The sales rep was busy prepping the 911 for the test drive when he discovered the battery was dead.

Even right after the green lantern test drive the difference between my car now, which is actually fun to drive, (a 296hp 2006 infinity G35 manual sedan), was massive.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A bit of preaching to the quire but hear it goes:
Last Saturday I had a 10:45 am appointment to demo a 2000 C2 996 at a local BMW dealership (See the listed link)
http://www.bmwofnewport.com/inventory/details.php/VIN_WP0AA2996YS620513/ID_bmwofnewport/UI_detail_new2
The 996 is almost an ideal specimen for me although I am a little wary of low mileage garage queens. I wasnt big fan of the color from the internet pictures but actually in person it looks darker, which is nice. Anyway, to give you a picture of the day, it was 20 degrees with partial cloudy skies. The 996 was parked in a sea of modern (i.e. post bagel-butt) BMW looking sexy. The front tires were in great condition but the rears looked 85% worn, and the set was matching Pilot Sports.
The sales rep was busy prepping the 911 for the test drive when he discovered the battery was dead. He jumped it and let it run for about 5 min. I confirmed the ECU wasnt reset due to the dead battery (i.e. it had enough juice to crack the windows when opening the doors.)
The key thing about this demo is my wife was along for the ride. I wanted to get her impression of the livability of the car because I plan on using a 996 as my daily driver.
My wife and I entered the 996 and began adjusting the power seats for optimal comfort. After 5 min. of screwing around we were off.
The street we first turned onto is East Main Road. Its a four lane bumpy 30 mph retail haven. I was very happy with how easy it was to drive the 996 in that environment. My wife was laughing at the backseats. She is very supportive of my automotive obsession.
The street eventually turns into a highway (Rt. 24) which now that the car is properly warmed up I could open it up. I will say I was very careful about applying speed due to the worn-out summer tires in the rear. But the car never felt unsecure. It was alive, full of instant response to my inputs and high fidelity feedback from the road. I was just plan giddy from the experience. After 5000 rpms the car was an animal, a precision road weapon, its amazing You feel like a different set of rules apply to you on the road. The sense of occasion was phenomenal for a 300 hp car. I can only dream of what a GT3 is like.
My wife is all for a 996. She loves the smiles it brings to me, although the seats were not that great. (Were both fairly in-shape with medium builds, so its not width or size)
I have a couple of seat questions:
The car has power seats. Does that mean it (power seats) include power lumbar support also? How much more comfortable are the full leather seat over the standard? or the sport seats?
Were cup-holders an option on all the 996s or only particular model years?
We are looking to purchase a 996 in spring 2009. The purpose of this drive was really to test the waters with my wife. Passed with flying colors! We plan on doing a national search starting in April/May 09.
Thank you for reading my long rant!
Great story, glad you enjoyed the drive.
The lumbar was a separate option than the power seats, my car has power seats and lumbar only on the passenger side (don't ask me, I'm not the original owner!).
The sport seats are different and cradle the occupant more, you would have to try one for yourself.
Best of luck in your search, and get a PPI when you find the right car.
Very nice car for $21500, unless they are including warranty then 25000. Good luck and do your homework. The market is in the buyers favor right now.

