before I adjusted the suspension, I dropped from the factory "max load" psi settings of 36F / 44R down to 33F / 38R.

Having the ability to adjust my suspension damper settings really helps the fine-tuning process, so if you're on a stock suspension you may have a different experience.
Leading evidence: 'Adjust suspension, i dropped' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust suspension damper settings really helps the fine-tuning process' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Suggestion
Be aware, that rear tires, at least in my experience, will wear out in the centres running 44psi in normal street use.

I have Michelin AS3+ on my stock 99 and run stock pressures of 36/44 F/R.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

That fixed the new harshness and has it about the same ride quality as the lower pressures but higher rear damper settings.
When I put on the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires a few weeks ago, I was initially disappointed somewhat because I thought just putting them on would fix every and all problems. I found that my adjustable coilovers' settings were the main problem. Once I fixed that everything was great... but... and this is a big but... before I adjusted the suspension, I dropped from the factory "max load" psi settings of 36F / 44R down to 33F / 38R. This was based upon reading online about a TSB which lowered the tire pressures for cars not driven at max load. All coilover settings were made after the tire pressure change. So... today I figured I'd put it back to the 36F / 44R that the tire shop had set it at to see how it drove with the fixed suspension settings.
The front felt fine, but the rear gained a little bit of harshness, so I kept the front at 25 clicks out of 30, and dropped the rear from 23 clicks out of 30, down to 20 clicks. That fixed the new harshness and has it about the same ride quality as the lower pressures but higher rear damper settings. One thing I noticed is that everything kind of firmed up and sharpened up a little bit. Even the braking seems a little better. That could be in my head, though. But as far as the steering... it seems sharper. Cornering on a ramp seems a little more planted. There was a little bit of a mid-corner weight shift with the lower tire pressure that seems to have disappeared. High speed stability and floatiness (which already was much improved from the stock suspension and Kumho tires) seems to be even just a little bit better now.
It's ever so slightly harsher over bumps than before, but that might be solved with one or two clicks on the coilovers. Overall, both tire pressure setups were good, but I think I'm going to stay at the higher pressures. Having the ability to adjust my suspension damper settings really helps the fine-tuning process, so if you're on a stock suspension you may have a different experience.
I hope this helps someone down the line. With this car, I feel as though I am finding that I am disagreeing with a lot of what is posted online. Maybe I sound like a contrarian, but I'm not trying to be. I'm just sharing my experiences as a fumble along trying to improve my car's dynamics.
EDIT: Dropped the rear tire pressure to 40 psi. Seems to be a sweet spot for the rears to take out the crashing. I had to lower the damping on the coilovers more than I wanted at 44 psi to get compliance. Fronts somehow seem compliant no matter what damping or tire pressure it's at. The rear of the 996 seems to be the what you need to dial in with respect to ride quality.
Be aware, that rear tires, at least in my experience, will wear out in the centres running 44psi in normal street use. Lower pressures seem to even out wear.
I have Michelin AS3+ on my stock 99 and run stock pressures of 36/44 F/R. Ive put 15,000 miles on the tires and theres still plenty of life left, and the tires seem to be wearing evenly.
