For those with a 996 MANUAL gearbox, it's a lot easier and quicker ( 5 hours total ) if you remove the gearbox to change the AOS.

I read in a few threads that for replacing the AOS it's easier to lower the engine, same for getting the transmission out.
Replace aos this weekend and put a new transmission in

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello,
I plan to replace the AOS this weekend and put a new transmission in. I read in a few threads that for replacing the AOS it's easier to lower the engine, same for getting the transmission out. Can someone explain to me how to lower the engine? Haven't found anything in detail, any help would be great.
Thanks,
Juergen
When the transmission is removed the front of the engine must be supported. Otherwise it would just fall down. Porsche sells a tool that you attach to the car and it supports the engine. It has a 'saddle' that can be screwed up or down a few inches. Many ppl, even mechanics, just support it with a jack stand or something like that.
I think the manual says you can lower the front of the engine 25mm.
I can't imagine that would be much help.
Here is an old link, it is what I used...
There are only (2) nuts holding the engine "up" in the rear... when they come off, the engine is free so make sure you have a good support under it in a way that will not cause issues..

I got mine out tonight, Its not too bad, but then again this was dis-assembly....
Hi Ed,
do you think I will ahve enouth space to replace the AOS once the transmission is out or does it look like I have to lower the engine??
- Juergen
I have my doubts about the need to attack it from the rear. I am almost thinking that if you come at it from the tranny side, it might come out? There isnt much room and I am seriously wondering how anyone would ge the intake off w/o lowering the motor. I am very thin built and it was really tight getting in there.
do you have the car "up"? maybe I can run over this morning and shoot the breeze over a cup of joe with you

PM'd ya my number
I believe removing the gbox is the preferred way. I think it's possible to replace it on the gbox side without removing it. Although you would definitely have more room with it out.
I wouldn't worry about lowering the engine. The amount of space you would gain would be minimal. I would just support it at the front.
