Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

And while on the subject of wheels and tires - can I use my C2 OEM rims on the C4S - realizing that the rear tire size is larger on the C4S.

One of the calculators I found recommended 7-8.5" wheels for the 225 tire as opposed to 8.5-10" for the 255 tire.

I'm not sure how the offset compares to your C2 wheels, but here's the recommended size and offset for a 996 C4S for winter wheels:

Leveraging this thread: I have winter tires and wheels for my 04 C2 and I am wondering if i can use these on an 04 C4S.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It appears the major manufacturers have stopped making the 255 40 17 in winter/snow tires. The solution is according to Tirerack to switch to a 225 45 17 tire.
My question is are these tires too skinny for a 17 x 9" wheel? My research shows these tires are normally fitted to a 8.5" wheel.
Any other suggestions? I would prefer not to switch to an 18" winter wheel.
They are 225 mm wide, the exact same width as the previous tire. The difference is that they have a taller side wall (45% as opposed to 40% of the width).
Dennis,
The previous tire is a 2
55
40. The new one is a 225 45. One of the calculators I found recommended 7-8.5" wheels for the 225 tire as opposed to 8.5-10" for the 255 tire. The more I read, the less I think these will fit my current wheels.
Too narrow for a 9 inch wheel. Moreover, too narrow for the rear of your car period. A tire that narrow in the rear will adversely affect your handling and cause your tail to want to hang out like a 1976 930 Turbo.

They have several brands that still make 255s. I remember Falken, Hankook and Toyo for sure. The Falkens and Toyos have decent reviews, but the Hankooks not so much.
Leveraging this thread: I have winter tires and wheels for my 04 C2 and I am wondering if i can use these on an 04 C4S. Fronts are 225/40 18 on 18 x 8.5 and rears are 265/35 18 on 18 x 10.
And while on the subject of wheels and tires - can I use my C2 OEM rims on the C4S - realizing that the rear tire size is larger on the C4S. I just really like the stock rims on the C2 better than the Turbo twists on the C4S. Thanks all
Porsche actually recommends dropping to a 10x18 rear wheel for your winter tires. I'm not sure how the offset compares to your C2 wheels, but here's the recommended size and offset for a 996 C4S for winter wheels:
Front:
225/40 R 18 V M+S tires, 8Jx18 wheels, 50 offset
Rear:
265/35 R 18 V M+S tires, 10Jx18 wheels, 47 offset
The recommended pressures are 36 front and 44 rear.
Thanks Dennis. I will need to learn about the offset, otherwise I am in good shape, Pirelli 240 snow sports are mounted on Einke's so I should be good to go. As expected, costs add up, so it helps to have the winter package in the garage waiting for the car.
Can you tell me the Porsche spec for rear wheel size with summer tires?
The summer tire spec for the 996 C4S equipped with the Turbo Look II wheel (solid spoke, which most of them are - but not all) or the Turbo II wheel (hollow spoke) is as follows:
Rear:
295/30 ZR 18 tires, 11Jx18 wheels, 45 offset
There was also an optional Sport Techno wheel offered on the C4S - I believe it was in 2003. That rear wheel has a larger offset of 63mm and requires 17mm spacers.
