Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. Checked the connections, the engine ground strap, etc., noting appears loose.
Leading evidence: 'Check connections, the engine ground strap, etc., noting appears loose' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'gound strap' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check battery gound' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I took it off, check the cable for breaks with a resistence meter and then cleaned the contacts and reinstalled it.

I may need that starter, as I expect my repaired head back in the next 2 weeks to begin engine reassembly.

By the time I found out I replaced the battery, alternator and removed / bench tested the starter motor.

So I have replaced the battery, the electrics for the ignition switch and now a new starter (actually I bought a used starter and had the same problem, so now I put in a brand new starter).
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.
Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

So I have been having problems with my starter for the last several weeks. Somtimes it will start fine, other times the starter clicks once, then nothing. So I have replaced the battery, the electrics for the ignition switch and now a new starter (actually I bought a used starter and had the same problem, so now I put in a brand new starter). Still the same problem, just clicks once, then nothing. For a while it would repeatedly click, but this was with the used starter, with the new just one click. Checked the connections, the engine ground strap, etc., noting appears loose. Everything else in the car works. If I push start the car it runs, then sometimes the starter will work once or twice, then just a click. Battery shows 12+ amps.
Any ideas?
negative battery cable connection to the body (not sure where that is, but i would look there) sounds like a grounding issue to me
when it "doesnt work" try and wiggle both ends of ever cable you can find -one by one- and see if any allow it to work
By-passed the clutch switch years ago. Tomorrow I am going to check the engine ground, as this was disconnected and reconnected when I dropped the engine. Will check the battery gound, but it is right next ot the battery and i don't think this is the problem. Thanks for your help.
it's to bad the starter terminal is tucked way in there... back in the old days, using a jumper, you can just jump the starter terminal to the + side of the battery and watch the starter pop in/out.
LOL Ferd, I jumped my buddy's boat out in the middle of the lake when his ignition switch went T/U - grabbed a screw driver and .... varoooom.... off she went, he had never seen that dont before, I figured everyone had done that while in high school
OK, it seems it was the gound strap to the engine. I took it off, check the cable for breaks with a resistence meter and then cleaned the contacts and reinstalled it. Starts right up now. If anyone needs a starter let me know, I now have two extras.
you are as bad as me - maybe worse
I figured it was a grounding issue, and good to find a cheap repair (despite the expensive "looking / part replacing)
Men this sounds familiar! Dropped the engine and forgot to tighten the 13mm nut behind the little black door above the A/C compressor (that's the positive lead coming off the alternator) . By the time I found out I replaced the battery, alternator and removed / bench tested the starter motor. Makes you feel stupid once every while don't it?

This used to happen to me with my Mazda pickup in Peru which was always driven on very bumpy dirt roads. It was always the connection to the battery terminals.
I may need that starter, as I expect my repaired head back in the next 2 weeks to begin engine reassembly. Was thinking of replacing starter anyway as this is a heckuva alot easier with engine out of the car. Glad things are working out!
