I had the car flatbedded to nearest (90 miles away) dealer and had the AOS replaced.
Leading evidence: 'Replace car flatbedded' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check oil filter without draining the sump' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. You can check the oil filter without draining the sump.

I suspected the MAF due to the error codes (P1128/P1130 IIRC -- anyhow, something about the DME at its enriching limit) and decided I could limp somewhere by disconnecting the MAF if it failed outright and pressed on.

I thought about the oil filter check, but I just replaced the oil and filter and I didn't want to replace it again unless I have a reason to - maybe I will for peace of mind...

But always the caution is that if while running the engine and the engine starts to get sicker, sound sicker, shut the engine off pronto and avoid starting the engine.

An hour later when I started the car it didn't idle properly - it surged back and forth several times until I gave it some gas, but seemed to run OK after that.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just returned from Austin (to Houston). It's 265 miles. I drove about 85 the last half of the trip (people were still passing me). So I guess that's about 90 minutes at speed. Came home and parked in the driveway.
An hour later when I started the car it didn't idle properly - it surged back and forth several times until I gave it some gas, but seemed to run OK after that. My wife and I went to dinner then to the local parking lot car show and when I started the motor to leave it it was not right - very noisy and rattling. My first thought was IMS bearing so I shut it off.
After sitting there a few moments and weighing my options and the possible consequences I started it back up and it seemed to run fine and in fact did so all the way home - everything seemed normal.
Has anyone else experienced anything similar to what I've described after an extended run at interstate speed?
I mean I cant hear the noise so I am guessing ...
Cats go bad and rattle like heck...and I would start there now that I think about it....then I would run it and see if it repeats....and if it does I would get it checked out - you have heard the IMS rattle on videos no doubt so can tell if its "that bad" STOP!!! -
Actually I haven't. I searched the forum for vids of the noise and you tube but didn't find any. If you have a link I'd love to hear what it sounds like.
I dont have plus.. BUT.. I had simular idle issue after a long trip when my bellow hose on my AOS gave up... Id thats it.. I have a NEW AOS for you car.. The one Ed told me to buy that was a great deal... Wrong AOS for my car... LOL.. $60 Shipped anywhere in the Lower 48.
Thanks for the clip. Mine does rattle a bit but it doesn't seem to be more than usual clatter. If it were a mechanical issue like IMS bearing one would think it wouldn't go away, so my guess is that's not the problem. Has anyone had an intermittent problem with IMS before it ultimately failed?
I do have a thought that might explain. Once before the car made such a noise after it sat for two weeks and I started it up. I had it towed to the dealer and they checked it out but found all in order. Yesterday, when I arrived home I parked half in-half out of the driveway so the car was at an angle nose up. Later when the car made the rattling noise (similar to after sitting) I was parked at an angle facing nose down. Perhaps the oil drained away from the pickup tube and was slow to pressurize after the engine was started. Anyone else have experience with that?
I just took it for a drive after listening to it idle for about ten minutes and it seemed fine...
What Kyle said...
I'll add that with no scary noises, no CEL, the car just finished a long road trip...
AOS would be my WAG as well.
My 02 Boxster exhibited similiar symptoms on a road trip from CA to the midwest, with a slight difference. Along with the odd engine behavior that only appeared once each day (night) at the end of a long day of driving -- when coasting down to a stop on a long freeway exit -- the check engine light would come on.
I suspected the MAF due to the error codes (P1128/P1130 IIRC -- anyhow, something about the DME at its enriching limit) and decided I could limp somewhere by disconnecting the MAF if it failed outright and pressed on.
But the 1st engine start after the car sat overnight in a motel parking lot after reaching my destination had the engine exhaust just billowing oil smoke.
This told me all I needed to know: AOS. I had the car flatbedded to nearest (90 miles away) dealer and had the AOS replaced.
In your car's case, my guess is with the engine warmed up and idling the long term fuel trims will show the DME is adding fuel. The AOS when going bad often represents a big intake air leak at idle, low rpm operation, and less of one at higher engine speeds, at least at first.
So, with the engine at idle, trying to remove the oil tube filler cap might prove difficult which is another sign pointing to the AOS.
With more idling time or slow city driving the CEL might come on and the error code(s) can prove useful.
But always the caution is that if while running the engine and the engine starts to get sicker, sound sicker, shut the engine off pronto and avoid starting the engine. Your diagnosis time is over with. Time to let a professional do the diagnosis.
If you're really paranoid remove the oil filter housing and carefully pour the oil and the element into a *clean* drain pan and see what you see in the oil. If the IMS bearing for instance is sick enough to cause the engine to run poorly then there should be something in the oil.
What you find, or don't find, determines what you do next.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Long trip gets the oil as hot as it's going to get. Even though it's a multigrade and is supposed to get thicker when hot it can bleed by the lifters after being parked a while. This results in a rattling sound when the motor is started. It goes away when the colapsed lifters refill with oil and lash becomes nil. This is more pronunced in vehicles using synthetics than parafin based oils. Nothing to worry about. Happens on some P cars on first start after sitting a few days too.
Thanks for your thoughts. I haven't noticed any smoke but I'll do the oil fill tube test first chance I get. I thought about the oil filter check, but I just replaced the oil and filter and I didn't want to replace it again unless I have a reason to - maybe I will for peace of mind...
You can check the oil filter without draining the sump. Just pull the filter & housing and look at the filter.
You only lose ~3/4qt, and a filter if you cut it open.
