Just as a point of reference I used a guy named Bill Hood who brought my car on a 3-car transporter door to door for $675 from Houston to Atlanta.

I used Intercity to transport my C2 Cab this Spring from an out of state dealer.

Their so-called enclosed carriers are not true enclosed (they're open on the bottom and have cloth sides, so all the road crud sprays up and you car gets very dirty), and they use subcontractors for pick up and/or delivery.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ok, I think I'm getting closer to completing the transaction with the out-of-state seller, so I now need to solicit car transport/shipping recommendations. The main problem I'm running into is the ground clearance of the 996 -- it has side skirts and an aero kit (and the car's suspension has been dropped), so it doesn't have the requisite 4 inches of ground clearance that most shipping cos need (and I may now have to cancel my transport order with Dependable Auto Shippers because of that).
Has anyone else heard of a company that can ship low ground clearance cars like this without much of a hassle? DAS wanted $600 terminal-to-terminal, which is a price range I'd like to stick around.. Any suggestions and/or recs would be much appreciated.
Thanks all.
I've used Horseless Carriage a few times with great results. InterCity Lines also has a great reputation (and they're the exclusive shipper for the Carrera GT, and also ship many new Porsches to the dealers). Only use one of the top tier carriers, and request top loading. They know how to handle high end cars, including lowered cars, and the extra expense is well spent.
Dependable Auto Shippers are terrible--stay away from them. They damaged my last Carrera. Their so-called enclosed carriers are not true enclosed (they're open on the bottom and have cloth sides, so all the road crud sprays up and you car gets very dirty), and they use subcontractors for pick up and/or delivery. Plus your car may be moved from one truck to another along the way, inviting damage.
InterCity is great! They'll make sure your car is properly ramped to fit on their horizontal lift into the trailer, which is completely enclosed. You may, however, pay a premium over the low bidder...

Another vote for InterCity. They transported a 356B from Atlanta and a Ferrari Dino (very low ground clearance) from Fla., both to Long Island and with no problems or damage.
Intercity quoted me a price of $1,150, and Horseless Carriage quoted me $800 - I see intercity gets alot of high recommendations here (and that's certainly worth alot in my book), but is it really worth almost $400 more than horseless carriage - a company that also specializes in transporting high-end or antique cars? Horseless said there'd be no problems with my car's ground clearance.
Anybody have any BAD experiences with Horseless Carriage (or know of anyone else who has?) I know intercity is worth a premium, but I'm not so sure its worth $400 more...
Thanks guys.
Horseless transports all the Ferrari's that are flown over from Italy for US delivery; if they are Ferrari's choice that was a good enough vote for me.
InterCity for me. From Boston to Bay area to the docks. Then on a ship to Honolulu. Then on a different ship to Big Island. No damage whatsoever. I was pleased, to say the least.
Intercity moved my Cup car from FL to MA in 32 hours, door to door! (picked up in FL Thursday AM, at my house Friday afternoon).
They rolled the car on and off (zero ramp angle with elevator lift gate); never even started the motor (they do the same thing with Carrera GT as well).
Could not have been happier wtih the service.
I had problems with DAS several years ago shipping a Volvo. Timing/delivery issues, car was damaged, etc. Also had a sudden horrendous oil leak a couple of weeks later on an otherwise completely troublefree car (if I recall, it was an RMS, although I didn't know the significance at the time). Can't directly attribute directly to DAS, but adds to my suspicion the car was handled very roughly. I would not use them again.
Rama,
Just as a point of reference I used a guy named Bill Hood who brought my car on a 3-car transporter door to door for $675 from Houston to Atlanta. It was not an enclosed carrier but the 3-car is pretty far off the ground and they do not load any cars on top of it. I just prayed that there would be no hail... If you're interested, you can go to wrhinc.com for more info. It took week and I had my car.
By the way, I wouldn't do the passthrough transaction with the dealer to get the Porsche Certified warranty unless you really like to pay sales tax. One of the good things about living in Georgia is that you pay no sales tax on a used car if you buy it from a private party. If you buy from a dealer my county commissioner gets his 7%.
I hope everything works out well for you.
