The right side tends to pick up more road debris (i.e. nails) and although hopefully not in our Porsches, probably the right sidewall gets curbed more.
I would have expected you to notice that when you let up on the gas, the car would have pulled to the right if it was low on air, especially if the leak began the day before. I have drivien over 1.5 million miles and never had a blow out. (Lucky I guess). I have had many flats, but low pressure in any tire is easy to notice and correct before catastrophic damage occurs. Ribbed tires are designed to give you that protection, as they can loose half their pressure and still be driven on. But the low pressure is easily noticed while driving.
The best part was discovering a stripped lug bolt on the spacer, last time I dismounted race tires a neighbor helped me do that side. I chased the threads with a tap last night, good as new, only the first thread was involved.
I had this a few weeks ago, and there was no pulling. I felt an unusual vibration, so I checked air pressure. Pressure was down to 15 psi thanks to a nail. The vibration was very faint and easy to miss, so I'm seriously considering one of those pressure sensor systems. I think the blowouts happen if you drive too much at low pressure, the tire heats up abnormally and eventually self-destructs.
Oh, FWIW, it was the right rear tire, just like someone else mentioned.
Chris man that sucks, but it could have been alot worse, and don't worry I wont tell ya to listen to your wife in the future......I know mine would still be wrong!
I'm going to second this observation. About a month after I got my car I lost the, you guessed it, right rear tire. The tire had gone completely flat and I didn't notice anything until the tire bottomed out going over a lane marker. Then I heard a really loud uncharacteristic thud by the time I pulled over the entire sidewall was gone. Now I do a walkaround almost every time I drive the car and check tire pressure every weekend.
Chris: And I'm glad you're good. Last weekend I discovered a nail in my LR tire, while doing a regular air pressure check. Got it fixed on Tuesday, and hopefully it will hold on tomorrow's fun run through the Malibu Canyons. So far so good.
BTW where did you place the blown tire/wheel after you where done installing the spare?. Its amazing how little room we have to take carry our damaged wheels/tires with us.
I don't know man, these low profile tires give very little warning in my experience. For example, one time I was getting ready for a road trip with my two small boys and for some reason I decided to check the tire pressure before hitting the road, you know it the RR was less than 20psi with a big freakin nail in it....sh**! I never noticed any major change in the driving characteristics, maybe because I was commuting to work so few miles (3 miles each way) at the time.
Sorry to hear it CJ but it could have been worse. At least you'll have new rears now.
40th, porsche actually includes this nice tidy no mess on your chinos tire change setup. A large plastic bag to be used as a blanket/later to carry the tire, porsche embossed of course, about 6 prs of useless clear plastic gloves/porsche embossed and some other crapola ,including a small porsche napkin to pat you forhead I guess. I put the shredded rim/tire in the bag in the backseat, it fits the tire perfectly. After I got to the office I called TR and overnighted a fresh set of rears, as they had 15k on them and were starting to howl anyways, I had hoped to wait until the spring and get 4 new ones, oh well.
Thanks guys, keep the shiney side up and the dirty side down. STILL the best car I've ever owned!
