Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Do you suggest changing pads at a given interval or wait for a warning light or something.

and also dont use the brake sensors (I soldered the ends together)...
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Do you suggest changing pads at a given interval or wait for a warning light or something. No problems, they feel OK, but just wondering how you all handle it. Thanks!
I keep an eye on my brake pads, Im thinking, 1/8 inch thick is as low as I would go... and also dont use the brake sensors (I soldered the ends together)... but thats just me.
Jon,
I had three P cars and I never waited for the worn break pad light to come on.
I guess its just the way I take care of my cars. the way I do the maintenance..I just look at the pads once in a while. Besides I dont like the piston extended that much(when the pads are worn thin), cause it exposes them to corrosion.
Exactly. It is designed so that the light coming on is not a "stop and get flat-bedded to the dealer" emergency. There's still a good number of miles in them. Plus, the anti-squeal pads keep the actual pistons from getting out. Unless you remove the anti-squeal pads. It's a waste of money to change out the pads before the light comes on in a daily driver. I would just wait for the light, then replace at the soonest convenient weekend.
93k on my 996 with original brakes. One year ago at its annual check-up, the dealer said that my rear pads were worn. Since the sensor lights had not illuminated and this car is all highway miles, I thought to wait. Its been a year with another 12k miles and still no dash lights, brakes work great. What do you think, dealer-stealer or overly precautious people?
OK, a little more detail I should have added originally. In Spring (assuming we have one here in MN) I am heading up for a day of DE, and would hate to have the pads wear out in the middle of it. Now I am not going to go nuts on the DE course, but I realize it is an extra load. So I was thinking of changing pads before the DE just to be safe. I have 42K on the car. My miles were easy, but have no idea of the original miles.
Thanks again for the very useful replies.
If you need to replace your pads, the people doing your tech inspection for the DE will tell you. I'd be prepared for a brake job (just get the inspection done early enough to give yourself some time), but don't count on it. Unless you start braking way too early, and lightly, your first DE won't wear your brakes much at all. BTW, good of you to be going out to a DE.
Bring a spare set of pads. If you need them at the track you will have them. There will be any number of folks that will lend you torque wrenches, rubber gloves, pliers, screwdrivers, jacks, jack stands, sledgehammers, chisels, expertise, moral support etc.. to help you change them.
