This is not a probability of success.

Suspected cause

Mfletch - If it was the power steering that caused the problem I think the source of the lead would more likely be the pressure hoses that run from the pump to the front.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am assuming the hose in yellow dotted line is for the power steering but while I was cleaning the MAF and throttle body noticed this hose does not connect anywhere on the far end. Is that how it is supposed to be? I apologize for the crappy phone picture

POST 2Original post

Overflow house for the power steering reservoir

POST 3Original post

I believe it is a pressure release or overflow for the power steering reservoir. I would make sure it vents to a safe area...not the exhaust manifold. I'm pretty sure the power steering was the cause of the engine fire on my first 996.

POST 4Original post

On my car the house clips into a holder on the bracket that holds the power terminal and the reservior. It is just a shoert hose and actually vents right there above the AC Compressor. Not right on the exhaust manifold, but if enough fluid came out it might find its way there. Mfletch - If it was the power steering that caused the problem I think the source of the lead would more likely be the pressure hoses that run from the pump to the front. These are routed over the right side of the engine with brackets that attach to the top fo the engine compartment. there are also connections on each hose above the engine between the two plastic brackets. If one of these hoses burst, or a connection came loose then there would be fluid flowing out under pressure and down that side of the engine compartment. It would ge to the exhaust manifold pretty quickly that way.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Dharn found the clip which is next the (+) jumper terminal. Seems like the hose got unclipped when i was taking the MAF airbox out . The end of this hose clips downwards or upwards?

POST 6Original post

Mfletch - was that a "total" holy crap I bet you were crying

POST 7Original post

Mfletch bought the car after the fire and restored it. Pretty gutsy move on his behalf.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks. Got it done this way. The fire on that 996 and damage looks nasty.