Poor chaps trying to sell a green/grey 996 - I've got a friend who tried selling his green 996 for more than a year, if you really want that car you could prob. get it for a great price
Thank you for the cup-holder link and the seat info. I need to try the different types before making a choice.
The dealership was pretty motivated to say the least. I had to make-up a reason not to buy it. I was smiling ear to ear.
I’m hoping the market stays soft (no offence) for next 6 months.
I would much rather buy from a fanatical owner… So get ready to trade-up in the spring!
Maybe a Lowbrid, or Inbrid........
PTHHHH ... yea, I like how he thinks... "I will wait for spring ......"
We all know how that drive feels and you aren't going to stop thinking about it for a minute till you get one. That drive has changed you and now there is nothing you can do.....
you must have one !! It is no longer a want, but a need !
So post some pics when you get it. That green looks nice and I bet the dealer would make you a great deal. I agree on finding one from someone who cared, not just owned one....now is the best time to buy one as most are sitting....NOT selling, that and the new PDK's are out so people who can are ready to move up.
One word of caution. (And a great negotiating tip). Porsches painted green are very hard to move. One of my friends who was in the business many years ago called them "theft proof green." When the day comes for you to sell this car or to trade it in, keep in mind that the next guy will be very hestitant to get stuck with a green car.
LOL - I bought mine before I even sat in it... (well in my mind)
Fell madly in love at first sight, looked it over for an hour or so, drove it....damn!!! Done deal... Took a week to do the paperwork and I was on needles the entire week. I could not wait to see it again and drive it home. The deal almost fell apart at the last minute...but I took it in the end (literally) and have been happy ever since!
a "good deal" is a state of mind ..........
I got a fantastic deal.... for less than it cost to take the family to Europe for 3 weeks, and Hawaii for 2 weeks, (I had to recalculate that one) I have the car I have dreamed of for 28 years, I drive it nearly everyday, and I smile more today than I have in many years. I also get to enjoy it much longer than a vacation....THAT is a good deal!
I will never regret buying this car, even if it becomes worth less than a bike and cost more than the space shuttle to maintain!
(going to take my meds before I get called out...... LOL )
Some have lumbar, some don't -- look for a round button behind the the forward/back and tilt controls on the side of the seat.
It depends if the car has Navigation/PCM or not.
Good luck in your hunt - let me know if I can help
I love this description!! You've described the experience of driving one of these cars perfectly. I feel this every time I drive my car (which is every day, since it's my daily driver. Lucky me, eh?
)
I bought mine in October as a daily driver. I too smile every time I drive it(actually, evertime I go into the garage and see it brings a smile). The word I like to describe the performance of the 996 is "deliberate". Every move you make while driving 30 mph or 100 mph is very deliberate. I am never disappointed when I ask it to accelerate, react or brake.
I know. I had a chance to demo a 997 C4S Cab back in 2006 and I havent been able to get it out of my mind
Even right after the green lantern test drive the difference between my car now, which is actually fun to drive, (a 296hp 2006 infinity G35 manual sedan), was massive. It felt like I was driving the G35 with a 10 pole after the 996.
O boy, Im hooked
+1 in those terms - mine was bought 30 years ago... and plan on keeping it under the same circumstances...
This car was always a dream and I never even sat in one until I started shopping last summer - for all I know, my car is a POS compared to other pcars, but that's okay with me...
The first test drive in the first candidate was a one hit addiction... I passed on it because it was a 2000 and the miles were a little high for my liking - but the guy who said that it sparked an obsession is absolutely right... you can't find the one you're going to buy fast enough and it really took a lot of restraint to be selective.
As far as the green, I like it. There was cab available when I was shopping with savanna interior (black top) and I thought it was a nice combination... out of the ordinary (who was it that called the prominent colors "boring black", "so-so silver" and "grandpa grey?") and distinctive - but the wife nixed that one. Didn't like the interior color (we had a 2000 Miata in nearly the same color combo for her and she didn't seem to mind it...)
Anyway, I got what I got and I'm really missing her (she's been in the body shop for a couple of weeks now getting a facelift)...

EXACTLY the same for me.... told everyone for all those years I would not even sit in one till it was mine, and never did. I also agree mine might be a POS (though I have had it at the track and the instructors said it was not)
I call it my "Training Porsche" and someday I will buy another one anyhow, so if it has a few issues, I will survive
Truthfully, I have not seen any positive economic catalyst that will propel prices on our Pcars up in a few months. This is kinda going to be a protracted long recovery where the bottom have not been seen yet. Save your cash now and I think you will get a better deal in the spring IMHO. I am not going to get into a debate with anyone about the state of our economy. Hopefully, I am wrong.
Ed,
LOL... "Training Porsche"??? What a novel concept... I'm going to have to save that one!
But one I shouldn't try on my wife for a couple of years... I'm sure if I muttered anything remotely soundling like that she'd just keel over... (wouldn't want that to happen, I'm guessing she still has a few great years left in her... [the wife, not the car])

I'm sure mine thinks the same way... she said yes to dodge the expense of a casket...

Exactly...I think their plan is either
1. Have forest lawn install ramps in the hole
or
2. Just drop the car at the junkyard and make a planter out of both of us.
Wow - we're all married to the same woman!
She thinks I'm never getting rid of it. (I refuse to test drive a turbo - I've heard stories). I think I'll be good for a few more years with my '02 C4S, but depending on the economy - who know's what I'll do. (I thought I was getting a great deal in March of 2008, but I won't look back - I've got a 911 in my garage!!!!!)
