Suggestion

Too many parts to change out, running wires to the trunk, taping into a power source, possibly requiting a change in the wiring harness.

Leading evidence: 'good choice' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'good choice' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Run wires' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

Suspected cause

At a minimum, you'll need the actuators for the front and rear lids, the button console, perhaps a new door sill, and probably a new remote receiver.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

In what MY were 996s fitted with remote front trunk release function and multiple button keys? I would like to upgrade my '99C4, and am asking if anyone has converted a cable release front hood to a remote version by swapping parts from a later 996 or Boxster. As for the cost of new keys, I need to replace them anyway, since my door lock/unlock is not working. Thought this might be an opportunity to add the remote front trunk release at the same time. ...Rickker

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

what, no comments from anybody? Am I really the first person to think about doing this? I would appreciate some feedback, even if it to say that it can't be done. ...Rickker

POST 3Original post

01+ had the remote front trunk and engine lid. I'm not sure what you would need to retrofit

POST 4Original post

I don't really know, but would guess that a long string would be your best bet for making that project work.

POST 5Original post

^^^ LOL Retrofitting power locks is doable, but I'd imagine that there'd be more to a trunk release, you'd need the remote, ir receiver, actuator... After some googling, found this. Of course it won't be OEM. Remote trunk release

POST 6Original post

Look at PET (or online at Pelican Parts) and get an idea of the parts you'll need. At a minimum, you'll need the actuators for the front and rear lids, the button console, perhaps a new door sill, and probably a new remote receiver. Oh, and add to that a new wiring harness (or adapting the current wiring harness)... I think it would be quite a project. Out of curiosity, how often do people use their trunks? I don't think I use mine even once a month - and I drive daily (to work... don't run many errands).

Often. Groceries, ski boots, lunch pail, 24's If you accomplish this project I'd be very interested in seeing what it takes to do.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 6203464

Thank you, but I already have a long string (cable). What this forum doesn't need is unhelpful comments like yours. I am on here to learn and obtain useful information and was hoping that someone had already carried out this project. ...Rickker

POST 9Original post

I think I'd prefer the cable version for the front trunk as I believe you're still able to open it even with a dead battery to access said dead battery. I vote keep the cable

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 6204595

Jeez, lighten up a little. Have you determined exactly why your current door lock/unlock functions are not working? It could be that you don't need new keys, just a reprogram from the dealership. Your project may be doable but, IMO, not worth the expense. Too many parts to change out, running wires to the trunk, taping into a power source, possibly requiting a change in the wiring harness.

Buck up little soldier...if u can't stand a little joking thrown in with all the free advice u get, then.... BTW, mine is the cheapest and easiest solution, by far.

POST 13Original post

I prefer the cable latches, then it's not a hassle to get into the hood/trunk with a dead battery!

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 6205023

I've already been through the reprogramming routine at a Porsche dealer, for about $130. They swapped parts from 2 keys to get one working. It worked only a few days, and only at very close range. New replacement keys are expensive, in Canada at least, about $230 if I recall correctly. I figured that if I were going to spend that much, it would be nice to be able to open the trunk remotely as well, for the same reasons posted above on this thread. ....Rickker

POST 15Original post

I believe the correct terminology is "frunk". Thank you.

POST 17Original post

I test drove a 996 a week ago and overall the car was in fantastic shape, but they did have issues trying to open the frunk. I actually thought it was kinda funny watching the salesman panic a bit and we did eventually get it open, but am sure my wife wouldn't find it nearly as funny if out and she couldn't open it. Is this a common issue?

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK, I have my answer. It appears that this is not a practical retrofit. Thank you all for your input and comments. I will stick with my OEM cable release. ....Rickker
