Porsche used solid flywheels for years, always using a sprung disc, the rubber centered ones always failed but that is another story.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

i'm getting ready to do a flywheel and clutch on my car. some people say i need a spring loaded clutch disk if i eliminate the dual mass flywheel. while this makes sense to me, i've heard of people installing a solid clutch disk and LWF with no problems. i'm looking to hear from people who have a LWF and a solid clutch disk. how's it feel? fairly driveble? noisy? do you feel like you made a mistake, or is the solid disk just fine? thanks for the input.

Whether it would bother your or not, I have no idea, but I see no benefit, but only negative to not using a spring loaded disc with a sold flywheel. Not only will solid to solid increase stress on the drivetrain, but your disc, PP and FW will wear considerably faster. I have done it many times in the past with other cars, only to have problems.

POST 3Original post

I agree completely with 1999. Here is my response to the same question you posted in the 986 forum: A solid disc will work, it just isn't the correct way to do it. It will rattle, but big deal. The problem is that you have completely eliminated any dampening in the driveline and as a result will have more stress on the driveline components. Porsche used solid flywheels for years, always using a sprung disc, the rubber centered ones always failed but that is another story. Check around, those that know will tell you to use the proper disc with the proper flywheel... dual mass, solid disc, solid flywheel, sprung disc. In the end the end the decision is up to you. Todd
