I, too, checked the specs, bought it there, and saved the bucks.
Leading evidence: 'Check specs, bought it there, and saved the bucks' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check autopia' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The PC can be used for application of some waxes and/or sealants but you will find it almost worthless in removal of these products.

I just used a Porter Cable unit I bought from Griots.

Polishing pads are great for cleaning up minor swrils, but use a finishing pad for your final wax.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

All I know are results and it sure worked for me.......
Hello Board...getting tired of buffing and waxing by hand and wish to buy an electric car buffer.....any suggestions???? Any Brands in particular??? Any Cautions??? Have a great weekend and Holiday!!!
porter cable check autopia for packages with the required pads etc. It is a random orbit rather than rotary so a lot safer but much better results than by hand.
Cautions: unless you know how to use one correctly don't start learning on your P/car...IMHO...you'll never get better results than with elbow grease...again, just my opinion.
I have done a decent amount of research on this and am going to get a Porter Cable 7424 Dual Action polisher. If you do a search on
Porter Cable 7424
on the web browser you normally use, you will get a lot of different hits. Check out
autogeek.net
or
Autopia.com
. Both have a lot of "how to" info and supplies. The cheapest price I found on the polisher is $109.99. Hope this helps.
Update:
Went to Lowe's Hardware today to pick up a couple of items. They had a Porter Cable 7336SP for $99.97. For some reason that rang a bell in my memory banks. It is the exact same tool, but it has both the sanding disk backing plate and the base polishing pad. I recalled reading the following on the Coastal Tool site:
http://www.coastaltool.com/cgi-bin/S...a8e+1117367625
Also check out the Porter Cable site below. Both models (7424 & 7336SP) are listed, specs of body on each are identical.
http://www.porter-cable.com/index.asp?e=547&p=2804
Most places want $125 - $130 for the PC 7424. I am going back to Lowe's tomorrow to buy the 7336SP for $100. Savings will pay for some of the polishing pads!
Hope this helps.
I just used a Porter Cable unit I bought from Griots. First time and it looks far superior to any previous attemtps by hand. Clay bar, machine polish for swirl marks then wax. I don't know if it's true but Griots states you "need" their backing plate to stop heat transfer to your paint. I did check and it never got even warm while I used it.

The Porter Cable (PC) is a great tool. Since it is a random orbital machine it is almost idiot proof to use. You can put aside the old school fears of damaging your finish. Due to the RO action the PC does not generate enough heat to "burn" the finish. You will want some good quality pads and polish that works well with a PC.
The PC can be used for application of some waxes and/or sealants but you will find it almost worthless in removal of these products. Good quality microfiber towels work best. Most modern waxes and sealants are very easy to remove and should really only require a good stiff wipe off.
I suggest you start using Zaino, no need for a buffer or high effort polishing. go to
www.zainostore.com
I've been using their products for 6 years now and the results are stunning.
I can "second" the Lowe's PC Sander is the same. I, too, checked the specs, bought it there, and saved the bucks. Bought the Pads at Autopia and just finished waxing the P-car again yesterday.
All works very well. Very easy and fast.
I have to respectively disagree. I too am a Zaino user but there is definitely a place for the PC in the Zaino system. Zaino offers no ability to hide defects in the paint. Z5 is a worthless swirl hider and is really only good at sometimes masking micromarring in the actual Z2 layer ofl protectant.
To achieve the absolute maximum look swirls and light scratches much be removed or at the very least "knocked" down a little (especially on a black, lapis blue, or similar dark color) prior to the application of Zaino. The PC takes much of the elbow grease out of this polishing.
While I agree that the PC is not necessary for the application or removal of Zaino (PC is worthless for the removal of any product IMHO), it still has a place in the Zaino system.
For those of you who bought the 7336SP at Lowes (or elsewhere), did you get the 5" pad counterweight for use with the 6" Foam Polishing Pad? If so, from Lowes? If not, does it work well with the foam pad?
No, I have not gotten the 5" counterweight yet. I played around with the buffer and the 6" weight a little, but I am waiting for my order of polishing pads to arrive. Once I have compared the 5" & 6" weights, I will give an update.
The 6" weight works fine. Be careful with the polishing pad that comes with the 7336. Its a little harsher than the polishing pads from other manufactures and can make some minor swrils on a dark color car. Polishing pads are great for cleaning up minor swrils, but use a finishing pad for your final wax. If your gonna remove swrils start with the least agressive pad and polish (polishing pad, final polish) then step up as needed. You do need to have one light cutting pad, 2polishing pad, 1 finishing pad, a final/light cut polish, and a medium cut polish, and wax to have in you arsenal for a complete detailing system. Search autopia.org for advice on products.
Thanks, Tim. I'll look for that. Please also let us know what pads you use, and how they work. Griot's seems to have quite a variety of pads, and they are expensive.
